A good step towards controlling our speech is to monitor the source of our speech which is our thoughts. It’s important to observe patterns in our thoughts and to correct ourselves when we’re out of line. We’re all guilty from time to time of slipping into victim thought patterns or self righteous thought patterns or vindictive thought patterns. Our thoughts are not offensive, but they are the source of our offensive words and actions. If we quietly, internally keep check on our tendency to give our voices to unhelpful trains of thought, the need for external policing of our behaviour will be a lot less.

The way I have explained our Rights protected FROM government, not granted BY government: We have the freedom protected from government intervention in our lawful speech, (speech that does not encroach upon another's protected liberties) however we do not have liberty to the exemption of the RESPONSIBILITY of that speech. Example; You do not have to ask for permission to shout fire in a crowded theater, yet doing so does not exempt you from the responsibility of having done so. Rights ALWAYS go hand in hand with responsibilities.👍

Well said Dewayne…. Delivered with respect and good humor. There is a lot of bad inconsiderate behaviour out there, people focussing on their rights and freedoms, and not considering the impact of their behaviour on others. With rights also come responsibilities. Has anyone noticed that the tongue is the smallest muscle of the body that causes the most damage… a little kindness, respect and hitting the pause button on the tongue can go a long way to making a better world…. Why make an enemy when you can make a friend? Here are a few of our “family sayings” that still apply today … “Choose with care the words you speak… they may be the ones you have to eat.” “ There is a reason that you have two eyes, two ears and only one mouth… so that you can watch and listen twice as much as you speak. “Least said, least mended.” Thanks again Dewayne for giving us the sensible, cowboy /wrangler take on these matters. You don’t have to agree with Dewayne, (on many things I certainly don’t) but his viewpoint is free and his guidance is free, and it’s given in a calm, neutral manner that gives respect and simply asks for respect back. My feeling is you should just take what feels right to you and apply it to your own life. I think everyone’s personal philosophy on all things ultimately comes down to a mix of introspective thought as well as magpie style pinching of the various ideas and concepts we hear around us. Whatever we feel is right. If we all did that with neutral respect (with some exceptions of course, but speaking in general) for other people’s ideas and views then I think the world would be a much better place.

I’m really glad to hear your take on this, Dewayne. Freedom of speech is in an interesting place right now. It’s deeply concerning how so many people try to police even people’s freedom of thought and belief. I’m a moderate, and I try to respect and listen carefully to others’ opinions with a thoughtful and logical mind, but honestly, many people of certain beliefs/political leanings try to police others’ thoughts and force them to believe what they think is right. Even if what they say in a given instance may be right, it is wrong to try to force your beliefs onto someone else. It’s a fundamental human right to choose our beliefs. But attempted forcing of beliefs onto others has become a thing, all-or-nothing thinking and actions. Back when the race riots were happening a few years ago, I saw so many posts on social media strongly pressing people to cut off relationships with anyone in their life, friends or family, who did not believe a certain way. That’s not only counterproductive by isolating people from hearing other viewpoints and personally isolating, which damages everybody involved, but it’s dangerous and tears the fabric of the country apart. It makes Other into Enemy. That is just plain wrong. If people really believe they are right, then why would they say to wall other people out and completely reject them rather than have a civil and respectful conversation? Respectful conversation, being willing to think about others’ viewpoints and understand where they’re coming from, and recognizing the personhood of the other is, in my humble opinion, the only way we can move forward and heal as a country.

Ask yourself if you're afraid to say something you believe is the right thing to say at the moment, do you really have freedom of speech? Freedom of speech should be used to say "STOP THAT" , "DONT HURT THAT PERSON" , and the best example is; what this Man does on this channel, passes on his wisdom that may/can help others understand life as well as applying it to their lives and bettering themselves. I know I don't know you personally but I recently came across your video about controlling anger. I found it to be very helpful and honest and it's something I've struggled with for years. I've gone to therapy and everything else to try and control my emotions and sometimes I forget that the world isn't such a bad place. All about how an outlook is. One of the things I struggle with is road rage. How to stay calm when a person cuts me off in traffic or whatever the case. I have trouble staying calm and letting things go. I'm doing alot of research on how to control my emotions. Anyways I just wanted to say thank you. You seem like a very nice person and very wise as well. Thank you sir my name is Matt nice to make your acquaintance.

Thank you Dwayne, The level of understanding where most of our young adults are plateauing has got to be an unprecedented low. The average 21 year old, even 200 years ago, would NOT have needed to hear most of the young man advice style content that you post Dwayne. I wasn't there obviously, but I have read so much older literature that makes this so obvious to me. I meant this not in a demeaning way to any of your content, especially because I being 27 yr man have benefited over and over again from your content. My point is that I see our men diminishing with the late generations like my father and grandfather. Integritis men without shame of being strong or rugged, but also empathic to their women and children. Current picture is quite different in America. I thought about the constitution in a generally similar way to your points Dwayne, but you spoke about this in a way that really hit home with me. I never actually knew that the 1st amendment means that congress will not make law forbidding your speech. It's almost like people who are loudest about their right to speech assume that everyone who is breathing on American soil has made vows to suffer any and all behavior. You will surely find out that your rights are laughable as a man. As men our rights do not matter more than our obligations. My wife and children's right to be served by myself are much more important to me than my right to tell the president he's to old for office when I've never met him. This is my opinion, but we should never expect the treatment and rights of the masses to be positively balanced, if as men we are not serving the needs of the young, sick, widowed, poor, oppressed, and old. Longest comment ever sorry. Thank you Dwayne for all your counseling it has surely blessed me. Those who hear let them hear. Fear the Lord and praise His name. For He is worthy. Jesus is His name. Amen.

It is something that we definitely take for granted with freedom of speech in this country when you look at the rest of the world. Few other countries have that trait and yet folks willingly sign it away in some cases here in the United States. Heck, you could even make the argument that the freedom of speech is actively being censored at the moment. In any case, awesome video!

@@thelifewithnate I'm not sure if we Canadians have any legislation in that regard. Our Constitution is incoherent, lengthy, and very technical. Although, I'm in my 70ths... and find free speech to be a non issue. I never felt censorship or anything like that! Although our mainstream media is very much in line with USA. If you want to know the real facts, independent research is required.

He started his video with a clip from one of your videos to set the tone of his video. I busted my gut laughing seeing you on that video; call it one of those ironies of life, see you on someone else’s video and the two of you spilling wisdom for those of us who are willing to listen and hopefully learn from. They do say that those "rights" are based on the idea that all men are created equal. All men have an equal right to speech, and no man has any special authority to shut people up as a legal policy. You can personally tell someone to shut up, or kick them out of your house. Men might agree about what speech is allowable in public, but the law has to apply equally to all people and it has to be according to the authority of all people equally, and not just a man or a body of men who presume an unequal authority to regulate speech. Which is why congress is an elected body of representatives, who make such laws according to rules and debate and votes, etc. And a jury of "we the people" can still decide in the case of a convicted person that the law is being misapplied. It ultimately boils down to the standards of the broader community whether somebody has abused their free speech. But the law, and the right as stated, lays down the rules for the regulation of speech in public. Community standards have always been the informal regulators of speech, but that's not a federal case. That's all the law says - it's not a Federal case - settle it yourself. The concept of "fighting words" was always about personally settling speech issues.

I think the rule is to prevent gross violations, as had been known to occur in history. Like Catholics making Protestant speech illegal. Or saying that only the king or the corporations have a right to speak. Or a race has no right to speak. Or women can't put out a newspaper.
