Ellie grew up as an orphan in Boston's quarantine zone and attended a FEDRA military prep school, where she met and befriended Riley Abel. Ellie was celebrating her fourteenth birthday at a mall, when they were infected with the Cordyceps brain infection, to which Ellie discovered she was immune. Marlene, arrived at the end of the birth that preceded her mother's death and, as a friend that she was, promised to comply with her request to take care of Ellie.
Believing Ellie to be the key to reverse engineering a vaccine, he tasked Joel Miller, the brother of a trusted person, with escorting Ellie out of the QZ. A year-long journey across America, the two eventually formed a close bond.
Upon reaching the fireflies in Salt Lake City, Marlene informed Joel that to get the cure they would need to extract Ellie's brain and sacrifice her life. Refusing to allow this, he killed the chief surgeon and escaped with Ellie to settle in Jackson, his brother Tommy's Wyoming community. For the next four years, Ellie resented Joel for lying and not letting her be sacrificed to heal humanity. In 2038, Abby Anderson, a former Firefly and daughter of the dead surgeon, is saved by Joel while fleeing from a horde, yet Abby executed with her group of friends her revenge by killing Joel. Ellie even came to visualize the massacre and swore revenge and chased Abby to Seattle. Her efforts were unsuccessful, leading her to retire on a farm with girlfriend Dina and son JJ. Unable to sleep and live in peace with herself for not having avenged Joel, Ellie abandoned her family and chased her once again to Santa Barbara, only to look Abby in the eye and face her in a final fight where she ends up having a flash of Joel who makes her calm down and ends up sparing and forgiving Abby. Forgiveness made Ellie feel renewed and ready to return to her family, returning to Jackson once more.
