The Last Garagista: Eddie Jordan | That Racing History Podcast Episode 5

Спорт

The bright yellow Jordan cars were a fan favourite from the late 90s into the early 2000s. But like every other privately owned F1 team, Jordan sunk towards the back before EJ decided to sell up and move on while others around him like Prost and Arrows went bust.
It was a team that brought us some of the top German drivers of the time, and gave a start to someone regarded as being the best ever

Eddie Jordan is genuinely the last of the dying breed of people in F1 with an actual personality you can't help but like and listen to, we're stuck with robots or genuinely unlikeable personalities now instead Eddie, the mentioned Hesketh etc.

You could do a whole series about EJ, I remember a story about Eddie placing a one sided bet with the Bolt. Something along the lines of Bernie would shell out $80000 if Eddie Irvine out qualified the Micheal in their first head to head. Irvine duly out qualified Schumy. Irvine was walking up the pit lane wondering why the hell Eddie Jordan was jumping for joy & really happy about Irvine’s quali result🧐 he later found out even though he had left Jordan EJ was still making a profit from him 🤣

I always symphatised with these guys, they had a reasonable car to shine from time to time, especially in qualifying (for example Frentzen's 2nd slot on a 2000 British GP), even with the car somewhat declining, I became a Trulli fan exactly during his time at Jordan. Thanks a lot to Eddie for discovering and in some cases, even developing such amazing drivers, I wish they had more than a single season to fight in front. Great video mate! 👍👍👍

Eddie Jordan also had a short-lived TV show where he gave a chance for a group of young people to prove themselves in car mechanics and he was so annoyed with their lack of interest. I remember thinking to myself if I had that same chance I would have worked my arse off and done anything he asked as if he liked you he was a man who could open so many doors for you they just did not recognize the opportunity that was put in front of them.

This was incredible and very interesting, I learnt alot. Please do a lot more of these, F1 history is shrouded in so much secrecy. Putting the Camel logo on the car to push your Camel into a deal because it 'appeared" in the paper is not something you can learn in school. I appreciate this knowledge and history. Please consider talking or working with Joe Saward, he came on the Missed Apex podcast and drop not just the tea , but the whole pot about George moving to Mercedes , Albon going to Williams, even Bottas going to Alfa Romeo and Audi wanting to buy McLaren early last year.

I like Eddie Jordan. First time I encountered him was on the BBC coverage in 2009 (when I was 8 years old). Took me a while to warm up to him, but ever since he called the Schumacher return and especially the Lewis to Mercedes move, I’ve had a deep respect for him. It’s only since checking out old F1 season reviews that I’ve really come to appreciate how much of a cool guy he actually is. Such a great backbone, never afraid to tell people where to go. Just a shame it landed his Jordan team in trouble in the grand scheme of things. Cult hero for sure.

As a hard core Damon Hill fan I don't agree RSC was actually the faster driver of those two in that race. Damon was lifting off in some point being in the lead comfortably but was told to pick up some speed by his race engineer and after that they were lapping quite equally. He would easily have won without the safety car caused by Fisichella colliding with Nakano. It was during that safety car period Damon put those famous words to EJ. Even if it hadn't been the team order I doubt RSC would have been able to overtake Damon in these conditions

The '94 3 abreast plus poor martin brundles noggin incident at imola could've ended up worse than it did. It painted a picture of Irvine as a senseless hack; but the truth is it was a perfect storm of a cluster f that Irvine was drawn into and the fact that jos pulled out into his blind spot when he did makes his equally as culpable. Fate was cruel when it placed bernards car where it did- Irvine was trapped having to consider 3 things contemporaneously and when he did make his move it was more gentle than rash...

He broke his legs in a crash at Daytona in the Xfinity Series a day before the Daytona 500, he was forced to relearn how to walk, he returned for the All-Star race, 2 days after the All-Star race his now 5½ year old son Brexton was born and he's now following in his dad's footsteps, made the final 4 in the Chase for the Sprint Cup and became champion after winning the race at Homestead Miami

@@AidanMillward That's a nice story, factually incorrect, but cute. Firstly, the connection with Ferrari was as a engine customer in there 4th year. Jordan had a works engine at the same point in their history. So if this is your criteria, than Jordan had help from Peugeot, Honda and Ford. Sure, Sauber sold to BMW, than repurchased the team after BMW decided to leave. Eddie was only in biz for 14 years, while Sauber is still going. Eddie just wasn't as good as a businessman as Peter Sauber.

Every team on the grid today except Ferrari is a Garageista, not one team make everything in one place except Ferrari Alpine, Mercedes, and Red Bull are the closest thing to not being Garageistas, Mercedes and Alpine aren’t made in Germany or France and until Red Bull Powertrains are up and running there won’t be another legitimate manufacturer in F1.
