This video was fun to make because like half of it are just static shots from the manual, which I guess is easy, but you're also limited by not being able to show every page while also needing to vary the selections. A hard balance. Maybe that's the developer's intention? Can you imagine if they had a video essayist easy mode where there are like 100 pages in the manual with fully animated pictures and everything. You could have Tunic as a little poseable v-tuber fursona and everything. Oh, right, we've been calling that little fox Tunic internally, but I guess their real name is Ruin Seeker or something. We ended up just saying "fox boy" in the video because it rolls off the tongue. "Fox boy toy box" is really funny to say, you should write that in the comment section if you see this.
By the way, it's funny how Tunic is a fox, while in A Link to the Past you become a rabbit and in Twilight Princess you become a wolf, which means that Tunic fits somewhere in-between on the scale. Maybe the fox is Link's fursona or something? Although I guess everyone loves foxes. Who doesn't love foxes? That was the secret ingredient to the Dark Souls games all along, have a fox protagonist. Brilliant! Elden Ring got snubbed off being game of the year simply because you can't play as a little sneaky forest critter. Harsh but fair lesson to learned! Every game should just feature a fox uncovering an instruction book like some lost media nut. What are you even doing if your video game doesn't have that going for it? Get it together, Miyazaki! Who needs lore if I can have "press A to jump"?

I love this game, and as you discussed I'm actually quite interested to see how they handle the inevitable physical release of this game. Will they package it with no manual and give the option for fans to buy a manual separate after they've completed it and want the physical relic? Or will it be the first game that comes packaged with a manual and a notice in the case stating "DO NOT READ THIS MANUAL UNTIL YOU HAVE FINISHED THE GAME. NO PEEKING, BUB". Excellent video!

Ha! Done! Got bad ending, and spoiled myself for the good one... I keep thinking about how some of these games are like "Here's a bunch of machine parts, and eventually figure out that your goal is to assemble a rocket that'll take you to the moon." The manual only provides a description of those parts and an acceptable solution is really up to you. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kWikpdFrqLG2f6g.html here's a review of legacy of the wizard / dragon slayer iv on NES and it's also in that same vein. I hear Hydlide is also part of that old school japanese computer game open world tradition. One thing I like more about Tunic is that it's scale isn't all that large, I was basically able to complete it in 18 hours - it's not like BOTW or Elden Ring where you can throw dozens of hours into it and still feel like you're only chipping away at an end goal.

@@Transparencyboo I wish more games embraced the combat. That laser sword is one of the most overpowered starting weapons in all of gaming. And that "one hit and it's a survival horror" is such a genius compression/expansion of the power trip/vulnerability dynamic seen in Gradius and R-type. Especially all the ways it provides to recover from a mistake. You're never screwed - you're always given a choice to farm easy enemies for hearts and rupees, purchase medicine, or risk the trip to a fairy fountain. Or to return to your safe starting screen, and explore a different part of the map. It's why I could never get into Neutopia or Golden Axe Warrior. They lack that extra layer of psychology - it's a surface level reading of their inspiration.

While the original Zelda isn't my most favorite 2D Zelda game ever (that honor goes to Adventure of Link lmao) I still hold it in very high regard for exactly the reasons you laid out here. Mechanically sure it's a bit clumsy, a bit obtuse to get into the groove of, but it absolutely holds up when taken into the context of when it came out and how it was expected to be played back in the 1980s. I played it first on emulator back in the early 2000s, grabbed a physical copy soon after, and have digital versions on my 3DS, and I've beaten every one on both quests. That's not the kind of dedication just ANY game demands I don't think, lol. I think my favorite "secret" about Zelda 1 is how it paces its tempo with your progress. Whenever you defeat a certain amount of enemies in a row without taking damage, depending on what those enemies are, you get certain item drops, most valuable fairies and blue rupees. Of course this is difficult to do early on when your shield can only block rocks and your sword is made of wood... but consider your sword progress is tied to your hearts. Get more hearts (ie explore more and do more dungeons), get better swords. Get better swords, defeat enemies more efficiently, which gets you exponentially more rewards, so you can afford things such as the magic shield, the Blue Ring, more liberally use your arrows for swifter long range attacks, afford bomb upgrades, etc. It's a fucking thing of beauty I never see anyone remark on! Its the most "grow stronger as your adventure progresses" system ever without ever actually neutering the challenge of the game in doing so lol.

I think a lot of people sadly jump into these games without being prepared for them, because like you say the context is quite important and I do believe that you kind of have to give them the time they deserve. @@Transparencyboo Picking a favorite Zelda can often be like picking a favorite child in a way, but to date nothing has matched the sheer physical satisfaction of how tight Zelda 2 feels to play. Some of the best side scrolling platform action ever programmed on any console. And yeah, older games do require a certain mindset to get into and fully appreciate because of their in-game limitations. Like for example, the original Fire Emblem on the Famicom didn't list weapon statistics in game - you had to consult the manual to know which weapon did what lol.

Its funny how this video came out just around the time of a discussion i had with a friend about practically the same thing, just using different examples. I was waxing nostalgic about game manuals, how I first started drawing was by copying the illustrations in the manuals of my favorite games (and now I have an art degree!) and along the way it was brought up that even digital manuals are starting to go the way of the dodo and of course I brought up one of my fav cute little tidbits where for the virtual console version of Star Tropics they included a "wet" looking portion that evoked the fact that for the original you had to dip the manual in water to get the answer to the puzzle and how cool stuff like that was, and how the most modern game I can think of with something similar is the train ticket in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, where I at first just thought it was a cute prop until I got to the puzzle that asked you to fold the ticket to get the answer! But the friend I was talking to did not share my enthusiasm and instead insisted that it was bad design to include necessary details in external elements or to assume that every player would be getting a complete package, citing their personal frustrations with the puzzle in Metal Gear Solid that required you to have kept the box it came in (which did make me feel a little self conscious over the fact that i have cases and manuals for games that I have long since lost the games they once held. 😳) I didn't quite buy that argument, especially since that even if you had lost or were never given the tools needed to solve the puzzle even at the time you probably could have looked it up in a magazine or game guide or even gameFAQs if you had internet access, and for the Layton puzzle you could technically just draw it out and make your own ticket... so we ended up in an "agree to disagree" situation with really the only conceit being "yeah if you didnt bring everything with you on vacation without realizing that would have sucked" knowing full well I was That Weirdo who would have brought everything with me :X all this to say manuals are cool. we need more manual based gimmicks in modern games (shame the evolving manual from the undertale beta didnt end up working and had to be scrapped...) I havent gotten around to tunic yet because im caught in a whirlwind of "games coming out faster than i can afford to have the time to play them" but! Eventually.

But still it seems like outer wilds while relying the most on knowledge for all of its progression does seem outside of the realm of the 3 games listed. Perhaps its the context of knowledge as also being the narrative of in-game history. But great video, really glad to see someone talk about fez nowadays and how unique and different it is in terms of being a 'puzzle-platformer'. Reminds me of another "Brainveinia" I played, a card-based video game called Cultist Simulator. You play as a novice interested in the occult, going to work to make end's meet while pouring through ancient tomes on the weekend, getting tiny scraps of lore each time. At the start, you'll over die to dread or the police or starvation, but once you've done a bunch of attempts and gained knowledge on how the underlying mechanics work, you can weaponize cards that could have killed you before to summon eldritch monsters from beneath the skin of the world and destroy the detectives following you, or your annoying boss. The game's actual end goal/win condition isn't even hinted at until maybe halfway through the game, and hinted in such a way that it's hard to tell that that's the goal at all. Frustrating at first, but I really enjoyed it, and now I get the joy of mastery when I play through it.

I know a developer that made mandatory manuals for the most of their games. It's Zachtronics. Their games have amazing stylized printable manuals. I also know another game that gives an amazing sense of discovery. It's not widely known, but it's one of my favorite games. It's "else Heart.Break()". The game doesn't have a manual, it feels like it doesn't hold your hand at all, it doesn't even have achievements to track your progress (you have no clue how close your are to the end or how many secrets are still left to find). You just keep exploring and it is amazing and rewarding. The knowledge you get transforms subsequent playthrough and changes the game. Highly recommend it

Wonderful video for a wonderful game. I love how you made it as spoiler free as possible. I don't think Tunic would work half as well with a physical manual, indeed. The rate of info you get is an important part, getting it all at once would be somewhat overwhelming, and make some things feel a lot less cool. However, getting the info this way is just so much more fun than getting it in a pop-up box. It's such a good package for it.

Great video! I haven't played tunic yet but definitely will once I get the chance, one thing I noticed as you were talking about it in the video is that once you beat tunic it's almost as if you become the player who had already played through the game and left the notes in the manual which I thought was neat.

Great vid! the witness was the game that first got me thinking about the medium as something more than entertainment, as something that can convey deeper meanings. i'm really fascinated by the demarcation of video games, and how brainveinias especially draw attention to how complex it is to succinctly identify 'the game itself'. because isn't the knowledge we get from playing actually a power-up? the new game + carries not only the in-game upgrades, but also our experiences. and here our experiences before we even start the game for the first time comes into play. anyway, thank you for yet another video which inspires interesting discussion. makes me want to write about games again hehe. can't wait for the next one!!

An amazing video! Man I should play Tunic and also The Legend of Zelda. The importance of the manual as paratext feels like a certain blind spot in videogame preservation. Or, at the very least, it's very easy to [Chapter 4 of "The DEATH of Video Games | Capturing the Frozen Flame"] a copy of an NES game, but it's not like that will come packaged with the manual for easy reading, if it's even translated. Plus, emulators don't come built in with ebook readers, so reading a scan of a manual will always be a little bit more of a hassle in comparison to a physical booklet. (Because I have a terminal case of JRPG brain) I am also reminded of Final Fantasy XI, which I'm playing through at the moment. It doesn't have a manual per se, but trying to play the main game without a guide is, as far as I can tell, impossible. Basically every other mission has a step that's like 'go to this unmarked location of the map and interact with the right ??? on the ground; there will be like 50 of them so be sure you select the right one.' The fact the game absolutely refuses to convey navigation via the game itself is iirc an intentional design choice to push players onto forums and online communities (and now to bg-wiki) so that the game develops an online community. There's a certain logic to it specific to the game being an MMO, regardless of whether you agree with it. That then opens up the question 'is it alright if a game basically requires a FAQ to play through in general,' which we see playing out right now with Elden Ring, though it is a debate that is (to me) somewhat besides the point because I'm a filthy cheater that looks up a FAQ the second I think I'm stuck. The idea of a FAQ being a form of community-built paratext though is a really interesting one that opens up some more questions worth pondering.

I grew up with the original Zelda. Had a hand-drawn map and all. While it's a bit on the random side to find many things (burn every bush, bomb every wall), the exploration is still very nice. The second quest also throws in a wrench with passable walls and stuff. But the lack of hand-holding and the ability to explore where you want is by far the best feature of the game. And the music is great. A Link to the Past is my favourite, though. Slightly more linear due to necessary items to progress, but that also makes it more of a Metroidvania in my eyes, and it's still not particularly linear after the first few dungeons. And there are a lot of dungeons.

TUNIC is getting a physical release this year that'll ship out on July 28th, which'll include a physical copy of both its it's full-color manual and a general controls and concepts booklet. Meaning that, yes: TUNIC has come full circle with itself and will have a physical manual with a foldout map of some areas and dungeons. Oh, and the full-color manual will also be staple-bound too. Plus there's also gonna be a hardcover edition of the full manual packaged in a sturdy slipcase.

One of the really nice things about playing retro games these days is that it's usually pretty easy to find scans of any game manual online. I look for a .pdf pretty much whenever I'm about to play a game from The Age of Manuals, partially because I'm afraid I'll miss some important hint or mechanic, but also because there's something inherently fun about reading them. The flavor text especially sometimes does an excellent job of setting the mood. The intro Yoshiaki Koizumi wrote for A Link to the Past's manual really gives the impression that Hyrule is a place with a fair bit of history, making me all the more excited to explore it in-game. The English-language manual for Castlevania III is hilarious, with the way it implies all your partners are ghosts, all the incredible names it gives things, etc.. They even invent a character from whole cloth, the Poltergeist King, which is such an evocative name. Those two words alone stir the imagination. I love Poltergeist King. I'm afraid I'd probably have entirely overlooked Tunic if not for this video, so thank you! I'm looking forward embarking on its journey one of these days.

Ever since I got my first Working Designs game way back when (Alundra), I've always loved video game manuals. Working Design's and other similar manuals had gorgeous art and were fun to read and look at. You could learn about the game's characters, it's world and, with a game like Trails in the Sky, it's entire layout and politics among other mundane things like controls. Even the black and white ones could be interesting if not quite up to the hardcover, small artbook level of Working Designs. The first thing I'd do before playing was always look through them to see what was in store for me. Then one day they started getting smaller, less artistic. They blandly told you about the controls and systems with no real artistic flare. Then they turned into a piece of paper with more legal jargon than the bit about the controls. Then came the "see our website for details" and eventually... nothing. I understand why they went away. You don't really _need_ a manual if there's in-game guides and the internet exists. You can still see them in more limited editions (Rune Factory 5 had a nice one written like it was an in-universe job manual, complete with memos and crossed out text or sections changed by the game's characters and is full-color to boot) but they're almost entirely gone now. Less trees being cut is always good but the manuals will always have a special place in my heart.

It knows what bits are the stuff we loved, what bits to fudge in favour of stuff game designers have learned in the decades since, not lean so hard into nostalgia that it won't work if you don't have it, etc. It won't be for everyone, nothing is, but /damn/ did they ever manage to do the thing they were trying to do insanely well.

It's a good thing that this game is just as enjoyable with invincible turned on. And for out of time to get through everything, I just used a guide to get the true end. That's said, I would really hope to see more game that focus on open world puzzle solving through understanding of mechanics rather than finding switches everywhere, without asking the player to do combat. And games really need to implement digital note taking features more often. Having to use external tools like pen and paper to piece together informations is kinda counterintuitive at times, and, maybe this is a weird one, it can make these games hard to be put into VR.

All I'm wondering after this video is how you got the yellow tuft of hair on the fox. I know you can customize the colors but I don't remember the hair tuft being a separate color from the fur.

In the end, the Switch physical release of Tunic *did* include a physical manual, plus a second copy of the maps... But the manual starts with a spoiler warning, urging you to play the game first.

Which is the right call. It would be a bit anti-thetical to the entire idea of the game to look through that entire thing first, haha.
