I've worked with multiple super skinny horses. Through trial and error, this is the best, safest fattening mix: Alfalfa pellets Purina senior pellet Rice bran All measured to her ideal weight according to the bag. Usually fills one large bucket. Wet it all down, give once to twice a day. Alfalfa is okay, but don't free feed as like you said, they'll colic. But you *should* be able to free feed grass hay between grains. Just keep an eye on her, she'll show if she's overeating or not. She doesn't look too desperate which is awesome and should mean she won't overeat. Raising the feeder is a good idea too, makes it easier for them to reach and swallow with such little muscle. Hope this helps! Questions welcome 😊

i grew up around horses, and the way her spine and hip bones stick out makes my heart ache. it takes a special kind of neglect to get a horse looking like that. with that much lack of fat and muscle combined with the leg wound and the cracked overgrown hooves, it's a miracle that she can even stand or walk straight. she has no reason to trust humans, and yet she doesn't mind ben patting her or lifting her feet or talking loudly next to her, in fact she actually seems to enjoy the company. says a lot about both ben and arthur that she seems comfortable with him despite really having no reason to trust him after what she's been through. i'm really excited to watch her fatten up and get some muscle back, she is a good lady that deserves all the grass and hay and loving pets.

My one and only horse was a rescue from Hurricane Katrina. Her name was Bella, she was about 6-8 years old when she was found(early 2006). She was very malnourished and skittish when the rescue team found her all alone on someone's property. It was presumed she'd either been boarded there by someone, or the owners of the property she was found on never claimed her. She lived with my great aunt and her many animals as well as my aunt's horse Ninja. Unfortunately she died young in 2015 from a bacterial infection.

That poor horse is in such bad condition. I'm glad you have a blanket for her, a clean shelter, a toy for some mental engagement and a salt block. If she starts eating the salt block (actually breaking off chucks), you might want to limit her access to it, since she may be salt-starved. Limiting it to approx. 2 ounces a day for about the first week or so is a safe way to start before you begin offering it as a free choice. Along with finding a good farrier, be sure to have her dewormed, vitamin boosted, vaccinated and get her teeth checked (and floated, if necessary). Be sure to keep any wounds clean and dressed since her body will need extra time and help to heal and fight off infections. I have no doubt she's in good hands, and that you're looking into all of this already. Keep up the great work, Ben! Looking forward to seeing her progress. Horses are awesome creatures. They are the unsung heroes of humanity.

I just do not have the capacity or money in my life to make a good home for a creature that big, and I likely never will. To care for an animal like that is a massive amount of work, especially if you want them to have a better life than in the wild. Wild animals do not live well, they just live free. I don't know why more people do not realize this.

Thank you Uncle Ben for all you do. You really are making a difference. Edit: I am curious to find out what breed Arthur is

Congratulations on Arthur 😂 also for a sick horse like that, you shouldn’t give her too much protein because she might get diarrhea, that’s what happened with my horse, and I recommend piranha zero bite fly spray, also you can go behind her, just let her know you aren’t trying to hurt her, like when I go behind my horse I put my hand on her hip to let her know, that will probably be good enough, it really depends on how much she trusts you. Another recommendation, use sand instead of hay, it’s a lot easier to clean up and you don’t have to change it out very often. Also we missed tank, glad he’s back ❤❤❤

If you mean normal sand then that isn't the greatest to keep horses on. A rough sand paddock is fine, sure, but sandy soil/sand that can coat feed is not ideal. But I might've misinterpreted you! If anyone is interested why: it accumulates in the stomach/intestines and creates blockages, also known as sand colic. That's why people don't want horses on sandy soil. If you have sandy soil in your pasture you can give your horse psyllium seeds proactively. It helps the sand leave the body because of how sticky it gets. Make sure to give the right amount though. Where I'm from it's more common to use stable pellets (usually you soak them and then spread it out, really easy to keep clean), cutter shavings (depends on the wood type), peat (not a fav of mine, very dusty and not good for lungs) or corn straw. I definitely prefer stable pellets but it can be a bit pricey. Stables (training/competitive) I've been to in other european countries have used mixtures of peat and straw. I think mostly because peat is great for composting so it's easier for farmers to take the waste.

small note about riding her! make sure you follow the 20% weight limit rule! it can be highly damaging to ride a horse who you’re too large for. it’s hard to tell if she’s big enough to be ridden yet as she’s so skinny. hopefully she’ll be able to hold you when she’s put on some pounds!

Even when she does get to her healthy, average weight, I still think he will be too big to ride her. Someone else could tho~ I also just hope that they know her history. If she has been ridden before and/or when the last time she was ridden.

I've been around horses my entire life and seeing her got me close to tearing up. I am glad she found her way to Uncle Dad Ben to have a better life from now on. If you want her to gain weight quickly some oats every day, additional to the hay and grass works wonders! (maybe spice it up and just take some oat based protein powder hehe (don't)) also idk how it is in america and you probably know already, but maybe be a bit careful with letting her grass freely in the summer! In europe our horses can get colic from just a few hours of access to the green grass

  • @leannamarz8564
