"The Kingston Trio: Then & Now" (mini documentary) Director: Chip Miller

Музыка

This mini documentary video is the prototype for a feature-length documentary celebrating the 60-year musical legacy of The Kingston Trio. It also was a prelude to the 2016 PBS Television Live Concert Special, "The Kingston Trio Celebration" - an all-star concert filmed at the Avalon Hollywood Theater (formerly the legendary Hollywood Palace). The historic event celebrated the legacy of The Kingston Trio. Along with the 2003-2017 Kingston Trio (Bill Zorn, George Grove & Rick Dougherty), the concert featured an historic last performance by the legendary late Bob Shane, founder of the original Trio with Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard, then John Stewart, who replaced Guard.
For ten years, the Trio reigned and ruled the charts. At Capitol Records, the top selling artists of all time, were The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, and...The Kingston Trio.
The PBS concert was directed by Chip Miller who also co-produced with Terrel Cass. Starring in the final show, beside The Kingston Trio and Bob Shane, are Al Jardine of The Beach Boys, Timothy B. Schmit of The Eagles, Barry "Eve of Destruction" McGuire of The New Christy Minstrels, the late Trini Lopez, The Limeliters, Henry Diltz (Modern Folk Quartet), Josh Reynolds (son of the Trio's late Nick Reynolds), Sana Christian, Shari Belafonte (daughter of Harry), and long-time Trio bassist, Paul Gabrielson. The concert was line produced by Travis Miller; produced by Terrel Cass & Chip Miller; executive produced by George Jensen & Barry Speyers, associate produced by Wood Allen. Bryan Greenberg was the DP/main camera, and Cameron Cannon and video pioneer Bill Dear were key camera operators. Miller edited at DCAM Studios Post facility. John Wroble mixed final sound, with Chip Miller and Bill Zorn overseeing the mix.
In 2018, a DVD and CD soundtrack was released is still available from Desert C.A.M. Studios. This promotional mini-documentary appears on the DVD as a bonus. The DVD content is also available worldwide on all major streaming platforms through MVD Distributors.
The live concert footage used in this doc video, was from a live concert shoot in Borrego Springs at the Dreamweaver Amphitheater that Chip Miller also directed; as well as excerpts from an interview with Bob Shane by San Francisco KDFC On-Air Radio Personality Ray White; and from five music videos that Bob and the Trio performed at the Desert C.A.M. Studios green screen stage. Sadly, Bob Shane and Trini Lopez passed away in 2020 and Ray White passed away in 2021.
This is a presentation of Desert C.A.M. Studios.

I’m 82 and grew up with the original Trio. Started playing a Martin guitar because of them. Our group always led off with Greenback Dollar. Still love it. Rest in peace boys. You were the best.

I saw the Trio in the early 90's with Bob, Nick, and George Grove. One of my favorite concerts. Bob was having a bad string day; he must have snapped half a dozen guitar strings during the performance. He restrung his own guitar every time, without breaking the performance. He got increasingly theatrical about it as the show went on, turning what could have been a disaster into an extra bit of comedy. What a pro!

I saw Bob, Nick and George twice at the Riverside Auditorium in Riverside, Calif. I'm so thankful for that i cried throughout, both times. Lots of memories of growing up from 5 years old to now, 67 years old. When we lost Bob this year I felt like a cousin had died. They will all be in my heart always.

Thank you for this. I live in Brisbane, Australia and am a full-time singer/guitarist. The Kingston Trio were a huge influence on me. ‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone’ was the first song I sang in a talent quest. ‘Bad Man’s Blunder’ was the first song I sang for my singing teacher! I listen to them regularly to this day. When each of the original four passed on, I felt a sad loss.

In the last verse of my ballad "Where Have All the Songmen Gone?" I wrote " Dave and Bob, Nick and John, with the Trio they did sing. The melodies that poured forth from them, the laughter they did bring. And I'm sure they joined Steve and John, and Harry in their song. And if you listen closely, you'll hear Jim now sing along. " The final chorus follows, "Where have All the songmen gone? The melodies we love to hear. Their power was a six string guitar, their voices soft and clear. They taught us about truth and life. They taught us about love and war. Where have all the songmen gone? Won't they sing anymore. Where have all the songmen gone? Won't they sing anymore."

My sad duty. I am unexpectedly the last director to film Bob's final interview for a mini-Kingston Trio documentary shown here, and three PBS concert specials, including his last live stage performance. The specials all aired from 2015 to 2019, and our special live holiday concert shot in Tulsa, OK premiered in 2018 and airs annually as a Christmas program. Now in 2021 all three concerts are available in DVD and on all worldwide streaming platforms. It was a true honor to work with and get to know Bob. All the best, Chris. Cheers, Chip

@@aledakivett9255 oh, I’ve seen the Tijuana Jail video hundreds of times! There’s also a great version of I’m Going Home, but that’s about it in terms of their live performances on video. I’ve searched relentlessly over the years to find these on KZread (especially colorized performances), and I’ve had next to no luck finding such videos. At one point, there was a live version of Colours (in color) on the platform, but it has long since been taken down. It’s a shame that there’s so little content around - it’s as if they’ve been forgotten, and the lack of videos will only contribute to society forgetting this group of wonderful men sooner than I wish to see them go.
