On April 5, 1994, Mann was reported to have abandoned his earlier plan to shoot a biopic of James Dean in favor of directing Heat, producing it with Art Linson. The film was marketed as the first on-screen appearance of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro together in the same scene - both actors had previously starred in The Godfather Part II, but owing to the film's double story structure, they were never seen in the same scene. Pacino and De Niro were Mann's first choices for the roles of Hanna and McCauley, respectively, and they both immediately agreed to act.
Mann assigned Janice Polley, a former collaborator on The Last of the Mohicans, as the film's location manager. Scouting locations lasted from August to December 1994. Mann requested locations that had not appeared on film before, in which Polley was successful - fewer than 10 of the 85 filming locations were previously used. The most challenging shooting location proved to be Los Angeles International Airport, with the film crew almost missing out due to a threat to the airport by the Unabomber. On the DVD commentary, Mann noted it would be impossible to film the airport climax in the same way following the events of 9/11.
To make the long shootout more realistic they hired British ex-Special Air Service sergeant Andy McNab as a technical weapons trainer and adviser. He designed a weapons training curriculum to train the actors for three months using live ammunition before shooting with blanks for the actual take and worked with training them for the bank robbery.
De Niro was the first cast member to receive the film script, showing it to Pacino, who also wanted to be a part of the film. De Niro believed Heat was a "very good story, had a particular feel to it, a reality and authenticity. In 2016, Pacino revealed that he viewed his character as having been under the influence of cocaine throughout the whole film.
In order to prepare the actors for the roles of McCauley's crew, Mann took Kilmer, Sizemore, and De Niro to Folsom State Prison to interview actual career criminals. While researching her role, Judd met several former prostitutes who became housewives.
Initially, Keanu Reeves was offered the role of Chris Shiherlis, which he turned down in favor of playing Hamlet at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. As a result, Val Kilmer was given the role.
Prior to being cast as Ralph, Berkeley played Waingro in L.A. Takedown.
Principal photography for Heat lasted 107 days during the summer of 1995.
All of the shooting was done on location, due to Mann's decision not to use a soundstage.

That scene at the restaurant between De Niro and Pacino was one of the best acting scenes in a movie.
When I was in Santa Monica 2003 as a English tourist, I had a meal or breakfast in that restaurant and someone told me that Heat was filmed in there. Thanks for showing me it again.
Heat is a classic. I always felt it was one of those movies to really capture the gritty side of Los Angeles. Great video, really appreciate the video tour of these awesome locations.
GOD YES, been wanting this one for a while. I got a Burrito too, what a way to end my Saturday
Still the best shootout scene ever caught on film. I'm glad Kurt had to get it on!
Heat is a GOAT Movie... Thanks for the Footwork homie.
You have become one of the best filming location you tubers,I feel the details show the level of devotion here!!!!!A+++!
Crazy to think this movie came out almost 30 years ago. That house on stilts on the side of the hill is crazy. Great video. 👍

I am surprised Kurt didn't say it's located just around the corner from Tom Noonan's characters house at 9:30 where McAuley and Nate go to get info about the bank job.
Shortly after moving to Los Angeles in 1997 I went to Kate Mantilini for dinner because I loved the film. They had a huge picture of the Pacino / De Niro scene hanging on the wall in the dining room. Very nice place. Sad it's gone. Great job with this video.

Oh wow! I saw in the theater back then too. Seeing that in person, I would have not slept for a few days. It would have been too much. Maybe higher, getting to see Pacino in-person, just for me say "because she's got a great ass!". Thanks.
Heat is one of the penultimate LA movies. Like To Live and Die in LA which you also filmed the locations of. Great video and much appreciated

Fantastic video, HEAT is one of the greatest films of all time.
One of my all-time favorite movies! Thanks for all the work that went into this Kurt! Nicely done.
Over 3 decades ago I used to work around Downtown L.A. and when I seen this movie years later, I recognized so many of those locations. I was telling my son that I used to drive down that same area where they had the big shoot out.
90's generation time ..cool 👍🏼 Kurt you put the cherry on top with this movie locations
This is BY FAR the most detailed locations video for Heat I’ve ever seen. Other videos on YT only include a handful of DTLA locations, and always omit the Hilton and LAX locations.
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time, what a classic. Nice job!
Having grown up in LA and being familiar with many of the filming locations makes your videos that much more memorable. Thank you for the great work and attention to detail in your work. 👍

Just curious…for Wanegro’s first scene, did you have any idea it was shot on Pico? For whatever reason, I always thought it was possibly on Lincoln, near the Santa Monica/Venice area. You couldn’t see much from the shots, however.

This film, (together with The Shawshank Redemption) is my #1 of all time. I don't have just ONE #1, I have 2 films that share that top-spot. I love them both equally for different reasons. This filming location video is incredibly detailed! I really appreciated the effort you put in to visiting every scene location, and matching the camera angles for us all. I'm also amazed at how much everything has changed since this was all shot in 1994/1995 Well done!!! Great job on this one! Heat's one of the best.
As an Angelino, it’s cool to learn where an awesome movie such as Heat was filmed, in areas I’ve been to and others where I have not. Thanks again for another cool vid. 🤙🏼

Thank you so so much for this. I can’t imagine there’s a more comprehensive location video for Heat. Funny enough, I completely forgot I had lunch at that Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank on holiday in 2017 until I recognized it in your video haha. Thanks again and looking forward to future videos.

Happy Saturday Now that I’m blessed with a 80’s life video
Thanks for the great video, Kurt. I’ve been hoping you’d do Heat, one of my favorite movies ever, and an LA classic.
What amazes the most out of this video is how the camera is able to transform the appearance of a location. Truly mindblowing! Cinematographers are true artists!
I went on holiday from the UK to LA in 2005. It was late 1am and my wife and I asked the cabbie to take us somewhere that was still open. The place he took us to looked super familiar. Then I saw a large poster from the 16:45 scene, with Pacino and De Niro, on the wall! I went crazy! It was the Kate Mantalini restaurant! I asked the waiter, he was so polite, he showed me the table where they sat, mentioned the backstory and said the staff were given the option to stay as extras or have the day off. I tell you, it made my year! I watched Heat maybe 29 times at the cinema when it came out. Watched it on Netflix again last week! My favorite film. This is a fantasic video, such painstaking work. Well done! 🎉
My dad worked for Aqua Vend and dropped off the blue Aqua Vend water machine you see in the back ground in the shoot out scene. Always loved this movie. Thanks Kurt.
Great work!! Thanks Kurt, awesome video as always.
This so so fun to watch ! thank you for the hard work
I grew up in Downey, I always passed by Johnnys Broiler even when it was destroyed in 2003. We rebuilt it. But this movie was out in theaters the day I was born. And with my two favorite actors, in my hometown. Crazy.
Awesome job dude. Really well researched. I read an article which said the new owners of Trejos house pulled up the carpets and found all the fake blood stains in the wood underneath. Very cool.
incredible that this movie is almost 30 years old. A shame the 4K Disc transfer doesn't do it the greatest justice...Heat is one of the best movies of all time. very cool video we appreciate the work you put into this!
One of my favourite movies. Great job in finding the locations. Must have taken a good bit of time to work out where these shots are today.
Thank you so much for doing this. My all time #1 favourite movie ! You are an absolute legend buddy 😎
Not sure if I mentioned this, but speaking of Al Pacino, I was an extra in the movie Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino back in 1992 as a teenager in the judiciary committee scene at the end of the movie. My friend's father was in the movie business and got us cast as extras in that scene. It took a full week to film that one scene, but we had a blast, got a full week off from high school, and got paid $300 each, and got to meet Pacino and shake his hand. One of the coolest moments of my life. It was a blast. And fun fact, although it looked like that scene was filmed in New England, it was not. It was filmed in an old rented out religious auditorium on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, NYC. It was wild - looking back - that I witnessed Pacino do that scene live that won him his only Academy Award.
Heat filming locations , talk about Awesome! what a masterpiece
Another great video! Heat is one of my all-time favorite crime movies and the shootout scene after the bank heist is arguably the best shoot out scene ever.
Brilliant video of a brilliant film! I've been waiting for this one for ages, thanks Kurt.
I made the pilgrimage to the shootout location while on holiday from the UK back in 2018. Had a coffee at the starbucks in the little square outside the bank. One thing that surprised me was how short the distance is between the bank and cop road block... the movie makes it feel a lot further down the road than in real life.
Brilliant work, Kurt. This is exactly why you’re the best at these. Really smashing job.
Great video Kurt. The funny thing is my girlfriend and I just got done watching this yesterday on Netflix. What are the odds? The family says hi to you and your family. Much love from the east coast. Heat movie fact: Robert De Niro was the first cast member to get the film script. He showed it to Al Pacino, who also wanted to be a part of the film.
This video was awesome! Thank you for taking the time and effort to make it!!
Awesome! Amazing Work! 📼
Such a great film, Mann makes LA a character in the film
Thank you Kurt. Excellent job finding all of these locations. This is one of my all time favorite movie's. I've been waiting for someone to make this video. I was 29 when this movie was released, I remember being on a date here in Daytona where I live. You kept mentioning certain buildings being gone, demolished renovated or whatever. That's funny because the theater we saw it in has since been demolished. Alot happens in 28 years time. Kurt, thanks for all of the hard work, I'm sure that takes alot of research and footwork.
Brilliantly filmed. Thanks for sharing.

I love your videos but they sometimes make me homesick for L.A. in a good way. I have to see Heat again soon too! I am a big fan and I love your videos. The other video about your band was also awesome.
Brilliant. I'm gutted that the Broadway is gone. I've always said if I ever go to LA I would find that restaurant and have a meal. It really stuck with me for some reason, that whole scene. I'd love to have a local eatery like that.....
Pretty good Kurt, twenty-four minutes of pure action and drama that converts into hours of driving and researching the locations. Well Done!!!
funny enough, Al Pacino returns 12 years later to where the "Freedom Town" scene was shot in "Scarface". Ironically as a Detective..lol Great job on these locations sir!👍
One of top ten movies all time. Awesome location review. How can this not go viral?
Possibly the greatest shootout scene in cinematic history!
I love the scene at the restaurant. My family owns it still although Bobs rents from us. Great shots of the restaurant and it really brings back memories of them shooting. We did many movies there throughout the years . The Fat boy was on the roof before. He was given a facelift and now is at ground level. No it’s not for sale ever, we get asked all the time. This is the same restaurant from XXX if anyone recognizes it. Johnnies Broiler, Downey
I remember watching this in a brand new theater with the speakers in the seats so u can feel the rumble/vibration. This was new at the time. This movie, along with Bad Boys which came out the same year, was one of the loudest theater experiences I've ever had 😂
