I do wish that Jeremy Brett had lived long enough to complete all the 56 short stories and 4 novels, in the same way that David Suchet has given us the complete Poirot series. Brett remains the greatest of all screen Holmes.

In an interview, I heard Jeremy Brett giving tribute to all Sherlock Holmes actors before him, Basil Rathbone was more athletic, for example, and Edward Hardwicke knew the Watson teamed with Rathbone. That Watson, Nigel Bruce was played for laughs as it was WWII years. Jeremy did not want to ruin anyone's ideal Holmes. I remember him asking how does someone portray genius, as Sherlock was said to be? I like Rathbone but Jeremy Brett and, David and Edward as Watson used Conan Doyle's stories. Except for Hound Of The Baskervilles, I had not seen any Holmes series before this series. Cumberbatch and were okay, good acting, some too tense for me. Cheers, Peace, Sherlock Holmes fans.

I wanted to leave this comment for "The Crooked Man," but comments were turned off . . . although it will certainly be true for every episode in this amazing series. Brett's face is a constantly changing canvas, registering every conceivable expression known to detectivekind, quick as lightning, conveying in the lift of an eyebrow, the curl of a lip, the twitch of a nostril, conveying his thoughts as clearly as if he had spoken. His must surely have been the most expressive face in the British film industry.

I am an International person: a painter and a fashion designer, currently living in Arizona. When I was a young girl growing up in the center of Moscow, Sherlock Holmes was one of my favourite heros. The Russian translation was brilliant and we had all volumes of Conan Doyle in our room (yes, I grew up in a commune flat). Later when I lived in Budapest I reread it in Hungarian. Hungarian translators are also amazing. Only when I lived in UK (Windsor) and I knew English well enough, I reread the adventures in English (that's how I know that both of the translations were absolutely incredible.) I have watched many versions of Sherlock Holmes from different countries, directors with excellent actors and my verdict is: Jeremy Brett and Vasily Livanov (Soviet/Russian series 2006) are the best, but their interpretations of the character are completely different. In Russia, Conan Doyle’s famous pair has always been seen as the epitome of flawless English style. Their vital attributes were keen wit, a bright mind, a sophisticated sense of humor, self-deprecation, an aristocratic view of the world, straight morals, and an exquisite sense of style. Russian series called: "Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson", because the personality of Doctor Watson is shown in such a powerful way that his role is equally important in the film. I can't say I have seen a better Watson than Vitaly Solomin. I don't know whether this Soviet film is available with English subtitles. Her Late Majesty Elizabeth II, gave Vasily Livanov an order of the British Empire (OBE) for “the most convincing portrayal of Holmes in world cinema.” When I visited London for the first time, I didn't go to British Museum , or National Gallery, or Buckingham Palace first, but I went to see the apartment of my old friends on Baker Street. To my astonishment, I learned from the Museum keeper, that there are still letters arriving to Mr. Holmes with requests to solve various mysteries.

I came across Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes about 2-1/2 years ago... and I got hooked... now at 76+ years old, I still come back to see one or two Jeremy Brett's Sherlock movies. I grew up watching the same stale Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone; I couldn't understand why Watson was portrayed an almost dim-witted buffoon, after all, he was a medical doctor, a former officer in the Queen's military, yet he was always bumbling through the movie. but Jeremy Brett's Watson is an intelligent man who questions Sherlock. Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes, and the best actor every to portray the legendary sleuth.

I totally agree with you. In the Rathbone films, Watson was made out to be a bumbling fool. If there was a bucket with water in it, the Watson in the Rathbone movies would most certainly have put his foot in it. The two actors that portrayed Watson in the Jeremy Brett series gave us the true Watson, an intelligent medical doctor who had served in Her Majesty's military during one of the Anglo-Afghan wars and the loyal partner of Holmes who kept him grounded.

Jeremy Brett was excellent in bringing Sherlock Holmes to life in a fully believable and magical manner that no other actor has come close to. I strongly suspect that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would have approved of Jeremy's portrait of Sherlock Holmes. You are dearly missed and will remain the one and only true Sherlock Holmes for me.

Gosh the way his hands shake before turning off the lamb was amazing! ❤ And as someone else said their conscious choice to leave the snake off camera to amplify the essence of mystery and fear while they had filmed it with the snake on set was simply amazing 👏 clearly this production was out of this world! ❤

I love that they kept these episodes so close to the actual written stories; Jeremy Brett was the perfect Sherlock Holmes. Even with everyone complaining in the comments about how snakes don't drink milk or have ears, who cares? The point is that it's a good story. It doesn't have to be changed so everything is factual. It's fiction; it doesn't need to be factual. That would be like rewriting Harry Potter because he couldn't get a lightning bolt shaped scar on his head from a magic wand, or rewriting Independence Day because Will Smith couldn't realistically drag a dead alien body for miles through the desert by himself. Fiction doesn't have to be true, just entertaining. If people only want stories that are perfectly factual, then watch nonfiction. Otherwise, enough about the snake, lol.

Love this story and this episode. This was the first Sherlock Holmes story I was ever exposed to. I recall it was sometime in the late 80s when I was 8 or 9 and it was on PBS I think. The two scenes I always remembered most were when Julia came stumbling out of her room and died in that hallway and when Holmes & Watson come upon the doctor dead with the snake wrapped around his neck. I can trace my fear of snakes to that particular moment. Jeremy Brett remains my favorite Holmes. He's the right amount of slightly off-putting manner/intelligence mixed with dashing. He can be blunt, but also capable of being supportive & gentle with those he's helping. All in all, very enjoyable!

This episode is so well-done, in terms of acting, directing, and everything else. I like how in the credits they show an alternative version of the snake appearing and Holmes driving it off, almost as if to simply confirm, "No, we didn't do it that way because it was easier. We kept it off-screen in that scene on purpose. See? Here it is. On-screen."

47:04 I love this small detail where Watson looks seemingly surprised, and somewhat bewildered. In the later scene it’s confirmed that there was a mirror behind him, and the direction which he was looking at, just happened to be where the ventilator was located; you can tell from the distinctive shadowy form, which reflected itself on the mirror. The shadowy movement caught Watson’s attention, as he wasn’t expecting it at all, and subtly hinting that the criminal was about to send his enforcer to the victim.

Even though the one shown in the episodes are actually World War I/II vintage Webley revolvers and Watson apparently carried a Webley Bulldog model which available when he was a regimental surgeon in the Second Afgan War, they are quite similar. Getting an authentic Bulldog would have been difficult, since most in any kind of decent shape are collectors items.

Britt TV presents excellent entertainment. The concern for factual historical detail is always exceptional.

loved this Holmes episode. this video had a good ending to it. yes. even though the murderer was killed by his own method of murder. it did save considerable expense for all concerned.

Correct. Bullets cost money and it would be a shame to waste one on a bastard like that.

This series is definitive Sherlock Holmes portrayal for me. Quite unfortunate we can’t have shows like these anymore, with class and certain decorum of sorts. The new Bbc Sherlock, although good in its first season seems to be more for fans of flashy action while possessing little attention. This show, on the other hand, makes the pages of the book come to life, despite few liberties here and there.
