The karelianism trail: Akseli Gallen Kallela

Музыка

Karelianism was a 19th-century cultural phenomenon which influences many art fields in Finland. It took its inspiration from the Kalevala and Karelia. Karelianism started in Kuhmo. The first Karelian was the artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela. He came to Kuhmo in the summer of 1890 for a wedding and art working trip. Here in the village of Rimpi, he found Väinämöinen as his model, Eljas Ahtonen, better known as Rimmin Uljaska. Karelians Louis Sparre, Emil Wikström, Yrjö Blomstedt, Victor Sucksdorff and Samuli Paulaharju have also visited Rimpi village. Renne Haverinen, a crofter from Kuhmo, was a guide of several Karelians on their trips to Karelia.
