Now this is what a real movie is like. Excellent acting, excellent plot, English accent, goth...and no ridiculous loud music drowning out the dialog. It seems real instead of a movie. Takes real talent to pull that off. The English really know how glue a person to his seat. I really enjoyed it.

I thought that I had seen all of the Sherlock Holmes episodes; fortunately, I was wrong. Watching the inimitable, extraordinarily gifted Jeremy Brett in other films and taped stage performances is always a sublime pleasure. Had he lived, who knows what other great performances his fans would have been more-than-fortunate to see. What a talent! What an artist! What a uniquely handsome man! His charismatic persona jumps off the screen and the stage!

I've read all the Sherlock Holmes in a Conan Doyle compendium - the stories are pretty consistent with other detective stories of the time. But when you put Basil Rathbone and, yes, Jeremy Brett into the mix you have something powerful and interesting. I think Jeremy's druggy facial idiosyncracies, though grotesquely entertaining actually detract from the reasoning side of the character. But still well worth watching.

Jeremy Brett was my favorite Sherlock Holmes (and still is to this day). I also enjoy Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Holmes, but Brett's portrayal of Holmes is so magnificently eccentric. He truly owned the part. I love (and own) all of the Grenada TV Sherlock Holmes episodes starring Jeremy Brett, and I cherish them dearly.

A few years before *JB's* version debuted on ITV, the BBC had a lower budget series starring Peter Cushing as Sherlock. Brett is also my number one, but I wish there was a touch of the humour as displayed in the aforementioned Cushing portrayal. Cushing's old nemesis Dracula (Christopher Lee) also did two TV movies as an older Holmes I quite enjoyed.

I struggle with the Memoirs series, Jeremy was so ill at this point it's hard to watch him struggle with his breathing and slurring words. I applaud his devotion to the character and craft but I chose to remember him as he was in the earlier seasons, full of life and zeal. I far as I am concerned he is and always will be the only Sherlock Holmes and when I read and reread the books, it's his face I see and his voice I hear.

For those who didn't fully understand the plot of the story: Stockton returned to the village to investigate his past, fully believing the story that his ancestors were vampires (as shown at the beginning of the movie when they burned down the Stockton mansion). Stockton meets the Ferguson family and falls in love with the wife (Carlotta) and the maid (Dolores) as later revealed in his diary, leading him to use his charms and knowledge to woo them. In the village, there was an influenza outbreak that claimed the lives of the blacksmith and the Ferguson family's baby. The superstitions of the village led everyone to conclude that Stockton was indeed a vampire to explain what was happening. Jack, the son, finds a father figure in Stockton (they shared a love for the violin, and both were loners), which made him believe in the philosophy that Stockton was truly a vampire. Here, Sherlock appears, curious to know why Stockton was being linked to all the events that were happening. After a while, Stockton and Sherlock meets, where Stockton tries to deceive him to convince him that he is indeed a vampire. This is where we realize that Stockton truly believed he was one. Later, Sherlock then returns to the Stockton mansion to uncover the deception. Stockton becomes overly confident in the trust Ferguson had placed in him, leading to the "fight" we witness and ultimately causing Stockton's exile from the Ferguson family. This eventually leads to the accident in which Stockton dies. When Stockton dies, Jack creates his own story, enhancing the mysticism that the tree where Stockton died was the same tree he fell from as a child. Dolores, who was curious about Stockton, knew about the spirit/vampire/curse scam (inferred from the interaction with the traveling vendor of "protective" objects). She goes to the tree where Stockton died to satisfy her curiosity and is surprised by Michael. He challenges her to "climb up and shake him down," which she appears to do to scare Michael and subsequently falls from the tree (as she had a bloody hand and neck). Michael confuses the accident with an attack by the already deceased Stockton. The marks left on Dolores' neck were purely coincidental from the accident, and Jack wanted to use this to his advantage. Jack, who had read "The Vampyre" in Stockton's literature (remembering that he had visited Stockton's home several times), wanted to use Dolores as a "sacrifice" to become a vampire. First, he poisoned the Ferguson family dog for his experiments, and then he poisoned Dolores when caught by Carlotta. He left, assuming that the sacrifice where he had to "bring her to the brink of death but no further, then care for her until she recovers with all the outward appearance of love" was already completed, and now only his "violent end" (according to "The Vampyre") remained to become a vampire. Carlotta saw Jack administering the poison, prompting her to suck it out (giving Ferguson the idea that she was turning into a vampire). Watson later finds the vial of poison (curare) that Jack left on the floor and informs Holmes. Ferguson, believing Stockton was still alive, went to retrieve his body to "definitively kill him," and Jack hit him from behind, knocking him unconscious. Finally, we have Jack's suicide, believing that he had already become a vampire. This leaves us with the conclusion that: - Both the blacksmith and the baby died from influenza. - Carlotta and Dolores were attracted to Stockton, causing Ferguson's reactions. - Jack aspired to be like Stockton. - Stockton believed he was a vampire and died in an accident. - Jack committed suicide, believing he had fulfilled "The Vampyre" ritual to become a vampire. - Vera was suffering from influenza.

Read the books about a hundred times more, THEN rewatch all those different versions. There is no comparison. The Granada company's Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett is hands down the most book exact representation of the character there is. Brett 100% based his Holmes on Doyle's books. He kept a file on the desk on the set of Holmes' study that detailed exactly what Doyle had the man doing. When he wasn't sure, he referenced. As a method actor he became Holmes...even to the point of making himself sick. Holmes' demeanor was so opposite Brett's super happy jovial self that he had to 'take a break' and spend time in a psychiatric hospital (with meds) to get out of the depression he found himself in because of his acting method. Having read all of Holmes' adventures repeatedly since I was about 8 years old and watched every "English" language version of Holmes I could get a hold of, I still find Brett's portrayal to be the most on point and character correct to the books there is. I've enjoyed watching all the others and their versions for different reasons (Cumberbatch being modernly quirky, Downey being exciting and rousing and Rathbone being dour and somewhat aristocratic, as examples) but at the end of the day, Holmes is still an extraordinary and complex character and if anyone anywhere was able to capture the fullness of that sometimes manic mind it was Jeremy Brett. The last few Holmes stories Brett was still the main character in were difficult to watch as his health was so rapidly deteriorating due to his heart condition and the toll the old 80's meds took on him, but to still portray the character so closely despite it, is a master class of his dedication to the character. He was a craftsman who strove for perfection in his art and his Holmes was certainly that.

Rathbone is a very close second but his films were spoilt for me by the portrayal of Watson as an idiot as he was most certainly not written this way by Conan Doyle! It’s odd how they started lengthening short stories, I mean, if they really wanted to do more feature length episodes, adapt “A Study in Scarlet” or “The Valley of Fear”, I find it sad that those two books aren’t getting more recognition

this film is a cut above the average. Some good acting and the scene in the public house reminded me of some old Dutch painting but the village looks much too clean and prosperous for the times.

The splendiferous wreckage of what was originally a poignant, beautifully written short story, in which Holmes visited the afflicted party and solved the problem with a single glance at the older brother. This is not the best butter - though I love all the scenes with Brett and Hardwicke just enjoying acting together for their own sake if not the story's.

Rare to see two such good versions of Dr. Watson as seen in this series. They had to replace one for another, but both 'versions' were equally good. At least as close as one could hope for. And I've seen poorly done versions of Watson in other Sherlock versions. That's for sure...

It was an interesting take on the Sussex Vampyre. Quite a departure from the original. Stockton is a complete invention for this and pads out an otherwise fairly short story. Was a better tale than Doyle's in fact.
