The Last Man Executed at Lancaster Castle

Ойын-сауық

Thomas Rawcliffe was the last person to be hanged at Lancaster Castle. He was 31 years old and was executed in November, 1910 for the wilful murder of his wife, Louisa.
Thomas Rawcliffe stated he agreed a mutual suicide with his wife louisa. Was this true? Did he kill her or simply do his part in the suicide pact?
Thomas was found guilty regardless, but watch the story and make up your own mind. Listen to the history and upbringing of Thomas and what he went though and decide whether you feel he was telling the truth or not.
Join me as we learn the incredible and true story of Thomas Rawcliffe, Learn his story and what led to his execution at Lancaster Castle by the Rochdale Hangman John Ellis.
This is his story…

Absolutely beautiful drone footage/music combination - those were amazing shots of the Ashton memorial but also superb shots of the castle. I hope you have done one of the amazing tours of the Castle - I’m sure they would let you do a film. You see the ‘modern’ Condemned cell in the prison, and also the Courtrooms still used today. I don’t know if you knew, but the area you did your closing presentation is the area where the public hangings were done. A scaffold would be built in that area, and the tour shows you a door/floor-to-ceiling window that the prisoner would walk through out onto the gallows. Hundreds of people would congregate in the area you were standing. It’s a fantastic tour to do, particularly now they have combined the ‘modern’ prison since it’s closure. It also shows the very old cells where the Lancashire Witches from Pendle were held/died. Bear in mind ‘witches’ of those times were generally just women who were ‘different’ within the community - sometimes they were the herbalists/healers who had knowledge of herbs/natural medicines who people would go to when there were no Doctors in existence. It is a terrible, tragic part of our history that women - generally older women - could be part of a bullying, victimising culture that would resort to terrible tortures and horrendous deaths for no reason whatsoever other than stupidity. We are currently in a better cultural place, evolving zero-tolerance of racism; but these times were part of the same type of cultural victimisation; of women - and that still actively continues in many parts of the world today. People in this country find it hard to believe that even in the 1970s/1980s a women was *still* considered a chattle of men such that they could not get a mortgage in their own right even if they were a woman of means - a man had to get the mortgage for her. So, globally, I hope humanity continues its walk to true equality for all … but we have a long way to go 💗. And women who were condemned/tortured/killed as witches now stand as witness to our historic cultural stupidity.

@@DarkFascination 🙄 sometimes people are the worst idiots. I worked for a long time for a huge heritage charity and used to meet *so* many people who, forgetting they were protecting heritage for everyone, would treat it as if it belonged to them. They also used to have very stupid rules about filming/ownership of images which started from a legislate place of wanting to ensure the places weren’t being used to promote anything negative. But with many staff it would rapidly expand into a power thing. They are forgetting all the time these places are ‘owned’ by no-one - we are simply Guardians for our tenure here to ensure they are preserved. Don’t let those types of people get you down - you are doing a wonderful job of promoting history to the world 🥰. … As my Nana used to say ‘you can’t fix stupid’ so don’t worry about them 😉

Poor man should never have had the death penalty. Wonder what happened to their children? Hope family took them in.
