I took a road trip to Wakita 5 years ago, just to see the village up close and personal. I found it fascinating that its real history is very unlike that depicted in the movie: Wakita has never been hit by a twister once in over 100 years. There is something about an ancient Native-American spell cast over the land, shielding it from tornado hits. I saw the museum there but did not go in; it was March, so it wasn't open for the season yet.

"Can I do a complete jigsaw puzzle in the span of one movie?" (It happened to be Twister.) Uh... no. ...I know, watch it again!! ...and again... and again... No idea how many times it took, but by the end, Twister was my go-to puzzle watching movie. 😂 (I was bored as a child.)

The actual tornado that hit the grain silos in the bridge scene occurred on the 14 year anniversary (May 10, 2010) of the release of the movie Twister. It was just one of 42 tornadoes to occur that day. Other tornadoes touched down near Wakita, OK.

“You used to be able to match up the silos and tree line here but an actual tornado came through and took it all out.” As an Okie and Twister lover, I must say, that might be the best description of Oklahoma that I’ve ever heard. A film about chasing tornadoes captures footage of real world locations that will be destroyed by a real tornado within a quarter century of its filming.

I worked Security for several sites in Iowa when filming was here. We provided security over night; I worked 12 hr shifts 7pm to 7am. Two stick out. Pilot Mound, Iowa: Where the hail scene was filmed with Bill in the back of the truck. There was a mile long strip of two lane road blocked off and I drove from end to end each hour or so. The road was "debrised' as if a tornado had come though; very surreal driving that in pitch darkness. Tidbit - one lane of the road had less debris to facilitate travel. Cambridge, Iowa: Where the semi tanker explosion scene was filmed. The fake semi-tractor/tanker (more on that later) was suspended about 25 feet in the air for the drop the next day and pre-wired with 'explosives' - prima-cord only as I recall. I was warned to drive on the opposite side of the road from the setup in case it 'went off', lol. Minor lightening in the area that night - thought for sure I would see a personal show! Didn't happen. The Tractor body was real on a steel cage. The tanker was very thin sheet metal. Tires and wheels were very dense foam and plastic. Next day they blew it - I was at home in bed sleeping...missed it. Next night; I was back as they hadn't cleaned it up yet. I took a mud flap, small section of 'tanker' and a head light assembly as souvenirs. Still have them today.

@@GoingtotheMovies I've heard that they shot the scene twice (and had two tanker trucks built) but at my location there was only one tanker and the associated debris. So, if it was shot twice the first was another location and the second attempt was here since that is where shooting was scheduled? It was also at this location where the scene was shot where the antennae post/structure went through the windshield impaling the guys. Very interesting rig made for that scene. All on a flatbed to be pulled - truck 'airborne' position and a ram holding the steel structure to punch it through the windshield.

Good job. A lot of fun to chase these down. Tough shoot. Here's a bit of trivia. The sequence that leads your video at the location where Bill tries to get the divorce papers signed was shot on two locations, 10 to 11 months apart. The Oklahoma portion was shot fairly early in the shoot. In the spring of 1996, we did a number of reshoots/additional shots. That scene had significant additional shooting, and that was done in the hills above Simi Valley. A pair of similar trees were picked that could double for the Oklahoma location as long as the shots weren't wide. Being spring time, all the area was very green. The extra work includes Bill hopping up on the pickup to explain Dorothy to Jamie. All the actors were there except Phillip. You'll notice that you only see his character's shoulder in Jamie's shots that were done shot then. Also shot on this day was an expanded version of the final scene when Bill and Helen realize that they have survived the F5, and are sitting in the ruins of the pump house. Notice that it is sunny backlit while the previous shots and final aerial shot done in Iowa are in cloudy weather. The original basic principle crew members were there for this: director Jan DeBont, DP Jack Green, etc.. Now you have to go to Iowa and find the locations there. Stay clear of the suck zone. ;-)

My favorite lines: "Honey this is a tissue of lies, there was another Bill, an evil Bill, and I killed him". "Have any of you ever seen an F5?" (Silence from the team) "Just one of us."

Twister was the last movie my Dad and I saw in together on May 12, 1996 (I was 27) and then he passed away 3 days later... I have a move poster signed by Bill and Helen framed... Thank you for this video.. My Dad and I were always in awe of storms... He was funny as during the movie he would keep saying "They should not be alive"... LOL

At 4:55 it's so perfect that there is a red dodge pickup driving past when you show where Bill stood for that scene!!!

Dude, I’m all smiles on this video. Twister is my all time favorite movie. I grew up watching it and I still cant get enough of it. And I only live about 2-3hours away from most of those locations in Oklahoma. Amazing video! I also love the attention to detail, there’s much I would have missed and never even thought to guess looking there. 10/10 video!

Love this movie. I'm from Oklahoma and drove through this area when I was 17 when the movie was being filmed. Saw the shop/diner sets, they seemed newly painted and out of place. It was before the movie was filmed. I was told it was gonna star Tom Cruise, guess he backed out or Bill Paxton got the part. Maybe it was just bad info. Weird to see them so long gone, still a fresh memory in my head.

@@GoingtotheMoviesthanks, heard that too about Tom Hanks. Wanted to clarify, think it was before the movie was filmed and the sets were being prepared, definitely before that scene was filmed. Wrote that kinda conflicting...not the best writer.
