The Law of Chastity | Covenants in the LDS Temple Endowment

The Law of Chastity is a covenant which Latter-day Saints make in the temple endowment. This law “means having sexual relations only with those to whom they are legally and lawfully wedded according to God’s law.” The Lord's Law of Chastity is not just a list of don’t’s; there are some very important and divine do’s in there as well. But we are going to spend most of this video diving into WHY the Lord requires chastity of us. So today we’ll explore the practical and theological reasons for the Law of Chastity.
The sexual functions of our bodies are sacred and divine, when they are used within the bounds that the Lord has set. We covenant to live the Law of Chastity because we believe that it will bring us a fulness of joy and happiness in this life. We show our love for God when we obey this law, and we show our respect for our fellow man when we respect their bodies. Participating in sexual intimacy is participating in the godly powers of creation when they are used in a sealed relationship. As we channel our God-given desires and abilities towards marriage and family, God will bless our efforts and we will participate in His work and His glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

Very well said. Clear, direct and adult. People from every denomination need to hear this. This is not only stated in the temple but is very clear in the Bible. All disciples of Christ are given this standard and it is amazing how many want to parse and disect these principles and standards. Coming from a catholic, Lutheran, and methodist background before joining the church this is spot on and not surprising in any way. Great lesson and great explanation.

I've learned that Elvis has good advice to more strictly follow the law of chastity by not rushing into most anything. We can be mindful of our thoughts and where they'll ultimately take us if we continue to follow them. This Temple channel is almost like going to the Temple. It's sacred and wonderful.

It absolutely kills me (figuratively) when people think that teaching abstinence is "harmful." How in the world would saving yourself for marriage actually hurt someone?

Saving yourself is not really is not really about remaining pure. It is all about learning self denial. It is like fasting, If one can deny himself of basic desires like food and sex, for extended periods of time, he can deny himself of all temptations.

Elder Holland refers to Boyd K Packers talk Why Stay Morally Clean in April 1972. He calls chastity “the very key” to Gods plan. Robert L Backman also said “My beloved Aaronic Priesthood brethren, with all you are learning as you progress toward virile manhood, I pray that you will get understanding of the vital truth that chastity is the ultimate and perfect standard underlying all spiritual progression.” October 1989

  • @josephaney

I agree with what you are saying, but let me take you to a higher level. To begin, let's look at the three natures of man. As humans, we have three natures, animal, human and divine. Let's look at those one at a time. Animal nature is instinct, and yes, as humans we do have instinct. Instinct is, primarily, about survival and the perpetuation of the species, but also involves social dominance and territory. Understanding how human instinct works in human society, we can get clues from observing our nearest animal counterparts, the apes. In an ape society, there is a dominant male that establishes his territory. He eats first and gets first pick of the females and life is all about eating and procreating. It is a fact of life that the majority of people in the world exist at this level. Even in a civilized society there are companies and gangs of people whose social structure is very animalistic, and there is nothing wrong with that, but people who live their lives at this level and never rise above it, will end up in the telestial kingdom. Human nature is our ability to reason. We have the ability to override instinct to do worse or better than the animals. Sexually speaking, in doing worse, there are sins we can commit that animals do not commit. The first is abortion. Next is pedophilia, then homosexuality and then bestiality. Animals do not abort their babies. Animals do not molest their young and except in rare instances, they do not engage in homosexual acts. Animals to do not mate with other species. People have asked me about homosexuality. What is wrong really wrong with it? The first thing that is wrong with all sexual sins is Lust. Jesus only specifically mentioned lusting women as being sin but it is just as much a sin to lust after children or persons of the same sex or of animals as it is to lust after women. Sexual lust is a serious sin and we all have the potential to lust. It took me, at least 15 years after I was born again, of constant praying and self denial for me to overcome the temptation to lust. The second thing that is wrong with homosexuality is how it gets started. 99% of homosexuality is the result of pedophilia. There are two things that happen when a child is abused sexually.. The first is that the brain rewrites itself to compensate for this new programing. The second thing is that the child becomes subject to demon possession. Homosexuality and especially transgenderism are evidences of demon possession. Transgenderism happens when a person is possessed of a spirt opposite to his or her natural gender. True men of God know this and healing these two diseases means to cast the demons out of the person. People have asked me how a Christian should react to a child who comes out as gay. I would suggest they find out who molested the child and take legal action against him and take the child to one having authority to cast out demons. There are also sins against humanity that we have to consider, rape, prostitution and sexual irresponsibility. It is always wrong to force another person to have sex. It is wrong to sell sex and it is wrong to not take responsibility for one's sexual behavior. One of the greatest sins in our society today is promiscuity being promoted by the godless people in the government, dragging people down to the animal level of human existence. Doing better than the animals sexually involves social rules, customs, traditions and even religious rules. Many of those rules involve some kind of marriage, were a couple agrees to be exclusive in having sex to form a family. Things get complicated when religion gets involved. Every religion has it's own set of sexual rules that may or may be from God. Take for example, Catholic rules. The Catholic rules for sex are, 1. Sex is evil. 2. Marriage is God's permission to have sex. 3. in marriage, monogamy is the rule. 4. Celibacy is a higher state than marriage. None of these rules are from God. Sex is not evil. It is good and it does have a godly purpose. God gave us permission to have sex when he gave us the commandment to be fruitful and to multiply. Marriage in the kingdom of God serves a higher purpose than just having sex. There is a time for abstinence, but it was never intended to be a life style. It is good for a man to have a woman and it better when they start having children. Just as an aside, the reason for Catholic rules was not to promote godliness. They are for making money. Priests of the Catholic church make tons of money exploiting human sexual behavior at the confession booths. Have you ever wondered why they have those confession booths? They are for the purpose to hide the priests masturbating while listening to the sordid details of people's sexual confessions. Really. Those who persisted in following terrestrial rules and never rise above that level will end up in the terrestrial kingdom. In the Kingdom of God, the rules are simple. It all depends on what you want forever. Let's say a man only wants to be in the Celestial kingdom but does not want the hassle of having a wife and children. He can do that. The only rule is abstinence until sanctification. If a man just wants one woman forever, there is a place in the celestial kingdom for couples like that. The rules to obtain that place in the celestial kingdom are abstinence until marriage and in marriage, monogamy. Do not steal other men's wives and do not divorce and do not marry widowed, divorced or unclean women. Now, let's say that a man wants to be active in eternal procreation, there is a place in kingdom of heaven for that. The same rules apply for those who want monogamy forever but there is an addition. Abstinence until marriage. In marriage monogamy until sanctification and in sanctification entering into the covenants of exaltation that are administered by Jesus himself. I mentioned earlier that marriage in the kingdom of God serves a higher purpose than just having sex. Women have a problem. A man can be sanctified without having a woman, but a woman cannot be sanctified without a man. I can go into a lengthy explanation why that is so, if you are interested, but for now, I can tell you this, there are no single women in the Celestial kingdom. The main purpose of celestial marriage is for the sanctification of women. The second purpose it to establish a Family of God forever.

I mean no disrespect, but what steps are the younger generations taking to work for the inclusion of LGBTQI members to have their marriages accepted? I think this is VERY important to retain members that don't feel shame and to possibly acquire new members. Isn't God all loving and all accepting?

The church does not accept LBGTQ marriages. Still the church ask its members to love people regardless of their choices. The church offers tolerance for people who are different and requests the same tolerance of others regarding the standards it sets for its members.

People feeling connected to LGBTQIA+ community, ought to disconnect from that community. Reminds me of Matthew 6:24 "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon"/worldliness. God will not rescind His laws and commandments. Disciples discipline themselves to God's ways; God does not bend His truths to include our temptations or mind us having negative feelings (like shame) that ought to bring us to repentance. I think that's why the laws of obedience and sacrifice come first. Those who experience LGBTQIA+ thoughts and feelings and want to also be Christians (believers and followers of Christ) will have to be stronger in putting away their natural/worldly/carnal temptations to do what is right in the law of chastity. Obeying God's commandments requires sacrifices from every follower. We daily sacrifice pridefulness and frivolity to take the yoke of Christ, which is loving and doing good for God and one another. We sacrifice financially to pay tithing.

I guess my first reply answered only your first question. The second question is "isn't God all loving and all accepting?" Yes, but what does that entail? God loves and accepts me for who I am, but He still knows I have potential to become perfect and encourages me to strive to improve in living up to all His laws and commandments.

Yes God is loving but no He doesn't accept all behaviors! The prophet Joseph Smith used the phrase, proving contraries, which means essentially finding the perfect middle ground between two competing virtues that are necessary to keep each in its proper place. In this case, I will use the 2 competing virtues of love and l;aw. With out the opposite virtue each would become a vice and thus harm us. For example, love with out law would remove all moral standards

God does not have unconditional love for us, He has Devine love for us. While Devine love can be called perfect, infinite, enduring, and universal, it cannot correctly be characterized as unconditional. Pres. Nelson - Devine Love, Feb 2003 Ensign

Why hustle at a gallop through a subject of piety this kind, if it supposed to be so sacred as proposed? I would appreciate a more calm lecture style, English is not my mother language. What I conclude from here is, that there is no sexual integrity outside marriage, and this is kind of horrible and extremely threatening or frightening to me. What is there to say about a single celibate person, who lives in complete abstinence, along with certain rules or bonds for example to superiors. Does a person like this have sexual integrity then or not, or is that person even not allowed to experience sexual feelings and own imaginations ?

This is only one positive side of the matter. Does this life style have a negative side? Not saying that you have to cheat on your spouse. Prior to marriage each person must engage in some sort of an activity to be able to have experience and find a right partner. If there is no experience then this area of life is not explored, therefore you can’t know what you like and what you don’t like. I believe there should be sexual life before marriage. Person should experience and have mutual fun based on which he will make right choices without feeling of guilt. Just use condoms and be careful.

The LDS church needs to loosen its interpretation on the law of chastity if wants to have more converts. Why would two people who genuinely love each other and care for each other be judged so negatively and condemned for a protected and respectful intimate relationship before marriage? It’s a little over the top

1 Corinthians 6: 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. Therefore since God paid for body with a price he gets to decide the bounds on what and what is not violating it.
