It does keep you guessing as to whether or not Jeff Myrtlebank simply came back to life or was he really dead and his body was taken over by a demon.

The match lighting itself and the quip about his son being a Senator hints that Lucifer, himself, now inhabits Jeff and that his son is the Anti-Christ. Many in America have interpreted the actions of the Anti-Christ in Revelations to be one of an American politician. Omen III starring Sam Neil used this interpretation as it's plot.

I liked that they never actually explained if Jeff WAS resurrected, or if it was a demon wearing his skin. We simply have to fill in the blanks ourselves, drawing our own conclusions.

I believe that his body was taken over by a demon. How else do you explain how he killed those flowers that he just picked for Comfort? Or was able to finally beat Orlin after getting his butt whooped by him for years?

It's him, he just came back from the beyond with a few new talents.

My hungarian great-grandfather died and "resurrected" a day later out of the coffin, at dawn in front of everyone. My grandma said they kept the coffin in the attic afterwards and he died again, this time for real at very old age around 100. This episode reminded me of that lol.

@@galaxyskeleton Thanks! Grandma told me this story only once and fairly recently. Happened sometime in the 1940s. She even joked about him being the vampire. Aparently everyone liked him so she and other children cried a lot and called for him during the wake. In those parts of Europe even small children would atend the wake held in the house, usually all night long. He was just laying there in a coffin and then got up in the morning. Don't know the details but I'm sure many people were freaked out lol. No one knew what to do so they left the coffin in the attic. Had to be weird living with your own coffin upstairs. But he lived quite a long time after that and never spoke about that event to anyone.

@@boreanknight Oddly enough, this was why they had wakes. It was hard to determine if people were really dead in the olden days, so they'd have a party with the corpse to see if it would "wake" up.

@@theproplady It's understandable considering the US was also part of the "buried alive panic" in the 1800s. It was mainly around Germany but did make to US to influence local myths and legends.

I don't think Serling was referencing and actual U.S. Senator. It was Serling making an offhand remark about politicians being evil.

What an interesting episode. The change of attitude in Jeff didn’t immediately ring any supernatural bells for me, though. After all, plenty of people who have been to the brink of death and survived state that having gone through with that experience made them change their outlook on their lives and so they change certain aspects of it. Some people become more peppy and willing to enjoy life more, even the small things. Honestly, if it weren’t for that reveal in the end, I would’ve thought that it was simply the townsfolk letting their superstitions get the better of them.

Yea I was thinking a lot of his actions seems like there is an explanation -fasting often causes a smaller appetite due to stomach deexpansion(the two eggs) -a near unaliving experience may cause some people to be more optimistic(his new love for work) -the unalived roses(if you bundle them up the way he did on a hot and humid day especially near a co2 source like a broken down car they may not survive for very long) -learning how to left hook is easy and effective(him having ring fighter training) Everything except the match is not impossible to explain

I love that whatever kind of revenant Jeff is, he's not a cliched one. He isn't looking to kill everyone, he has no need vrngeance, he just wants to live with his family in the town he grew up in.

I think Jeff made his way back to his body from the afterlife and somehow was able to keep the abilities he gained as a supernatural entity, I like to think it was the love he had for his partner that gave his "spirit" the energy to repossess his corpse

As someone who watched a bunch of westerns and old shows during quarantine, it’s always great to see Edgar Buchanan in another great show. His voice is legendary, and I always love his restrained acting style.

He had a strong sense of character so what we could have been watching was a failed possession (his sickness that killed him) and him just willing his soul over what tried to possess him. After that it is like someone waking up from a weird dream where he is trying to put himself back together. He doesn't do anything evil or malicious... things just happen around him.

Also, both clips of the episode and the summary of the plot on Wikipedia told me Jeff Myrtlewood was meant to be a vampire who somehow preserved his consciousness to the point of not thirsting for blood. Not only were corpses waking up as vampires a common fear in rural areas but him not being able to feel pain and possessing super strength makes sense considering vampires' characteristics. Even the way he rose from his coffin is reminiscent of Dracula or other famous vampires.

@@kurtisdeakin Most of those aspects you mentioned were invented by Bram Stoker and other writers from the late 19th century to early 20th century. Vampiric myths in Europe and rural America never mentioned weaknesses to sunlight or garlic.

Yes vampire weakness such as sunlight & garlic 🧄 were invented by Bram Stoker along with other writers, but it’s still not possible for Jeff to be a vampire because he will need to drink blood 🩸; theirs no way around that for a vampire. That’s how vampires have always been portrayed as blood suckers. In fiction they’re certain precedents that have been established and they have to be followed. That’s why making a story with a vampire that doesn’t need to drink blood wouldn’t work or making a Halloween movie where Michael Myers speaks would not work either

@@jlev1028 In Bram Sroker book the sun doesn't hurt Dracula, he simply doesn't like and can't use his powers because at the and of the day he is a night creature. I don't remeber is the book garlis is mentioned, but since ancient time garlic was considered capable of keeping away impurities and evil spirit.

James Best was a truly fantastic actor. Very underrated for his talents in drama as well as comedy.

I haven't seen every episode of The. Twilight Zone and it's been a while since I'd seen this episode personally but this is definitely one of my top ten favorites

Seeing how Jeff Myrtlebank sits up in his coffin, I wonder if John Carpenter and/or Nick Castle were thinking of this episode when they shot the climax of “Halloween.”

Considering the "southernmost point of the Midwest" is in Missouri, I think Rod's "U.S. senator" comment either referred to Stuart Symington or Edward V. Long, both strong-willed and shrewd enough to pass civil rights legislation and refusing to kowtow to segregationist audiences.

@Dodge Morningstar Missouri was a Slave state back in the 1800s. I think the St. Louis area is more progressive and always have been then the Western and southern areas of the state.

It's a shame James Best is best remembered for that goofy role. He was a very talented actor.

My stepdad died and was revived by the EMTs. He was in a coma and for his own safety the doctors medically extended said coma in order to perform their surgery without his body trying to fight back. When it was finally safe to bring him back to consciousness, he was a very different person. In the years since he's picked up a few of his old behavioral patterns, but he's been a different person since. So I guess the short version is I have no problem believing that Jeff is still himself, he's just different after going to the other side and coming back. As for the roses and the match? Well, Hell still seems like a more plausible explanation than aliens in this particular story. Maybe he made a deal in order to come back and see his fiance or something, idk.

Heck, I didn't actually die (yet), but I went down a year ago with complications from a malignant brain tumor. Even just *knowing* death is hovering about changes you. So far (knock on wood) I have shown zero signs of the cancer returning when statistically I should be making my way into the ground at this point. I don't recommend it but near-death experiences shift all sorts of world views in a person.

Quarky episodes like this are a joy to watch. If it takes the word "Comfort" to a whole new level.

I always thought that "Comfort" is a pretty weird name for a girl!

Perhaps Jeff has had himself a little Twilight Zone episode of his own just before his miraculous resurrection. Maybe he'd struck a deal with the Devil or beat Death at chess. Perhaps there was a mix up of celestial bureaucracy or he had passed some sort of test for a second chance at life. It's like watching the aftermath of a story that wasn't told.

This is one of my favorite episodes.

For a show known for it's twist endings there sure are a lot of episodes where the twist doesn't really feel like one. I was expecting something like Jeff was actually the sole survivor or some accident that wiped out the entire town and they were the ones who really rose from the dead rather than the other way around. It would explain why the roses were dead as well as whatever wiped out the people could have also killed those flowers. The ending here doesn't even feel like an ending. An ambiguos ending can work but this just feels like the mystery is still unfolding and it just stops right when it's getting interesting. I do think the "Senator" Rod mentions was purposely left vague so the aduence could draw their own conclusion rather than calling out someone specific.

The problem with that is that looking back on it a lot of "twists" from the twilight zone don't feel like twists for us because we've seen them all before in one form or another. Back then these were probably shocking as all hell to viewers.

@@mad0813 That's not really what I meant. I mean like if it's revealed right at the beginning of the episode what the premis is then it's not really a twist. The whole point of a twist is to subvert your expectations at the tail end of the story and a lot of these episodes don't do that. The 6th Sense even when you know what the twist is because you've seen the movie a dozen times already it's still a twist ending because the movie doesn't immediatly spell it out for you. There are subtle hints here and there that you notice when you know the ending but there's nothing subtly hinted here it just is exactly what your told. Also even comparing some Twilight Zone episodes from the same era the better episodes have real twist endings that even when you know what the ending is it's still feels like a twist decades later. But then you have episodes like this where the twist isn't actually a twist because it was obviously set up at the start of the episode. Even without ever seeing it before you still know what's going to happen. I highly doubt these types of episodes would have been shocking for the time when there's literally no reveal at the end to earn that reaction.

The great thing about the best Twilight Zone episodes is you can have multiple theories and none are clearly right. I always like more grounded explanations so to me it’s still Jeff. It’s just that rising up out of his coffin was an event so impactful that it drastically changed his personality along with some coincidence that reinforced his feeling that he was a changed more confident man helping make it true. I think it’s easy to imagine a country doctor of that time being incompetent and unwilling to admit a mistake. And the match trick could be just that, maybe he anticipated something like this might happen and learned some easy magic tricks to frighten the rubes if his confidence wasn’t enough. Not saying that is the best answer just the one I like.

Nice little episode, but I can't help but think of the following dialogue, given the lead: "Now how's Roscoe gonna get out of this one?"

I'm thinking of that episode of The Dukes Of Hazzard where this doppelganger showed up during Rosco's wake claiming to be Rosco! It turned out that the real Rosco was held hostage by the imposter's cronies.

@@theproplady It could be. The majority of the episode had Bo, Luke, Boss, and Enos concerned with Rosco's strange behavior. The only one who knew that he wasn't Rosco was Flash the dog because Flash snapped at the fake Rosco and ran off. Perhaps if Jeff had a dog like Flash then the dog would've let us know whether or not that Jeff was a demon that possessed his body.

"The Grave" and "Dead Man's Shoes" are great episodes too.

This channel should just do this weekly.... thanks to you guys I bought the blu ray and the companion book. Cbs should pay you man!

I really enjoyed this episode, Jeff is a likable character, and while it's never confirmed either way if he IS the Real McCoy, you root for him and Comfort to find their happy ending.

"Comfort" is some name lmfao

Orgram: "If I had a dime for every time I whopped you, I'd have a hundred dollars!" Jeff: "That's right. But you ain't whooped me lately!"

I'm reminded of an episode of The Dukes Of Hazzard where Rosco shows up in the middle of his wake. Everyone thought he was dead from a drowning accident. The only one who knew that this "Rosco" was an imposter was Flash the dog because he didn't smell like her master. If Jeff only had a dog like Flash then everyone in town would know for sure if Jeff is who he says he is.

I would guess Tennessee's Estes Kefauver..he was a national known senator, and Tennessee's is sorta southmost-midwest

I kiiind of agree with your interpretation, mostly because I want to believe that Jeff is innocent. The episode does a good job of making him feel unjustly discriminated against. Sadly, I think it's more likely that a spirit or demon did possess his body, especially considering Rod's strange remark about the senator. If he was taking a shot at someone, that implies that Jeff was indeed replaced by something evil, or became so due to his powers. I want to say it's one of those cases where Rod's narration confirms the answer to the mystery (like in Death Ship) but it's vague enough that I can't be sure.

The comment about the Senator always reminded me of Revelation / the Anti-Christ; he’s supposed to be a world leader, or in politics in some way. Hence Damien being a son of an Ambassador and then seemingly adopted by POTUS at the end of the Omen. And Rod said the Congressman was said to be especially “shrewd.” Maybe it’s a hint at something a little darker than Jeff’s outwardly genial nature. The fire trick helps boost this “demon- y” theory.

When I was younger and first saw this episode, I, for some reason, assumed that Jeff never actually died and that the simply doctor made a mistake, which led to the town being fueled by its' own paranoia when he came back to "life". It would've been an interesting twist for the episode if that was the case as there wouldn't have been anything "supernatural" about. Just another tale of mankind's fear and ignorance of the unknown.

The doctor stated to the men in the general store that he tested Jeff to make sure he was dead. He did the mirror test to see if his breath would fog up the glass. The glass didn't fog up.

Maybe the senator is Joe McCarthy? Granted, he was born in 1908 and died before this episode aired, but he was from the same area this episode is supposed to be from (midwest) and I guess if you're gonna have the spawn of evil being a senator no one better/worse, right?

I doubt it. He was born in Wisconsin. The people in this story are obviously from further south. Plus he was born long before the 20s like you said. He also died before this episode was shot. Also, going after socialists is far from being evil incarnate. Plenty of corrupt Senators on both sides of the aisle in the 50s and 60s

McCarthy wasn't actually evil. he was more or less right...but I see what you mean, because despite Mccarthy being 100% correct about Marxist infiltration, the theme of the story is mob thinking. Of course, the townspeople are right.

It's The LAST Rites of Jeff Myrtlebank and the FIRST of these videos since the YouTuvbe redesign that came out of nowhere.

This episode is one of my favorites. I think it's definitely one of the creepiest, but I rarely hear people talk about it. I've always interpreted that Jeff was actually taken over by some sort of demon-type entity (I think the comment about the senator also hints at this), and the ending moment with the flame and the gate gives me chills. I enjoy it being opened ended, but I think if you interpret it as him simply being resurrected, the episode becomes much less unsettling.

I think they're both magic!

I think the answer is...that there is no answer. Sometimes strange things just happen and the reason is just that: That they happened. Personally, I think it's much creepier that way.

His founding great grandfather..hence the line about he's always been there and the work ethic...plus he never had a pipe before resurrection

If I was wrote this episode, I'd have it explained that Jeff won a card game against the devil. And that the deal was that if Jeff won, he'd get to come back to life with some demonic powers, but if the devil won, HE gets to come to life in Jeff's body. So you can't if Jeff or the devil in his body.

I'm not sure why the senator has to be a specific person. I'd always assumed that it was just general political satire, playing off the stereotype of the slimy politician.

This reminds me a little of the old ideas of changelings and some of the atrocities committed by people who convinced themselves that their loved ones had been replaced by beings from the Otherworld. I personally think that's what happened here and the being who took the identity of Jeff wasn't necessarily evil - that quip about a senator at the end may have been a reference to the idea that people with mixed human/otherworld heritage had unusual powers (maybe it was a joke about his longevity - especially since Jeff granted Comfort immortality - or how his speeches had a "magical" quality).

In The Twilight Zone, anything can happen, often without background development into the specific mechanisms involved, whether plausible or not. This is one of the premises of the show. As for how Jeff rose from the dead, he genuinely doesn't seem to know himself which makes the idea of an alien presence not reasonable. Nor, is it a spirital resurrection. The best explanation is that the viewer can always expect to expect the unexpected in such a fictional world.

He made a general, sarcastic remark about all politicians. He wasn't targeting an individual.

Maybe he was always a supernatural being and was in denial or just didn’t realize it until he died and was able to come back. Now he’s realizing his “powers”.

The powers may not even be under his control, he might just exude small bits of power from beyond 😂

This episode always reminded me of my Grandmother talking about seeing dead people out of the corner of your eye during the Spanish Influenza.

Well he's definitely not late, in fact he's the right on time Jeff Myrtlebank! I love this one because it's implied to be set in Missouri. Since, I am from Missouri, I love any shout out to my home state. If I had to hazard a guess, the senator might have been Edward V. Long. A Democrat, Long pushed for the Civil Right Act and after this episode aired in 1966 wrote the final draft for the Freedom of Information Act. He was born in rural Whiteside in Lincoln County, Missouri so that checks but he was born in 1908 so a bit old for the timeline (Plus even though Missouri is considered the southernmost point of the Midwest, Lincoln County itself is in the northeast of the state.) But the rural background fits. Also, I love the sweet rural atmosphere and folklore. I'm surprised that it wasn't written by Earl Hamner.

Last Rites of Jeff. What he experienced is he died, and when you come back you pick up supernatural abilities. And the town don’t understand. I’ve had several near deaths. I’ve come back, and can do the same things, dying flowers, fire manipulation, bringing humans back from terminal or brain dead diagnoses, enter people’s minds. It does frighten those around me. I took pictures and video of the people that are alive today. Even they freak out. Especially, their friends. They think I am evil as well.

In the late 1910's and early 1920's, some victims of the Spanish Flu would often fall in a catatonic phase and, in this state, had such a weak heartbeat, barely perceptible with the instruments of the time, that doctors should have been very careful before declaring someone dead. Unfortunately, such was not the case. Many an exhumed or accidentally unearthed casket later revealed the deceased had actually woken up from their hibernating convalescence only to discover they had been buried alive, as scratch marks, torn casket lining and clothing were discovered. 💀 As to why Jeff Myrtlebank's interests have shifted, to have everyone who loved and surrounded you suddenly think you're dead and act upon it is a pretty life-shattering experience, wouldn't you agree?

The resurrection score reminds me of something out of classic Doctor Who. If it was a shot at a senator in the 60s, then present day. It could have been a shot at Nixon or Kennedy

Honestly, I'm pretty sure he was a demon. The tells: fire; the match (sulfur); dead/black flowers (quite an evil visual, as well as the innocence of a flower being withered in his presence); revenge/power over humans in beating the brother up; the delightful jab about his son being in politics.

My question is why would there had been air holes drilled into the side of the coffin? In the Navy, we did that so at burials at sea, the water rushes in and we don’t have coffins setting sail.

I would have thought the twist would be that all the other townsfolk died through some gas leak or whatever and just joined him in limbo, waiting for judgement.

Rod's 'senator' remark was simply a dig at politicians. It wasn't based on any particular person. Hell, that's as obvious as a mouse turd in a sugar bowl!

In my opinion, the senator he was talking about was senator Henry Styles Bridges for two reasons. The first reason is that Rod sterling was a liberal Democrat, who, whenever he could would use Republicans as villains and Democrats as heroes and senator Bridges was a Republican politician, now reason number two is that Rod sterling was somewhat of an ally of the LGBT community, and Senator Bridges was infamously known for pushing Wyoming senator Lester C, Hunt a Democrat to commit suicide after senator Bridges threaten to out Senator hunt’s son who is gay, and the thing is that it more or less became public knowledge right after senator hunts death in 1954 and another thing I just realized is that right about the time this would’ve been filmed is when senator Bridges would be in the news because of his death via heart attack
