You two did a fantastic job putting this piece of Corpus Christi history together. As resident, thank you so much. As a sailing buddy of Tony Slowik (who was in the escalator scene), thanks for the good times on the Hobie Cat. May you rest in peace my friend.

That's such a nice comment, thank you! We've got a follow-up Billie Jean video in our new Dinner & Movie podcast series, so please stay tuned for that... editing now (hoping to have it uploaded for Tuesday.)
😄This was probably my favorite movie as an 80s Catholic school kid. The whole girl power/Joan of Arc vibe really spoke to me back then! My mind was blown later when I found out the Putter actress is the voice of Lisa Simpson. Good times and great video!
I been watching this movie every day for like a week on KZread & I just came 🔙 From Corpus Christi South Padre Island 🏝️🏝️🏞️🌴

It’s a cult classic for sure, so good!
I was reared in Corpus Christi. Been many times to all the places where the movie company filmed. As I recall the house at the corner of Ocean Dr. and Doddridge was for sale and vacant at the time and the production company rented it for filming. I remember being told all the furniture and audio visual gear was purchased for the film by the company and then given away, maybe to the production people after they were involved with the movie. I wonder, still, if that was true. We were also pretty impressed that the real local FM station C101 and at least one of the real announcers was actually "used" in the movie although the sound bytes as heard in the movie weren't the way it actually sounded on the air. The Navigation Boulevard Tule Lake Lift Bridge over the ship channel was demolished via a controlled explosion and removed in 2007. The Bob Hall pier was demolished, again, by a hurricane in 2020. I remember at the time thinking the typically Hollywoodized movie was hokey and depicted Corpus Christians as stupid hicks. It has, though, become a good cult classic and is fun to watch.

"The Legend of Billie Jean" is actually on my "watch again" movies list. I remember liking it back in the 80's, but don't really remember too much about it -- other than some young woman running away from home, or something to that effect. Thank you for posting!

Neat video - my family lived in Plano when I was younger, and on one of our road trips to Padre Island and Mexico border towns, we happened to pass through Corpus Christi during the movie shoot. We must have been on the JFK expressway (raised section) as I remember we saw all sorts of lights, cameras, etc so we all looked over, and sort of downwards... had a good view of the whole set. 4 or 5 or so main actors around the station wagon. One of the actors was pumping on the car jack - so it was that "tire changing" scene. They were off in the distance, but I had eagle eyes as a kid, so the memories are still vivid. :P

I'm from Malaysia, but I've watched a lot of American movies. Loved seeing all of these malls in these movies, and really wish I can visit them. It's really sad that almost every mall in America are closed. I did went to some malls in LA, NY, DC & Orlando when I was a kid, going with my family for holidays, during the 80s & 90s. For a kid like me who never seen a lot of American stuff sold in Malaysia, it's like going to a whole new world. Especially toys, games and alternative bands. The last time I went to the US, I've managed to buy some albums by an indie band that I can't find in my country. Really wish I can back in time to the 80s & 90s to visit every mall in your country. PS: Who's your favourite alternative band?
@Our80sLife

Hello and greetings from the USA! Thanks for watching our video and taking the time to share your memories. We agree, it's sad that many of the malls are closing in America. Fortunately, there are still some old-school 80s malls you can visit here, but they are mostly in the smaller cities and particularly in the Midwest, like where we live in Kansas. We actually have 2 malls in our city - one that's in the process of dying (and will probably close soon) and another one that's still thriving. We're glad to know you've had some fun trips to our country and hope you get to visit the US again soon!

x When I graduated grad school (from the University of Missouri), I had three different locations I was considering moving to: Corpus Christi (Texas), New Orleans (Louisiana) and Charleston (South Carolina) - ended up moving to Charleston. x I have not seen the film but am very familiar with Helen Slater, she is one of the actors/actresses that I have done a significant amount of research on. o Received associate degrees on her birthday (December 15th) too, which was officially the end of all my formal schooling for now. o I remember her talking about Billie Jean at an interview at a Comic-con convention, she is the foundation of the popularity of the character Supergirl (it is hard to believe what ways she is associated with that character, I even saw her on the tv series Supergirl the night before last) x That is so cool seeing an interactive storyline like that! o It's like being a detective and a storyteller for the film... o So interesting seeing where they made those sets and how they used extras!

How interesting, thanks Ben! Charleston was a great choice! I have family that lives there (my aunt, two cousins and their families) so I spent many summers and holidays in the Charleston area. Keith's extended family members all live in the Corpus area, so we typically visit there for Thanksgiving. This was a fun filming project to do while there (one we've been wanting to do for years!) And we highly recommend watching The Legend of Billie Jean... definitely an underrated movie from the 80s!

The abandoned putt putt golf location was never actually a putt putt golf spot. It was an empty field and I lived a block away from it. They built the set to look like an abandoned putt put golf course.
@Our80sLife

Very interesting! Thanks for clearing that up. At first we thought those scenes were filmed at the old mini golf course on the other side of the bridge (where we had actually played back in the 90s, and it was pirate themed.) But when we went to that location, we realized it wasn’t right due to the proximity to the bridge.
I like the Legend of Billie Jean! Good film! When I first the movie long time ago, I thought they were gonna play Billie Jean by Michael Jackson lol. I’m also a big fan of the actor Keith Gordon who was in the movie Christine. 😊

Good times, good memories. I remember when they did a cattle call for young women to get their haircut like Billie Jean's. I wanted to, but had just gotten another one of my bad 80's perms. LOL. I remember when Bonnie Stacy of C-101 got the Billie Jean "do." It was epic! Just breaks my heart to see the mall in such a derelict state. Like you said, it was the place to be in the 80's!

Awesome video of an awesome movie. It has my favorite Pat Benatar song, "Invincible". Growing up I always thought Helen and Christian Slater were brother and sister. What is the chance of two Slaters staring in the same movie not being related? We didn't have Wikipedia back then.😂

That song was absolutely perfect for the movie! I think most everyone thought they were related.
Wow, great work! I loved that movie. Just something about how the 80s looked that seems impossible to match, and they never get it right when they try to portray it these days.
I hope you two had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'm glad you both had a chance to make this video, and that was a good movie. Christian Slater actually shot a movie in Cincy a few years ago called 'The Public'. I tried to meet him but didn't get to. But I did ended up meeting Emilio Estevez, who also starred and directed the movie. Also I love Pat Benatar's song from the movie.
