Schumacher's Cruise Missile: The Ferrari F2004 | That Racing History Podcast Episode 7

Спорт

The Ferrari F2004 is a much loved car, and dominated the 2004 season to become one of the most successful and iconic cars of the 21st century. It's a car that helped Schumacher on his way to title number 7. A number thought impossible to match, until last year when Lewis Hamilton matched him.
Here's the story of how the car came to be.

Is it just me, or is the F2002 spectacularly underrated? It had a higher win percentage than the F2004, took Schumi to first or second in all fifteen races it entered in 2002, and *even if you don't adjust for the different points system,* Schumi had a higher average points per race in the F2002 than in the F2004. That's just staggering!

Well, the thing about 2002 is that reliability of the Williams was just woeful: you can make a case the F2002 wasn't much faster than the Williams, and was objectively not faster in Qualifying trim. Montoya took most poles that year, for example.

@@RBenjo21 No, Montoya and Michael Schumacher took 7 poles each in 2002, and Barrichello took the other three, so overall Ferrari took 10 poles to Williams' 7. And, while the Williams was often quick in qualifying, in the races the Ferrari was FAR superior. Usually, when Montoya started on pole, the Ferraris would gain the lead within a few laps then just drive away into the distance. Reliability was NOT the reason why Montoya failed to convert any of his poles into wins, he had three mechanical DNFs but he wasn't on course to win any of those races. The only race you could argue Montoya "should" have won is Brazil, which (along with Malaysia, which Ralf won) was the only race where Williams appeared genuinely quicker on race day. In fact, Williams reliability wasn't that bad, Montoya and Ralf had 3 mechanical DNFs each, which was actually pretty normal by the standards of the time. McLaren, for example, had a far worse reliability record, especially on Raikkonen's car (he had 7 mechanical DNFs!) Indeed, had they been as reliable as Williams, McLaren would probably have pushed them hard for 2nd place in the WCC, as their race pace was often as good as, or even better than Williams. The F2002 was just freakishly reliable, well Michael's F2002 at least. In summary, the F2002 dominated because it was by far the quickest car in race trim. The Williams FW24 took nearly as many poles because it worked its tyres hard in qualifying, but that just caused it to suffer tyre wear and go backwards in the race.

I was an ardent McLaren supporter back in 2001-2008. My dad and my little brother were (and still is, in some way) Tifosis. In 2004 it was basically a season of misery for me, having to watch their smug faces as Michael and F2004 schooled the entire field on how to drive and how to make an F1 car. I went to become a part-time Tifosi since 2015 when Seb started his season in Ferrari (part of the reason being 458 Speciale, LaFerrari, stuffs like that. Still a McLaren supporter, though). Took me many, many years of engineering studies to appreciate how good the F2004 was, though. It was only when I started my graduate studies in aerospace engineering and working on aerodynamic optimization as my thesis that I begin to absolutely adore just how nigh-on perfect the F2004 was as the entire package. That optimization does not come easy. Only proper genius can do such optimum package that was consistent race after race with no trouble whatsoever. F1 cars aren't artistically beautiful, and F2004 certainly isn't artistic. It's no Pagani Huayra. But to see how optimized it was and how much of an absolute weapon it really was, that was one heck of a beautiful piece of engineering.

I remember feeling initially dissappointed with the 2004 season. We'd just come from the nailbiting 2003 season where a at times discombobulated Michael had won it partly thanks to a string of strong races, partly because the team and Barrichello backed him up at the critical moments, and also because Mclaren never got their real 2003 car working and split resources trying to get 2 2003 cars working. As a Mclaren and Raikkonen fan, I was looking forward so much to the Woking team getting the concept right this time and go toe to toe with Ferrari at the start, and then also Williams went with their strange (for 2004) car and wondered if they where on to something. I recall being shocked at the practice and qualy times, with just how in front Ferrari where, and how the, rumored, groanings at Mclaren where spot on and that Mp4-19 car was crap. I don't recall hating the F2004, it looked and sounded so right, but I do recall Montoya famously quipping that anybody would be a WDC in those Ferrari cars, I didn't agree at the time and still don't. I agree with the points you brought up but also, would the car be so good for said driver if he wasn't there in the first place to develop it into that car? In a sport where a few tenths is a massive difference, subtle small things like driver preference make so much difference, Michael was the right person at the right time at the right team, and the way Hamilton shaped Mclaren and then Mercedes is as impressive, if not even more. Vettel I think was amazing in his era of blown diffuser cars, and while amazingly quick overall, I suspect he's not as comfortable in current cars, which lead him on a vicious cycle. Again, it's not massive differences, but if he's just a smidge uncomfortable, he's off a tenth or two, and that's it, he's losing places, especially against someone so brutally competitive and talented as Hamilton. We need to try to always enjoy the present, and I'm not trying to be zen here, I'm being realistic, I remember watching Ferrari's dominance and not fully appreciating it, I'm trying not to do the same with Mercedes' current period, even if for this 2021 season my loyalties lie in a more bullish team. That said, while neither Mclaren or Williams got their 2004 concepts to work out of the box (and williams never got their strange nose to work) the hyperquick 2005 Mclaren, as well as most of Newey's Red Bulls, follow some patterns that he tried out and innovated with in those failed 2003 and 2004 cars, so in the end I think he was right. And watching current wide nosed cars (and with the memories of the phallic noses of seasons prior) the 2004's walrus tusked Williams seems to me at least, like the right concept, just with not mature enough technology to back it up.

"and the way Hamilton shaped Mclaren and then Mercedes is as impressive, if not even more" - I completely disagree with that statement. IMHO Schumacher helped to build the Ferrari car, while Hamilton is a good driver that doesn't make mistakes (while not under pressure), who drives one of the most dominating cars ever (think like Williams '93 or '97). So IMHO he is someone like Hill or a much better Villeneuve. Funny thing: the Mercedes team started to develop the car with Brown and Schumacher.

I remember hearing a guy talk about restoring a Trans Am car Dan ran back in the day, a Charger if I remember correctly, and hidden way up under the dash he found two coffee can tins that had been soldered together in the shape of a figure 8. He ran across Dan somewhere and told him he had that old car and his discovery of said cans but he couldn't figure out exactly what it was and why it was there. Dan laughed and explained it was a hidden fuel cell he had to run whenever he put the "special spec" engine in the car to be able to finish the races. LOL! A J Foyt would be another good subject. Ask Andretti about him seeing AJ hop out of an Indy car after turning a blistering qualification lap with a nitrous bottle tucked inside his racing suit. After Andretti realized he couldn't see a race official anywhere close he had to watch the bottle dissappear behind the pit wall as AJ gave him a giant smile and a wink. Andretti said even he had to laugh!

Ferrari seemed a threat all the way up to the end of 2007, Brawn had been forced out by board politics within the parent group the year before so the 2007 was his last car. Once he left the exodus of technical staff began and from 2008 onwards. Eventually after the board trying a few unsuccessful team principles from inside Ferrari they hired an outside to Ferrari in Arrivabene who got them very close. However the untimely death of Marchionne allowed the board to start playing politics again and Ferrari have languished since. The history of team principles is fascinating. Ferrari have often treated the position more as a favour than a serious role.

In some simulations i think in ACC they modded it so the F2004 would use slick tyres and it would be way faster than modern F1 cars. Of course simulation and reality are totally different but it was still an interesting experiment.

If dominance comes from actually being better than the rest, then I'm fine with it because it's down to the rest to catch up. But if dominance comes from cheating or the governing body letting them get away with everything because they think it's good for the sport because it brings in money, then I'm not fine with it because it's not fun for either the other teams or the fans. When it comes to Ferrari and others who themselves have had dominant years, I have no issues because essentially they have just exploited the rules in a way that can't be argued against which happens in all sports and in life itself.

If it were the car Bottas and Hamilton P 1 & 2 Stappy P3. Verstappen won because he can drive the car and Hamilton smashed the entire field in less than half a race distance because he can drive the car. I am a Verstappen supporter but just sayin Latifi aint winning no races even in a Merc
