The price of honor. The power of friendship. THE KARATE KID, Part II. Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita re-create the roles that brought them international acclaim in The Karate Kid. Karate student, Daniel Larusso (Macchio), accompanies his wise and whimsical teacher, Mr. Miyagi (Morita), to his ancestral home in Okinawa. For the boy, it's a journey to an exotic new world offering new clues to his mentor's secret past. For Miyagi, it's an opportunity to see his father one last time and tore kindle a romance with his childhood sweetheart (Nobu McCarthy). But Miyagi's return also re-ignites a bitter feud with long-time enemy, Sato (Danny Kamekona) - a feud that involves young Daniel in a brilliant collision of cultures and combat. Now, far away from the tournaments, the cheering crowds and the safety of home, Daniel will face his greatest challenge ever when teacher becomes student and the price of honor is life itself.

I met Ralph Macchio at a comic-con recently and was able to ask him about this scene, if it was filmed on location or in studio. He told me it was indeed filmed on location in Hawaii, they had massive rain machines and it was freezing cold out. He also said that for some of the intense winds, in the scene, they flew a helicopter just over top of them (something that you probably couldn't get away with today 😅). So awesome.

Not just that, but it makes it crystal clear that Mr. Miyagi never WANTED to fight Sato in the first place because he never viewed Sato as anything other than his old friend. He acknowledges that Sato is misguided, but he never gives up on his friend. What a man, Mr. Miyagi, am I right?

The problem is the uncle saw the error of his ways and redemption, and the nephew grew up trying to be what his uncle wanted. He did it to gain the approval and respect of a man he respected. When the uncle saw his error and redemption, the nephew saw it as betrayal. How could this man, who had raised him to be this way, that he had looked up to, emulated, and tried to gain that acknowledgement change, and suddenly he was cast aside, seen as lesser, that the actions he had done at the approval of the uncle were no longer approved? While it doesn't excuse the nephews behavior in the grand scheme of humanity, much of the blame is still laid on the uncle, and when the uncle saw his errors and redemption, didn't take blame and sit the nephew down and tell him he had to change, that he had been wrong, and taught him wrong, and that he would help show him the proper way to be a good man and a good human being, but instead cast him aside for him being exactly what he taught him to be.

You have to say this for Sato. When Miyagi raised his hand and Sato thought it was to finally kill him, the old man didn't blink. He was going to look Miyagi right in the eye as he was killed. Not even a flinch. What I love most about this scene is it shows what matters most for being a true martial artist. It is not being the strongest or most skilled. It is about using what you have learned to conquer fear and danger itself. What Daniel lacked in strength and skill he made up for in sheer will, determination and selflessness. If that's the case, then he's wrongfully blaming himself. Sato's anger and hate were sincere, given that he honored the ice-break bet along with giving the villagers ownership of the village in exchange for Mr. Miyagi fighting him, "small price" or not. Chozen was just plain bad news and was just using Sato's emotions as an excuse to throw punches. Otherwise, he would've also honored the ice-break bet, along with not ripping off the villagers with their crops. He even claimed to have been 'dishonored' because of Daniel. @vinceventresca6763

Both comments are hysterical, but I believe that Mr. Miyagi was able to tap into something that Sato couldn’t simply because of how they lived: after the supposed betrayal when they were younger and still friends, Sato trained to fight Miyagi, where Miyagi spent that same time training NOT to fight. So, when the time came to take his skills to yet another level (in this case to rescue Sato), Mr. Miyagi was able to because he was doing it for the correct reasons. I think that’s why Miyagi initially looked so exhausted when he broke the beam; the place he went to was beyond just the physical realm, even if it was just for a moment, but it drained him just the same.
“A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but once.” - William Shakespeare
Sato didn't really want to fight Miyagi, but he had to do it to defend his honour, which in Okinawa is something that's even more precious than living. However, when he sees Miyagi saving his life and seeing also his protege doing the same with Yuna, he realises that he was already dishonoring himself in trying to force himself and Miyagi doing something they didn't want to do

Id say more like Cowards at the time. Sato was a good man who lost his way and the true meaning of what he was taught. Miyagi's act restored it all for him. If he was truly bitter and inconsolable, then not even saving his life would change him, rather look at it as another opportunity to kill Miyagi. Then it woulda been cowardice the whole way. I would agree that Chozen couldve been considered a coward at the time because of how he was taught and knew little about true good.@@danaabel1049

Yeah no doubt, that girl climbed up there and held the f-ing line, despite rain and strong winds, ringing that bell for as long as she could. If anyone showed spirit it was her.
Satos voice changes from hateful beast to normal after he gets saved.
Still love this movie
Mr Miyagi was a good dude
Imagine if 10 minutes later, Chozen came back with like 5 people he just saved.

Lol that would’ve been nice.
My man is lying on his back with 700 lb rafter on his chest and shouting insults that sound like he's in a recording studio.
lol CAHWARD the way Sato says it haha
"Now, to you, I AM dead!"
Sato realize Miyagi save his life for this
Love how they leave the girl ringing the bell outside... 🤣

Lol I just realized that when I watched this clip. Then they all stood there and watched Daniel struggle to save her.

Kind of weird that before the real heavy stuff started to come down, no one even wondered, “hey did anyone get that one girl in the tower?” Or she didn’t think to come down when things really picked up?

The little girl save's his business in the future, like what ukia say put good into the world, you will be rewarded
Chozen is going to regret it, he will be Daniel instigator
Thanks a lot Uncle Sato, you've been teaching me.this hate way my whole life, now you condemn me for it -Chozen

That's most likely why Sato ends up forgiving Chozen and spends the rest of his life correcting his mistake.
4:08 So... any of you other able bodied men want to go out and help get the kid? No? (Petty as it was, at least Chozen had a reason.)

Guy #2: But I got new shoes on! Guy #4: Eh, I'm kinda settled in and comfortable. Farnsworth: I'm already in my pajamas. Her freaking parents: Meh, never really liked her, she was bit of a smart ass.
It's cheesy. But it's sooo good. I don't know, Karate Kid 2 has a special place for me. Even though watching it as an adult there are so many things that are weird. How everyone is speaking English to each other instead of Japanese... But that's the 80s for you.
I hope that the actor who played Sato is being prayed for on Planet Two!
It would have been funny if Sato picked up the girl, then kicked Daniel down in the mud, ran back into the house and said "look at me, I'm a hero!"
Sato was my Favourite character I even named my English Bullterrier after him😂
2:49 Miyagi thinking "Do I REALLY need to save him?"
30 years from then, this scene, that girl that is hitting the bell, that gets stuck up there, is the same girl that saves daniels car dealership 30 years later haha, small world :p
The joy of letting go of so much hate.
A bolt of lightning at the end would have been perfect.
Do Chozen call that not being a coward by not also helping the little girl?!
Would be cool if Dan himself did something similar for Chozen during Cobra Kai.
That storm was really bad, must have been a full blown hurricane.
As a kid, i thought Mr Miyagi was gonna jam it further into his chest for continuing to talk shit when they came to save him lol
このシーンでものすごく感動したもんです。涙なくしては見れない😭
*karate chops the board in half* *Chozen splits in half*
0:49-0:52 Hurricane Ian in a nutshell.
If Pat Morita would've been alive for Cobra Kai, it would've had to been shown on the big screen
