A shot of whisky before and after every project is a great use of alcohol in the shop

OLD Leather Smith here, great job Chuck. I have found HAND SANITIZER works just as well. Even on hands that have dye on them. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

Great stuff, Chuck. My first career was in electronics and we routinely used 70% (rubbing) Isopropanol for cleaning up after soldering. I keep it and 99.9% (lab grade) in my shop for various purposes. I have simply never used denatured alcohol. I love learning new things! I'm 68 and I firmly believe that if you stop learning, you stop living. The Leather Element series is a wonderful resource and I've recommended it to people many times.

I use 91% ISO to thin leather glue, it allows it to seep into fabrics deep enough for a good bond.

Excellent information! I've been using isopropyl alcohol for a few things when it comes to leatherworking, but it's great finding out how useful the denatured alcohol can be.

As someone who is brand new to leathercraft, id love to see a quick video on stitching chisel types and sizes. What shape/sizes/spacing is best and commenly used for. 2mm, 2.7mm, 3mm, 3.38mm, 3.85mm, 4mm, 5mm etc its confusing as a beginner to know what tools to get/invest in

i know the feeling and i spent much time, money and brain cells over the years to figure out what's what. keep it simple. 5 or 6 mm for big projects like bags, belts etc. 4 mm for everything else. you can dilute it and justify all the different sizes but that's a simple tried and tested rule to get on with. ✌

I keep Windex window cleaner in my shop to keep the tables clean. A little spray on my fingers takes quite a bit of the dye off. I keep alcohol too!

You bet ya. It’s definitely confusing how many types there are, and the variety of responses from them, some are worse for cracking the surface if it’s already finished, and others soften the leather too, so planning is important!

Damn he is talking about isopropyl alcohol. 😢 I was hoping for recommendations on which whiskey to drink while tooling😂

Seeing how I've never been a drinker, isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol would be the only alcohol in my shop or home.

I already keep cheap vodka in a spray bottle for sanitizing around the house. Would that work as well as the denatured alcohol? I don't want to have to buy that if regular vodka will do.

Vodka is WAY more expensive than a bottle of denatured alcohol. Here in Germany a liter/quart of "Brennspiritus" is like.. 2€/$. The problem here is the alcohol by volume. Normally drinking spirits contain something in the ballpark of 35-40% alcohol, the rest is water. Denatured alcohol is 98%, which is as pure as you can get it. Therefore it is a better solvent. Oh, and one thing about sanitising and desinfection: To desinfect surfaces you need a solution with at least 70% alcohol.

I'll be honest. It's easier and cheaper to get isopropyl alcohol than denatured or methylated spirits in the UK.
