Tommy, who had been living in Jackson the whole time, and had even started trading with outsiders, therefore was comfortable identifying himself. You can also find notes from other people in Jackson that went out on patrols saying that they had offered strangers the opportunity to come back to Jackson.

@@alisoyupak2730 Joel is literally the ultimate paranoid survivor, it's fundamental to his character and what has allowed him to live for decades in a hostile apocalypse. Being forced to shelter with potential enemies doesn't mean you immediately lower your guard and become chummy - that's a common sense lesson Joel would have learned ages ago. And that goes double for when you're right outside of the town you're protecting, which Tommy specifically mentions is vulnerable to attack from groups like hunters. The fact is these people meant Joel great harm, and the real Joel would have sensed that a mile away. But alas, he needed to die, and the writers took the lamest and laziest way to achieve that - they dumbed him down.

Nah, he got exactly what he wanted. He knew people would react like this, it's part of his artistic vision and exactly why Joel was killed at the start of the game, with no attempt to humanize Abby to start off. Get people to hate Abby, then try to convince them otherwise. Anyone who is unable to let go is labelled an immoral person for not forgiving Abby, or criticized for "not understanding the games message".

Considering we saw that THING beat Joel to death and after that celebrating by «getting it» from behinde Who wouldn’t be traumatized?

As soon as Tommy acts like an idiot and goes on a suicide mission I already felt like the characters were now just plot devices and didn’t actually have brains in this game.

I have come back to this review years later just because of how much Joe tells the truth in this one and how funny the skits are. TLOU2 still really leaves a sour taste in my mouth story wise and I have honestly thought about going back to give it another shot but there is no way I can bare this story a second time.

It's a remarkable game and Joe has no credibility given the fact that he covered the leaks and developed a strong hatred for the story before playing it. His critiques of the story are laughable and childlike. This review was a low point for this channel.

We should definitely get him as a DLC character and have more flashbacks inside of flashbacks inside of more flashbacks and have his sisters uncles brothers step fathers grandmother special ed son hunt Ellie down and kill her within 37 minutes of the game. And have 75% of the game be played as the sons neighbor who’s caught cheating and have him be redeemed until they catch up to the main timeline when Ellie dies. Idk that was messy but I still made a better story than this game did 🤣😂🤣

I don't know who were the "main" writers of that game, but it's obvious they straight up copied the plots of The Road and Children of Men... and Naughty Dog made it seems like they invented this kind of post-apocalyptic drama, they took credit for something created by Cormac McCarthy and P. D. James. Which is disgusting, I just can't take this seriously... and guess what, these novels didn't had sequels, so Naughty Dog had to come up with their own story... and look at the result. I really hope in the near future, when Last of Us 3 becomes a thing, even more condescending and messier, people will look back at the first two games and realize they were never great to begin with, plagiarism does not deserve praise, period

@@darn0k1 Bruce Straley was the main writer for the first game, iirc. He was the one who shot down Neil's stupidest ideas, chief among them being that he wanted to make the second game's plot be the first game's. Apparently Tess, instead of Joel's most trusted partner/closest friend/probable lover, would have been a recurring antagonist tracking Joel and Ellie across the country because she wanted revenge after Joel killed her brother in a firefight. Bruce took one look at that plot and went "Tracking a person on foot for thousands of miles in a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic wasteland? That's absurd and totally immersion-breaking, that's going on the cutting room floor." He's well-regarded for fun, character-building dialogue, which the first game has in spades with Joel and Ellie. He co-directed all of the Uncharted games with Amy Hennig, but left after the release of Uncharted 4, which makes sense since that game was essentially Neil Druckmann strong-arming Hennig out of the company, throwing out her original plot and script, and shooting the franchise that was Straley and Hennig's baby in the head. The abominable crunch with UC4 because of Druck throwing out the original script also probably pushed him to leave. The Last of Us' good writing almost certainly rests on Straley's shoulders infinitely more than Druckmann's.

I'm convinced Mel (pregnant lady) was written into the story by a man or a childless woman. NO mother who was pregnant a few months would've said "Oh yeah, when I was 7 months along, I totally was ready to fight some Zombies and soldiers!" Came here after HBO announced they weren't changing the story for season 2. Everyone in the comment section of that post said the story for TLOU2 is the best story ever written. I came here to find my people because TLOU2 was a huge fuck you to anyone who actually likes the first game.

There's going to be a hard wakeup call when season 2 introduces basically Galadrial, right down to the character shilling and refusal to treat this character as having any flaws, and has Abby take over the entire show and be treated with no nuance compared to Joel and Ellie (who's characters were already made worse preemptively to promote Abby) That didn't work for the Rings of Power, it didn't work for The Woman King, and it's not going to work for TLOU2. While your average person, especially an HBO subscriber, isn't particularly savvy, it's pretty universal that people despise flawless characters in serious stories.

The thing I'm most pissed off about is the hypocricy. Revenge is bad for Ellie but then Abby does it it's ok. In general, one of the things I hate the most is hypocricy and double standards.

I just finished the game today. Feelings lots of feels about Joel and Ellie. Now I’m allowing myself to look at all the things that could have spoiled me through the years like this video lol. If you want my honest thoughts on this subject, I think it doesn’t matter. Ellie wanted Abby dead so that it could bring her peace, but at the end I think she accepted that she won’t get it. Killing Abby won’t bring Joel back. It won’t make her happy. But at least if she lets Abby live a little kid may have a life.

No it wasn’t “ok” for Abby. She got her revenge, but in the end it proved not to do anything for her. She was still having nightmares about her dead father. Her mission to kill Joel also fragmented her friendships and pushed them away, plus Ellie killed most of them as a direct result of Abby getting revenge. The point is that Abby went through with it and got punished for it, and while Ellie got punished as well, at least she was better than Abby in her ability to spare her.

But a game showing fullblown nudity and the equivalent of gay sex, is A-Okay. I've been with sony since it's first console was introduced, and they were a beacon for developers and expression in games, these days, you know it's backwards when their competitor Nintendo, is being lax on sexual themes in video games! The PS5 doesn't look promising if this blatant censorship and xenophobia of foreign games continues.

Well they say why, they're not quiet about it. After all, how many times have you seen "You just didn't understand it?" Pay close attention to what they act like "understanding" is: unthinking sycophancy and adherence to dogmatic repetition of others' statements. Because they do this version of "understanding," which is not actually comprehension like you or I know understanding to be, it makes them feel smart. When you criticize the game, they don't take it as criticism about the game, it's critique against themselves. Because after all, if they don't *actually* understand it, then they're not that smart for pretending they do, now are they?

I really like your suggestion of having players play as Abby and her father first not knowing who they are, it would've made us develop a liking to them, only to eventually find out Abby's dad (who the players would've been attached to as a "Joel" figure at that point), is the doctor Joel killed in the first game. That would've been SO much better! God, I wish we could go back in time and rewrite the past.

@@FireStarJutsu I disagree because this isn't the same kind of thing that part 2 was aiming for. We had to know next to nothing about Abby so we could have that enormous wall of hate to overcome. Giving her a backstory before she killed Joel horrifically would offset the impact of the ending when you realise you don't want both women to continue suffering. It's only because we don't understand anything about Abby at the start that we can begin to understand her through learning her backstory and seeing her developing relation with a child from an enemy faction. I'm not saying that idea which you proposed wouldn't work - hiding the relationship between Abby and her father with the story of Ellie and Joel's but it would've resulted in a way different theme and experience than what was intended.

You talk about the ending and players "not wanting both women to suffer anymore" and there's no way you can guarantee all players come to that opinion. Having Abby be a random that kills Joel does form that wall of hatred pretty well, but it runs the risk of that wall never melting away regardless of how much of her backstory or new relationship with Lev we experience. I feel like that's the angle you're not acknowledging. Look at Tommy. If a character in game can maintain that hatred, knowing what Joel did. Knowing Abby lost everyone else. Knowing she has Lev to take care of, and none of it mattering because of what she did to Joel...players will have that opinion too. Doing it in the inverse creates a genuine new bond for the players to form. One very similar to the one that worked in the first game. Players would connect with Abby and her dad's relationship naturally without the baggage of hating Abby for Joel's death. Making Joel's death more of a conflicting emotional event than just a "wall of hatred" producing event. I really don't think the themes would be that much different. The only difference between them is that with one, we don't feel that pure desire for revenge Ellie felt. We instead feel conflicted because we understand there's no right or wrong. Abby felt immense pain too. Joel was no saint. Actions have consequences. And revenge is a poison. Literally all themes the game tries to hamfist down the player's throat later down anyway, are more effectively executed this way. Sacrificing one minor intention for the overall success of many other of the game's themes results in a better story in my opinion

When i the player didnt want revenge anymore, just wanted to be in peace with Dina in Farm, the game continued. And i tried to NOT kill Abby. To see If there were an alternate path. But i had to smash that drowning button. The prompt dissapeared exactly when i stopped pressing the Button in a last try of "alternate ending". I was fucking relieved when Ellie let Abby go. I feeled the revenge and i feeled the last fucking moment of regret. Just as Ellie. I thing ND did EXACTLY what they intended to do.

@yumartins7872 and that's alright. I'm genuinely glad you were able to have that experience. But I doubt that's the majority of the player base, yunno? I mean, I myself, in the end did the exact same thing as you. To be fair. I hesitated and died many times on that beach fishing for an alternative ending. But it wasn't because of any compassion for Abby or even Lev. It was simply because I felt Ellie didn't need that hanging over her. The guilt of Joel's death wouldn't have been as severe as the guilt of her revenge I think. I also think she should have stayed on the farm with Dina and the baby. I'm not saying it was completely ineffective the way they did it... just that, in my opinion, reversing the events would have helped it reach more players.

@@letsBrn fr, I’m still waiting on his next vid but it seems he’s going for hour long videos now so who knows what he will come up with next. I’m going to miss the idea of what last of us part 2’s story was suppose to be, if you ask me, this was suppose to be a coming of age story for Ellie while being a departure from Joel (whether it’s her leaving Joel to possibly find her mother or search for answers, with Joel dying in the 2nd or 3rd game). Because Ellie and Joel are what makes last of us, and what’s ironic is that Neil druckman had said that in the grounded documentary. It was really exciting for me to see where it would go with Ellie, and this mystery character that looks like it could possibly be Ellie’s mom or someone related. The fact she was 19 and I was 19 when the game released, with the game taking place in Washington where I had lived. With Ellie being someone like me who always wears converse and bullshits lol. I had even pre-ordered the game with the collectors edition before the leaks had come out about the story. I had ignored it though cause in my mind I was thinking there’s no way the story is gonna be bad. Then the first hour of the game happened and I was furious ngl when I saw her bring up the golf club so early into a 25 hour game. And Abby is not even related to Ellie as her mom or sister. Joel’s swept under the rug unless you count that one flashback with them which I thought was amazing, tommy is just all over the place and Dina and Ellie’s relationship doesn’t feel as purposeful or bittersweet in any way . And the story just went nowhere and I wish it never happened if I knew it was gonna be this bad. It hurts to say honestly cause that’s how much I wanted the 2nd game to be good, it may be weird to some but stories are everything to humanity.

I gave this game a chance, even after all the backlash it received. Mind you, I borrowed a copy from a friend, I wasn't about to spend my money on this. I didn't get too far, I made it to the Seattle portion, and gave up. The game on Grounded difficulty, which is what I always play through the first game on was so difficult, I wasn't having any fun. Where in the first game, you could use various tactics, and strategies to get through situations as long as you managed your inventory well enough. Well in this game, the only tactic I found semi-useful was running in circles around whatever area I was in until Dina killed all the infected because she has unlimited ammo, and encounters with Clickers are basically unavoidable now. I eventually put this game down, and just watched through the rest of the story on KZread. Disappointing, we waited seven years for a sequel that we didn't need, and got a game we didn't want.

I am honestly so afraid of what is going to happen in the TV series season 2. I love Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey

I'm in a win win scenario for season 2 of the show right now. Scenario 1. Neil listened to the fans, got off his high horse, and said, "Hey, maybe I did some things wrong." And then he changes the story of fixes it somehow. We Win. Scenario 2. Neil doubles down on his decision to keep the story the exact same and then this will lead to EVEN more outcry and anger. And also an ENTIRE new audience of people who aren't gamers will join in on the rage. We Win. So you see it's actually perfect my comrades because we are in a win win no matter what.

I mean the first game establishes many times that Joel isn’t a good guy. At least he wasn’t. And him killing Abbys father is one of the more “harmless” things he does... And don’t forget, you as the player want Abby dead for what she did to Joel, but don’t forget you killed her father too... The same thing.

This is a telltale game more than it is a zombie game. I dont even think its a zombie game with such poor reference to science or even the pretty well known area of biology from a layman. You dont have to be a dr to know fungus is the most stupidest choice for zombie apocalypse. Virus, Bacterial, Alien xenobiology, protozoan, fuck even archae would have made a better choice. The amount of true research depth done is the tell tale sign of how much effort was given for nuance and realism. And this lazy attitude can be seen across the entire series right from even part 1. Fungus general can survive out of dying things thats it. If the fungus were to continue the infection, it would need the host to be dying...not flailing around or with horde migrations..thats climate and geology which have no effects on fungus. Now that i think about it, even mutated algae wud have been more believable. This is not a zombie game, its a stoopid person who thinks hes a scientist or scifi writer game who completely obfusticates himself

I’m currently replaying the game after almost 3 years on my PS5 and while the graphics, gameplay and animations are phenomenal, the story and especially the tideous looting is what drags this game down. This seriously could have been the best game ever made, but the story was told very poorly

I just watched the last 20 minutes of the game, and liked it. Basically from right before the boss fight till the end. I thought it was well done. Probably an unpopular opinion on this channel. Now, that's not necessarily how I'd feel about the execution of the game as a whole. Just the story, as a concept. Joel kills Abby's dad, betrays Ellie. Ellie doesn't forgive him, Abby kills Joel, denying Ellie ability to forgive him. Ellie tracks Abby across the land, has opportunity to kill Abby to take revenge, and forgives her. She couldn't forgive Joel, but she can forgive Abby. Just that concept, ignoring the execution, is pretty beautiful IMO. Note, I never played either of these games, I don't even own a PS4. But I think I can still comment on the story as a concept.

Albert Johnston you don’t understand. you didn’t spend the whole first game establishing an emotional connection with joel. you didn’t wait 7 years for the sequel. ND destroyed joel’s character for shock value. they made him leave his guard down which he would never do, and brutally murdered him with a golf club at the hands of someone we not only don’t know, but also don’t like. then we had to play as them. then we finally got a chance for a little bit of satisfaction and were denied that too. it’s terrible all around

Though I do think the ending was executed well, if you isolate the shit out of it. As in, if a person like myself who has little context aside from knowing the overall story watches it, yeah, it's good. But I totally understand how that could be frustrating as shit to an invested person. I saw another comment that compared it to if John Wick left the guy alive that killed his dog, or even worse if it tries to make you like the guy and dislike John Wick. Fuck. That.

It's more like: you are forced for 20+ hours to gorge on hundreds of mud-pies all childishly made and poorly constructed as enemies thus slowly working your way from dining table after kitchen table until lastly reaching (the last of us dessert boss)... (a piece of cake no less and its at the kids table.) One slice that you truly deserve to savor the flavor of as Abby finally surrender their brawny grasp on it and hand it over to you, it is your just deserts. But you suddenly decline the offer and like a tick now fully engorged, you say: "no thanks, I'm full." And then you foolishly desert your mission and slink off into the desert to die of dehydration or heat exposure.

We should have been given the opportunity to avenge joel. Thats all I was thinking the entire time was "wow I cant wait to kill this butch bitch who killed my favorite character..." and then NOPE stolen from us. Our righteous revenge is not allowed. but its WONDERFUL for abby to get her revenge right? but not us?... screw that. It would be one thing if it was done well, but the story is not done well at all

Seeing this review makes me feel justified for refusing to give naughty dog my money for this game. Haven't played, and I just can't give myself over to it even though my love for the first one is incredible.

All they had to do was make a prequel to the first game. About Tommy and Joel and how they survived after the outbreak. How joel met Tess and bill. Tommy joining the fireflies and what caused joel and Tommy split up. So much potential.

I decided to rewatch this review after playing TLOU Part 1 on PC. The port is terrible, but the game itself is a masterpiece. Ellie from Part 1 is a different person. This game should've ended on Part 1. If they wanted to show revenge story, they could make another game, but no Druckman is like a kid who has fun by ruining fun for other people: "Mwahahaha! I'm the devil, you will feel my power! I will ruin everything you love and make you love something you don't care about.". He guess he failed.

The Red Dead Redemption games did the concept of revenge being more harmful to the one inflicting it so much better.

@@Vishal6447 I liked TLOU1 but didn't love it. It was like a 7/10 for me at the time so going into TLOU2 I didn't have high expectations. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece but it was really good. Objectively the graphics and art direction were top notch, the gameplay and controls was solid. So when people say it was a terrible game and rate it 0/10 they make no attempt to hide their biases and clearly had some kind of expectation going in as you said. Likely wanting another game with Joel and Ellie shooting bad guys and riding off into the sunset again. This'll sound kind of harsh but there's no other word for it, it's kind of pathetic how close-minded most people here are. You just know if the game was the same, same environments, weapons, puzzles but the story and cut-scenes were changed and you played as Joel and Ellie, maybe Joel escapes and Tommy gets killed in the crossfire at the start and it's all about getting revenge for him and Abby dies at the end they'd give it a 10/10. Another complaint, they keep calling it woke, I lean right and I'm sick of the surplus of forced diversity ruining entertainment but I don't really see it. Ellie was gay in the last one, technically there's two gay teens and gay Bob in TLOU1 whereas TLOU2 has 1 gay person, 1 bi and a gender ambiguous kid. Pair that with two female leads being presented as monsters, yeah it's not really elevating men but it's making women look worse, lesbian women even! It's arguably less woke than the first game. Pardon the rant but these dudes man. They clearly watched a video of someone covering the leaks saying it's bad and formed their opinion on that with no context or build up. Then they watched a lets play of someone dunking on it, completely different approach and experience to simply just playing TLOU1 for themselves 10 years ago when their attention spans weren't as short.

Well one of the publications (Ars Technica) that was brought on to the TGAs to vote for it had a staff member (Peter Bright) caught in an FBI raid over . . . Unique images. Literally every single person who went to the TGAs that year had nothing bad to say about him, nor had any reservations about working with him/the people who knew about his personal activities. So yes, something is really god damn wrong with games journalists. And it's more fucked than we could even assume.
