Can’t say Dre is a better fighter, but Cheng already lost when he first hesitated. I think we can only tell who is better when they are both 100% without injury. But still it’s all part of the game. Dre still manage to win this flight through incredible toughness. Great scene!

Cheng is definitely better than Dre. See tournament style is different. If they were doing in streets Cheng would’ve easily won. If he knocks Dre down once he can demolish him. If he falls he can get back up with agility. Tournament forced Cheng to not attack so there was nothing he could do. Cheng is definitely better fighter. He managed to defend that Mohawk guy pretty decent and his rule is no mercy. Dre wouldn’t be able to put up with that. Plus Dre is main character so he had to win. He was also losing balance straight from the start In the match.

This was a genius re-make. They wanted to target China and included Jaden and hoped it would get global exposure. The script is just a translated version basically. Not a great movie but what a way to make money

Dre's former enemies are Cheng, Liang, and Zhuang but Cheng, Liang, and Zhuang are formerly friends with Master Li and they quit and joined Mr. Han

Cheng is beating tf outta Hawk. Hawk was extremely cocky like Wu Ping and Cheng took advantage of that quite easily. Hawk is fast, but Cheng is faster and more aggressive. Robby can squeak out a win if it’s the Cobra Kai Robby. Miyagi Do Robby would lose. Miyagi Do Robby always tried to keep his emotions in check when fighting but ofc gets angry. Cobra Kai Robby is aggressive asf. Cheng would most likely lose to Miguel. Miguel is the only fighter that’s a perfect blend of aggressive, defence, and power. He was the first to be technically trained by Johnny and Danny.

So I've seen a few comments calling here that Dre is clearly the worse fighter in this situation. As a child I agreed but re-watching this fight, I wouldn't nessicarily agree. Context is important here, we're watching a tournament setting, where both martial artists are approaching the situation from a different angle from a street fight/fight to the death. In a tournament setting you have a certain level of expectations for how things will generally be run. This informs your decision making and attack patterns, as well as defensive ones, to be a little less safe as scoring a point on your opponent is the objective and thus you're expecting specific kinds of attacks (generally stuff to knock you off balance for an easy finish) and not things that will leave serious damage or cause serious pain (kicks to the groin or the kick to Dre's leg for example). We don't know which of them would actually do better at a street fight as we don't see them have one, we see them having a round of tournament style sparring with an aggressive debilitating attack made. Understanding the context of their fight is important. Dre does get knocked off balance here a lot but we also do not know how well he handles that situation as he is allowed to get back up, and we do not see how Cheng fairs in that position. Though, if we are to make some assumptions: Dre was taught defensive skills as his core framework, Cheng is taught offensive. That doesn't mean either seriously lacks in either area but it's a style of their art passed onto them via their masters. In the deleted fight scene between their masters, Myagi though on the backfoot most of the fight ultimately does win as his defensive skills allows him to survive and redirect the onslaught and take control of the fight at key moments. We see a sort of mirror here in Dre vs Cheng which makes sense as their masters taught their styles to their pupils. Dre ends up on the back foot early and while he leads in points at a point, it's clear that this is because he's playing to his master's general style. Similar to Myagi, while initially he ends up on the back foot, when he gains control of the match he maintains it until the social contract is bent a little for Cheng's master's desire to see Dre and thus Myagi's teachings fall. Mind this is a tournament and the move isn't illegal, so it's not wrong or even dirty fighting, it's technically good strategy, but also arguably poor sportsmanship. In a street fight without the guidance of his coach to do so I doubt Cheng would pull said move as well due to inexperience and hesitation, which we see he is prone to on occasion. If we take this data, the street fight between these two would have been likely frenetic and probably would have ended in a close win by Dre or a tie owing to Dre's lack of experience. Like most fights in media, this fight is a fight based on ideals, or in this case, two styles of kung fu, with different spiritual principles, going head to head. The movie is making a statement that Cheng's master is factually wrong, while his style of kung fu is powerful and effective, what it teaches it's students is not a good spiritual message which Myagi's style does. While good morals don't win fights in real life, this movie isn't real life, and said morals will carry through to everything else in life, reinforcing the saying of "Kung Fu is in everything" (might be misquoted somewhat) that Myagi teaches. His style is also equally effective, as demonstrated in the movie. We have to remember that while this movie tries to be semi-realistic in some cases, in others it isn't at all. Thus conventional rules of combat, especially between two inexperienced children in a street fight, aren't going to be the same either. In conclusion, Dre here isn't as bad as some people would portray, but he is also not perfect, if he were his set would have been a total domination obviously and that wouldn't make for a great final fight in a martial arts movie. A street fight is different from a tournament fight. Victory isn't nessicarily plot armor here but a statement by the creators of the film, like most fight scenes. Karate Kid writers were smart to use exposition (& Dre's funny demo) to show that Dre already had some self-defense training. Under the tutelage of a great "sensei," Dre's believable as a champion of an Asian-created martial art.
