Also, I totally agree with your philosophy surrounding the cost of patterns. I don't think typically how established the designer is has much to do with the cost - like you said, patterns with more features, sizes, etc are worth more and the designer deserves more compensation for the extra work to give a pattern all those options.

I haven’t noticed that patterns by less established designers are lower in price - in fact, I have noticed the reverse and often thought they should be more expensive! Hunter hammerson wrote a really interesting post about pricing as a very established designer as well, which went into all the costs and overheads, taxes when it’s your full-time gig. I think it’s good for the price to reflect the work that went into the pattern - for example, a quick vanilla sock pattern vs ‘my first socks’ vanilla sock pattern which might come complete with tutorials and hand holding in the pattern, different needle options etc. As for yarn shop suggestions - the fibre co is a fantastic place for natural yarns and fibres, they have beautiful blends and I love them and if I was rich I would shop with them all the time! I particularly love their newish sock yarn Amble, which is a mixture of merino, alpaca and recycled nylon, and made Superwash in an eco-friendly way. Their yarns are just stunning! Bluebell yarns are a Uk hand dyer working exclusively (I think) with non-Superwash and often breed-specific yarns. And blacker yarns are another company working with breed-specific, non-Superwash etc yarns. Their prices are a bit cheaper than the fibre co too, I think (although their yarns tend towards the rustic).

I've enjoyed your episodes since day 1. I believe this was the best so far. It's physically challenging for me to sit still for an hour or longer but before I knew it, the podcast was over, my scarf was many rows longer (no mistakes in the lace section) and bonus, no pain to speak of. Fantastic 👍 Your energy is very contagious. I don't personally know anyone who knits or crochets so I live vicariously with my crafty KZread friends...of which I count you one. Your talent is so fun, be proud.

Hi Laura! Airplane, lawn mower, tractor... I love it hahaha! You are so much fun to watch! Your new kids sweater design is absolutely fabulous, very creative! Would be lovely in adult sizes too... It reminded me of water falling from a waterfall... maybe make the body in blue-green-grey colours and call it "Niagara Falls Sweater", or refer to a waterfall in the UK? :-) But I also agree with some comments below that a galaxy theme fits very well too. For the sweater for your mom, it is beautiful! Would you not already start over now and make sure the neck is wide enough, before you put all your energy in finishing and blocking the yoke? I know, frogging is terrible, but if it results in a perfect fit in the end, it will be worth it for your mom! Looking forward to the next video!

I always have so many things I want to comment on with your podcast! First off, loved it, loved everything you've been making. It's always such a pleasure to hear you talk about your knitting. I also love longer episodes, I just watch them on and off throughout the day. The friday slipover looks so good on you! I'm making one myself currently and I also see myself pairing it with a white tee. And the watg kinda magic socks are so fun! I'm sure some people commented on it already, but they give you stripes after the cuff and if your gauge is right every stripe is one full round long, so if its longer or shorter you should change your needles. It's not an exact thing, apparently, but it's a good way to check and that way you don't need to swatch. Your cabled socks are so pretty! I'm not usually a fan of cables, but they're so dainty and elegant! I'm excited to see how they turn out. Happy knitting!

Oooh that you for letting me know!! I’m definitely a little less intimidated by them now!!! And I have a love hate relationship with cables, I do find they slow me down but these are just two stitches so you don’t even need a cable needle!!! Looking forward to working on them again when the lovely Anna pattern is finished! X

I love your outfit in this video! I think you’ve inspired me to knit another Friday slipover in a grey colour to recreate this outfit. You also got me thinking about how patterns are priced, and I feel like many Scandinavian designers have quite affordable patterns because a few reasons, perhaps because the language is quite plain, i.e. quite short instructions , not ‘hand-holdy’ or as detailed as some other independent designers. It could also be, as you mentioned, because of how many of the styles that these larger designers create are very minimalist. It gave me a lot to think about when I go to purchase patterns from smaller designers and get put off the pattern because of the price.

I have just a copy of 52 weeks of socks. Really lovely book. May not have enough feet for all the socks I want to make. Have also got 52 weeks of shawls, some more complex than others ( and a much pricier book). I do wish the lower end of the yarn market would do a plain 4 ply for socks and minis for cuffs and toes. I cannot justify £7 or £8 for a ball of yarn for socks.

The new jumper design is beautiful, can't wait to knit it when you release it! In terms of natural/local/non SW yarns, I would recommend Garthenor, Marina Skua, Woolly Mammoth Fibre Co, and John Arbon. Some yarn shops websites also have a search function which includes a UK/local filter! Other yarns that I love that are available in the UK are Istex (although hard to get hold of atm), De Rerum Natura, and Biches & Buches. Hope that helps! I always love your podcasts, it's been so interesting to learn about the design process, and your thoughts and insights of things is so inspiring! Thank you :)

Pressed enter before I could finish.... I agree about the price of patterns, the more content & detail should have a bigger price tag. I like to buy designs that appeal to me rather than just because of the designer. However, I have bought patterns from well known designers, and have the peace of mind knowing how their patterns are written. I fell in love with a beautiful child's jumper pattern from a new designer, bought the pattern, even though it was much more expensive than well established designers, only to find it riddled with mistakes, the fit was wrong, definitely not tech edited. I ended up drawing on my own expertise to knit the jumper. I basically paid for a nice photo. These days I do check the ravelry projects of the design and sift through the comments before purchasing a pattern.

The child's sweater you are designing made me think of architecture. The name could be "Araeosystyle", which is an architectural term applied to a colonnade, in which the intercolumniation is alternately wide and narrow, which is is happening as you are adding increases. I had to look up the term because I'm not an architect, but knew there was a name for how I see the formation of the yoke. I hope this makes sense to you.

Well not deliberately 😣 i have thought i knew better too many times to find out…nope 🙈 stick to the pattern 🤣🤣. When it comes to buying patterns i don’t really think about the price. I just look for a pattern that floats my boat and hope i enjoy knitting it. There’s only one jumper pattern that i bought recently that i can’t make head nor tail of….i won’t name it here…which is more than likely down to me than the designer. 😖. Xxx

For the person looking for local and ethical yarns in the UK, there's a lovely shop up here in North West England called Northern Yarn. They specialise in sourcing local and ethically produced yarns. Highly recommend a visit to the bricks and mortar shop, however they also have a website. Thanks for making your podcasts, they are really relaxing and it always feels like being with a friend :)

Another wonderful episode! I haven't noticed drastic differences in prices between designers. Like you've said, if its an intricate design than the cost is more. For your new sweater design, some names could be "Sunbeam sweater", or "On the Horizon". It reminds me of streams of light. Just wanted to say how very talented and amazing you are! So glad you decided to take the plunge and podcast :)

I absolutely love the new sweater design - I've never actually made a sweater before, but this sure makes me want to try! First to things I thought of when I saw the pattern were peppermint taffy (which is admittedly very color-dependent) and god rays

Hello, Laura! I'm really excited to see your new little sweater design! I think it would really suit my grandson because he is such a live wire - and as soon as I saw it, the first word that came into my head was "Elektrichka"! Continuing the theme of using potentially unpronounceable foreign words for your pattern names (lol), it's "el-ek-TREEch-ker" - the colloquial word for a small suburban train that runs around and in and out of any big Russian city... The red and white are like the sparks that fly up from the tracks as they rush about - remind you of any certain small people?! I also want to get straight on to your pattern as soon as you can publish it because I have never made a top-down sweater at all, let alone with a colourwork yoke... I am finding that toddler knitting teaches me a lot about adult garment construction cheaply and in double-quick time - somehow the mistakes along my learning curve don't seem so bad! So I'm interested to know how you make sure that the neckline will go over the toddler's head and sticky-out ears without too much screaming? Not all are such dinky little fairies as your darling daughter - or at least, ours isn't! Thanks again for you fantastic podcast!

Thank you Karen for your fabulous comment and suggestion! So the way I combat the neckline problem as though my daughter is dinky, she has a big head, is to use a tubular cast on as it super super stretchy and lovely looking. It’s usually the cast on method that causes the trouble so I’m confident my design will be functional and hopefully my testers will agree! X

Hi Laura, really enjoyed your episode today. Your excitement and enthusiasm is infectious. I am a fellow West Midlander but have lived in Essex for a long time now ( kept the accent though!) So interesting what you were saying about your maths confidence because knitting involves so much number work but we don't think of it as maths ! I had a financial analyst friend who would look on CV's of prospective candidates to see if knitting was in their hobbies and if it was they got shortlisted!!

On terms of yarns for the person moving to the UK. Woolly Mammoth Fibre Co. is my suggestion. Think her yarns really fit the brief. Lovely podcast too. X

As you say the cardi is stunning and you’re right to be proud and the cami is lovely- just part of the learning journey I guess. My knitting pickle is stepping out of my comfort zone this week - trying tubular cast on 😬. Want to do an Ankers pattern kal that thisnannyknits/fibrebound are running. Bit late starting as too much life stuff getting in way of knitting 😕 xx

Hello!! Love watching your podcast. I am knitting a vest using the Smith and Jamison wool in 5 colours (same colors as your sweater) . The Machrihanish by Kate Davies. It is colour work all the way. What I like about the wool is what a lightweight fabric it produces.

I love the look of the Birkin. So pretty. I have seen some on ravelry where the depth of the colourwork seems a bit too deep before the sleeve split. I need to investigate that further. Looking forward to seeing yours.
