Panis' Gamble Pays Off: The 1996 Monaco Grand Prix | That Racing History Podcast Episode 6

Спорт

Ligier must have had a good run in the casino the night before the race, gambling on just filling the tank and only changing tyres. Luckily for them, it rained so hard pre-race that the time limit expired, and they had just enough fuel to finish. This is the story of how they pulled it off.

Obligitory: “yes I know *now* that it was Patrese not Piquet that went into hairpin backwards” post. I also would have loved to have had TV broadcast shots of the Williams going round, but when I tried to upload before, Formula E's automated bot stuck a copyright claim on it at the point of the car exiting the chicane. I guess that means the track is realistic as hell... Ah well, got to drive one of my favourite F1 cars around there twice. Can't complain.

1996 season review VHS was the first season review I ever owned, my dad got it for me, I loved it, watching Damon Hill secure the title in 1996 remains one of my earliest memories of watching the sport so for me that season holds a special place in my heart

I loved this race, except for seeing Damon's car blow up. As it wasn't going to be Damon winning, I was chuffed to see that it was Panis. I always thought that given a better car, he'd have many more wins. Thanks again for the memories and the background making it even better!

The iconic moments of the Monaco circuit, corner by corner: Sainte Devote: No heroics into Sainte Devote, please, we're in amongst the pack and need to stay in one piece Turn 2: Don't go wide or there's a barrier on your right to take you out Exiting turn 3: Watch the bump on the left Mirabeau: Is Rosberg's career over? Hairpin: The slowest corner on the calendar Portier: Substitute driver Button punts Wehrlein onto his side Tunnel: The only part of the course rain doesn't normally affect The chicane after the tunnel: Welp, Hartley's in the wrong place at the wrong time when Leclerc loses his brakes a la Frentzen in 94 and Perez in 11 Tabac: MALDONADO! Swimming Pool: Biff the right of the second part and the outside wall of the following left will take you out La Rascasse: Aarav's Signature Divebomb Maneuver

I always liked Panis. His Crash in Canada 97 came at time when he was building a great momentum and his reputation was going skyward. He never seemed the same after that (Also a big crash in Brazil 98 may have also played a part, not to mention that Prost was dogs dirt that year).

Panis was always a question mark even after his surprise Monaco win. Since only three cars were actually running on the final lap this race was won by whoever lasted it rather than on merit. I mean Schumacher, Hill and Alesi all retired from the lead while most others crashed or had technical issues. Ligier's luck was Sauber's misfortune. While Panis did well one must remember that Monaco - especially in those days with 2 meter wide cars - was an easy place to defend ones lead in should one find oneself leading after the last pit stop. Following Panis's crash his replacement Trulli made quite an impression coming in as a rookie from Minardi no less. In only his 13th F1 start he qualified the Prost-Mugen Honda 3rd and was commandingly leading the Austrian GP the first 37 laps keeping Villeneuve behind him. He retired with 13 laps to go while tailing Villeneuve who went on to win the race. "not to mention that Prost was dogs dirt that year" Sure was, but Trulli did better with it. He both outqualified and outscored Panis in 1998 and 1999. "He never seemed the same after that" He was the same, just very hyped following his lucky Monaco win and a few good showings with the very decent Prost-Mugen Honda - which Trulli actually looked like he could beat Villeneuve with in a straight fight. Panis was like Nico Hulkenberg. Forever a "promising" driver who "will prove himself in the near future". Good and reliable but never referred to as a stellar talent.

GAWD! Aidan started mentioning the driver's names from 1996 and I realized how old I am. Back in the day in the US, ESPN would broadcast these races LIVE! So unlike normal kids, I would be up at six in the morning with a headset on, full volume (duh, a 22 car V-10 standing start, at 20k RPM) to watch these things. And I remember these names (but I can barely tell you any of the guys driving now).

Despite Senna’s aggressive style, he was actually a very charitable person, he told his sister that he wanted to give his earnings back to the younger generations in Brazil, so that they could be afforded the same opportunities he was. He died before they worked out the details, but they did choose the field of education. He also became friend with Alain Prost after he retired. Those two things are both worth a lot in my opinion. That’s why I can’t see him as a bad person by any means, he did a lot of good things.
