The Last Word - Disney World in Hurricane Irma

Фильм және анимация

Today I'm taking a look back to a popular video of mine from 2017. One which I spent in Florida all by chance within Walt Disney World when the infamous Hurricane Irma had struck. This is my detractors commentary of that video!

That widespread panic happens every time we get a storm in Florida. Every time. Yes Irma was a very bad storm. But the amount of panic that comes with some hurricanes. Ugh. True Floridians prepare for this BEFORE the season starts. Like you should to prevent the panic. Love the update Jake.

Can confirm. Widespread panic buying. We can see this now, across the country, with the CoronaVirus where - for some reason - people are surprised that toilet paper got all bought up. Those are the same people who criticize Floridians for not getting out of the state early enough during approaching canes. You either leave/buy unbelievably early, or you don't and you go into the disaster with what you have.

A few things to say. Irma didn't send all Floridians into a panic, then again I've been through 4 major hurricanes. Irma didn't even cut my power in Orlando. Secondly it's important to note that the power of the winds you felt on the walkway was made worse by the fact that the walkway is 5 stories above the ground. The higher you go the stronger hurricane winds you feel. Not saying Irma wasn't powerful at ground level, just saying that as far as Florida is concerned Irma wasn't a major storm like Charlie in 04 or Michael in 18. THOSE where truly terrifying storms.

It's a good idea to book a room in a Disney hotel during a hurricane! They are on some of the most solid ground in Orlando and they are all built to a VERY high structural standard! I have heard a lot of people put up elderly in rooms there if they are worried during a storm because they have food and water that (usually) lasts.... Glad you're safe!

The real dangers of a hurricane are: loss of utilities, airborne debris and the storm surge in coastal areas. I’ve been in a category 5 (Katrina) and the actual storm isn’t a big deal. It’s what the storm picks up and the lack of power and water that kills people.

  • @Raptor-kc9vh

Irma only sustained in the 40’s in that region, might have gusted 70’s. You will know 90 -100 plus. That roar when you reach Triple digits is Creepy as “F” you will definitely know and hear when it’s coming. Thankfully lots of areas have improved underground utilities. But Disney resorts are the best places to stay during a hurricane, they are actually built very well. A lot of people in florida still have “I believe it was 2004” when the state got nailed by 3 hurricanes on the minds. People were without power for a month even in the Orlando area.! That was a crazy time.

I was there during Hurricane Irma. Was staying at the Best Western at Disney Springs. Ended up extending my stay for 3 days. Luckily, no power loss and I downloaded lots of movies to watch the day before Irma hit. We did loose internet some time over the night and didn't return until the evening the following day. Also, was able to stock up with food from the restaurant there that I kept in my fridge, and was lucky enough to be able to order water from Amazon and delivered to the front desk days before the hurricane hit. You can see some of the hurricane footage from my room on my WDW 2017 video. I think the only thing was the extra day it took for places to reopen after the hurricane.

I have lived in Fort Myers since I was born (97) and have gone through roughly 7 or 8 hurricanes. Irma will always be the most memorable for me because it was my first time going through the eye of the storm. Let me tell you, that is the eeriest feeling ever. For about an hour inside the eye wall, all hell was literally breaking loose outside (was a cat 4 at the time). My wood framed house was swaying in the wind, it literally felt like I was on a boat. Then, out of the blue, over a course of maybe 5 minutes, we were in the eye. It was calm with a light sprinkle and very low winds. It ended up staying like that because there was no southern side of the storm thank God. Definitely the weirdest thing I have ever experienced in my life.

I was sheltering in place with my family during Irma in Fort Myers, Florida, about 3-4 hours from Orlando, and further south, along the coast. We lost power for about 2 weeks (rural area), and had to stay at my grandparents' home, which, amazingly enough, never lost power during the storm.

Jake, we've had quite the experience that same year with Hurricane Maria, which came exactly 2 weeks later to Puerto Rico (Hurricane Irma was a Cat 5 storm when it almost hit the Island as it veered NW just in time) and it sliced the Island from SE (Yabucoa) to almost NW (just east of Arecibo). Since the wind meters were broken at 100mph / 160kph (!) I estimate my house (Bayamon in Metro San Juan in the Inner N) got 120mph / 190kph sustained winds with 150mph / 240kph gusts (at Yabucoa it was 160mph / 255kph and 190mph / 300kph respectively). To shorten the tale, I didn't had power since Irma (10/6/2017, didn't got it restored for Maria) through 2/15/2018 and Internet on 3/1/2018. Can you imagine Christmas with just the sounds of the generators in the neighborhood? (Holiday music only though battery-powered radios tuned to most stations that were already up from the hurricane). At least we didn't get the massive destruction our compatriots in the SE and the mountain range got.... Maybe someone will put what people in the Bahamas suffered through Dorian in 2019 (Cat 5+ stuck for 2 days in place), which is EVEN WORSE.

Irma sent both coasts of Florida into a panic as it initially was headed for the east coast, so they began evacuating, but it then took a turn for the west coast and they scrambled to get gas and hotels to evacuate. The eye went right over our neighborhood in Naples. We are still waiting for roof to be replaced (lower priority damage). Very interesting video footage.

I was there also for Irma we were staying at Disney's Pop Century. We never lost power so we just stayed in the room and watched tv and played games for 2 days. We had the dining plan so the day before we stocked up on snacks, soda, pizza and sandwiches. A lot of people were at our hotel from Southern Florida who came up and inland to escape the hurricane. There was a few trees down at the resort but it fared pretty well.

I remember being at pop century during Irma. It didn’t seem to be that bad, but our room was on the lee side, so we didn’t get as much of the wind. We never lost power, but the WiFi was particularly slow because everyone was on it. I saw the devastation the next day, however. It was my first WDW trip, and we were a little spoiled by the lighter crowds. Compared to this last January when the lines were so long.

12:46 That's insanely surprising... I live in Cape Coral, FL, which is a lot closer to where Irma first made landfall, and we had power back the next morning and internet back within 24 hours of the storm passing.

During hurricane Irma I lived in Tampa, FL. I worked in a office complex right off interstate 75. Management had us start working from home two days before the storm hit due to the fact that everyone from Key West and Naples were evacuating and heading north on that interstate. It was literally miles of cars heading north less than a day later. Most buildings can't withstand a Cat 5 hurricane.

You were there with my boss. She refused to cancel her vacation and drove into Orlando the day before the storm hit. Ended up angrily stuck inside her hotel room with her kids because the park was closed. I thought it was pretty selfish of her to expect the park workers to be out in a cat5 hurricane operating rides for her and her family.

I agree I live in Miami, been here all my life and everyone just starts to panic and freak out when as a Floridian you should be prepared before it hits we get hurricanes all the time Im used to it lol but Miami got lucky the eye was supposed to hit us but went left, it decreased in strength too so the only damage to my house was a tree fell on my fence. The worst is probably after the storm, I was one of those people 2 weeks with no power and in Florida heat it is hell.
