I'm American, and I'd never heard of Hicks....but I live in the Pacific Northwest, and criminal history along the Eastern Seaboard is rarely heard around here. A fascinating story (may Hicks be still burning in Hell), and you present your historic stories so very well! I'm glad I stumbled onto your videos..thoroughly enjoyable, and not dry mainstream stuff. Keep them coming. You've got a new subscriber!

As you can see we share the same name. I am told my great grandfather was in the British Cavalry and lost a leg in South Africa (he never did find it). He then came to the United States and worked as a livery man for the Pratt family. I am told he was something of a neer-do-well and abandoned my grandfather. My grandfather's name was Charles Hicks. My mother said of him, "he was a very nice man." He was a Master Mason (as am I) and both he and my grandmother were Order of Eastern Star. Sadly, my grandfather pass on when I was two years old so everything I was told about him and my great grandfather is second and third hand. My DNA reveals a large percentage of my background it English, Welsh, Scots and Irish. Oddly enough, it also showed 1.5% Italian and 1.5% Greek. That would figure to be Roman soldiers meeting up with the local girls in England, yeah.
Thanks for telling the story of pirate Hicks it was fascinating. Your ability to make models and bring history to life consistently impresses me.

Wow I had no idea this took place on Liberty Island! What an interesting piece of trivia. It really re-contextualizes that part of American History to me. I’ve always heard about the history behind the Statue of Liberty, but not what happened on the island before. Fascinating stuff, Kevin!

Good comment. I will throw in a trivia of Ellis island, next to Liberty, where arriving ship passengers got checked. Back in the 70's, during a period of awarding contracts to minority firms, a company was hired to refurbish the buildings. It was not finished but before they walked away, the copper roofs were removed and sold for scrap.
We can't control who's on the branches of our family trees. Just ourselves. Thanks so much for your wonderful story telling which gives us a look into history.

Well Kevin, you and I are possibly related as well. My mother was a Hicks through her father’s side (my grandfather). Our Hicks line traces back to Queens, Jamaica, NYC and Long Island and to one of my gg something grandfathers Robert Hicks (born 1543 in England) who was a sea captain. I was born and raised in NC but 9 months ago moved to the seat of the Hicks family in SC, Chesterfield County, SC. Our Hicks line goes from NY (1600’s) to Chesterfield, VA, then to Granville County, NC and then to Chesterfield County, SC by the mid to late 1700’s.

Thank you Kevin!! Love what you do,
To refer to the individual as a pirate requires a fair amount of creative leaping, in my opinion. In my opinion, Albert Hicks is not a true pirate in the conventional sense of the term; rather, he is a murderous opportunist who has little regard for the value of human life. Your storytelling is definitely something I look forward to hearing.

Awesome video my friend. Don't fret about something a relative did long ago. We judge a man by his character and actions, not by something they had no control over nor anything to do with. I believe everyone has had at least one really bad egg in their family. Take me, for example....I'm almost positive I am related to Bonnie Parker (of Bonnie & Clyde infamy). I'm not the least bit worried about it as I wasn't even a thought back then.

It’s so sad when people who are victims go on to victimize others… It didn’t matter that the final crew cherished and respected him, and I just can’t wrap my head around that. Speaking of heads, I think that brain injuries can impact mood and personality. Not to excuse anything he did, but if I was related to him, I’d chalk it up to getting the crap kicked out of him in prison rather than a psychopathic genetic profile!

I believe the falling weight technique of hanging was used in southern Ontario for a period of time in the late 1800s. The main advantage was that the gaolers didn't have to wrestle a reluctant client to the top of a scaffold, nor was there the expense of building a platform and trap door. I am not sure what the impact of calculating the weight instead of the drop was. Colloquially, it was known as being "Jerked to Jesus". Grim.
