The LAST Lesson You Will Ever Need to UNLOCK Compression | The Moment it Finally Clicked

Today I get a golf lesson to easily get compression and forward shaft lean in the golf swing. My golf coach Dana Dahlquist goes over the proper way to use golf swing kinematics to do this, and we also go over golf tips and drills for the backswing and downswing to do all this.

What a process. Dana took everything that you learned from him and others and gave you the Pro Move. Now picture your course hole laid over this practice range. If they go on this draw path, on most holes, they'll be in the trees or cart path, but that's what he wants you to do unless you turn your body to compensate for the draw path. That way you don't think its a pull/push/hook/slice. One swing. One direction-Just like the band!

You def think too much about what you’re doing wrong and try to dive too deep into that rather than keeping things as simple as possible and focus on just the feelings when you hit a good one and trying to replicate that feeling. Your go from hitting one great then you hit one not so good and you try to dissect exactly what you did wrong instead of moving on and forgetting it. Dana is a great coach and I can tell he’s picking up on that and gives great advice and tries to break things down simply

some people need to break down what went wrong to get better though. Not every brain works the same. So, him trying to decipher what went wrong isn't that big of a deal, but he does need to focus on feeling a bit more and overthink later when watching the videos and pick that apart instead.

Great coach you have there. If you see this comment I’d recommend you hold your finish for a second or two longer and watch the ball land, especially when you hit it ok or well. You won’t see any good players recoil quickly after the finish already thinking about the next shot. Stand there and soak in the decent shots briefly. It’ll help train your nervous system to know it is free to actually go left on the way down because it knows you stand left at the finish all the time anyway. It’ll also help the feedback while you’re learning go into your mind more deeply as you watch the results fly and land rather than racing to the next shot. The only other thing I’d say is that almost everyone will tell you being analytical is bad. It’s not bad, it’s an advantage as long as you are in control of it and can discern when the right time to turn analysis on or off is. Best of luck and great channel. 👍

At 48:00 - I feel like one reason u don’t get much lag is because your arms/wrists seem very tense. If you grip the club a bit more looser and let your body relax you will generate lag without trying to. Im also biased towards a slightly more cupped wrist like in Adam Scott/Rorys swing. When your wrist gets too bowed you can’t release the club and it forces you to hold angles and rotate really hard. I’m not sure if you’ve ever played tennis but it’s the same concept. Your arms and wrists need to be really loose to generate lag and effortless power.

Jerome, thanks for making this video. I started swinging this way naturally after reading Ben Hogan, and it ruined my golf swing in a way. I would come through like Dana describes with the hands "stuck behind", and the face was always wide open. I've hit thousands of balls, and never missed a single one left. I would pour through my own recordings, and KZread instructional videos trying find out out what piece I was missing, but it's hard to find information tailored to a problem like this. It looks like it might be Dana's delofting move with the left wrist. I'm going to have to work on that one. Cheers.

So Jerome, would you say that for this lesson Dana was trying to get your swing to feel more natural with more natural whipping of your arms (which I imagine feels like lag)? To me it reminds me of when we were kids and you let your arms be loose and you would rotate your body back in forth and just let your arms swing by themselves. So as you stop rotating your arms then whip to the direction you were rotating to and your upper body now goes in the opposite direction. I hope that makes sense. For my own golf journey I’m now at the point where I try to have as few swing thoughts as possible and I’m now just trying to let my body do its thing naturally. However I’m certainly not as fluid and loose as you appeared to be when using the speed trainer.

Otherwise you are probably wasting your time and walking your natural swing farther away from its true form.

Tiger never thought about what the body does, he just makes sure the hands moves the club to the ball then release, the body facilitates this, it would look like he tries to use his body. Because of this illusion of intention, instruction is now body-focused. Dana talks about this when he talks about some player's feels when they feel only the arms moving first (but it doesn't happen). Try the Pete Cowen stuff, it's the secret, it's all in the arms/hands. I hit the ball almost pga tour average distance, tiny draw, with traditional blades and I feel I only use the arms.

He is saying exactly what Pete Cowan says. Spinning the arms down. Deloft and that works if you can clear your hips and rotate quick enough which he can do. When he was trying to get him to hit it left it's the same as what cowen says. All these people saying he is stuck. He is not stuck at all, the deloft and pressure down makes your brain want to clear otherwise your brain tells you body it's going to hit itself.

Dana should just quit coaching and leave it to the armchair critics in these comments. You people couldn’t coach a ball to roll

For a start, the shaft needs to be forward at setup, therefore dropping the trail side of the body. At impact, you simply should increase shaft lean a bit. The hands at transition work straight down toward the trail foot, creating a lateral hip motion to start the swing. You can't push off the trail foot, as that would get your hips out in front, and you're forced to get the hands in front to make up the deficit. You push down into the trail foot, not off of it. But it all starts with setting up with the shaft forward to start.

Love this video. Your ability to narrate the video is phenomenal. Your ability to communicate with the instructor is still a struggle. Get rid of the word “like” in your vocabulary to communicate better. You’re smashing these irons now. So much better than that when you first started with that instructor that somehow tries to teach on hitting mats, how’s that even possible? That guy was horrible.

Dana tries to simplify the mechanics of the swing and Jerome interrupts him with unnecessary details. I'm not sure if that's intentional for this video, but it's frustrating to over complicate things. Dana coaching methods are superb and you are lucky to have him.

What if there are people out there who have a similiar thought process as Jerome. I think it's better for Jerome to be verbal and keep asking questions, even if it's "unnecessary". It's a good way to show the Dana he's can be distracted about something else. Sometimes you need someone to remind you not to overthink. But how will they know your overcomplicating something if you just stay quiet.

The challenge is “softening” the wrists, so they HINGE, while keeping the width (left arm STRAIGHT). Us mere mortals BEND the left elbow when we hinge our wrists, thus losing width, structure, etc. 🙄 Or as my best friend says, “I can’t do that” 😩 What’s the secret? 🤫

Are you actually improving with Dana? I've seen a lot of his stuff and he's always come off as the BuzzFeed of instructors. I haven't seen anyone that already doesn't have an amazing swing actually make significant improvements with him. There are practical instructors that actually help the everyday golfer and there's guys like him who overcomplicate the swing with data and buzz words. Dont put too much weight on credentials and acclamation, it's just some popularity poll. Since you're in California, I'd check out Porzak Golf in San Diego. You can take a look at his KZread channel to get an idea.

For my personality Dana has been perfect. He understands the precise science and the kinematic and I personally need that when thinking about what I’m doing. And for someone trying to become a scratch golfer I think it’s a massive benefit

Gotcha, and that is certainly important and not to be overlooked but in the end, it's about results. For the number of lessons and amount of practice you've put in, he's hardly moved the needle and basic key fundamentals like takeaway hasn't even been addressed. Even I can tell you're not applying the right forces to the grip end causing you to suck it inside. There's a reason you'll find majority of pros and great players rehearse their on plane takeaway in their preshot routine because it outlines the rest of their swing. Sorry if I came off harsh, I just hate to see someone work so hard and get caught up in poor instruction.
