The Jolly boys head out ferreting to an ancient hedgerow on an industrial scale

Спорт

Knowing your quarry’s behaviour always brings home more bunnies, and the stop-nets through the hedge between warrens caught out every rabbit that tried to escape. We worked systematically and, after back-filling the holes we had dug, we started on the adjacent hedge. This offered fewer warrens, but as my dog, Bella, was now replacing the tired Joe, her mark was born to be rewarded.
The rabbits in this trackside hedgeline had different ideas. Bolting like thunder, they were almost intent on running around rather than straight down the hedge into our nets. Out came the spades again, but this time the digs were a little deeper. I decided to enter more ferrets to force the rabbits’ hand, and this tactic worked a treat.
Once above, Bella herded them into the nets, but not before demonstrating how strong her drive is. One rabbit decided to run around the inside of the hedge, but Bella followed it, not around the hedge on the nice short grass, but directly through it among the brash and brush. To her credit, she caught her rabbit and almost winked as she relinquished her prize.
We ended the day with more than 20 rabbits. Not the greatest bag but I am confident we left nothing behind to damage the fields. Out of all of those rabbits, more than half were buck rabbits, which is an effective way of breaking the rabbits’ breeding cycle.

Love how the dog seems to hear the rabbit breaking ground, looking that way when he takes off running... I have to wonder if the ferret ever breaks out right under a dog, gets grabbed just for a second! Of course ferrets smell rank enough even HUMANS can tell what they are...

Cool top man and just wondering if its just my area or not but we still have mixxy down here in Bedfordshire bad its been here now since September time so its been months nearly wiped all rabbits not many left atall so I've only been out ferreting 4 times this winter season ferreting and lamping twice maybe 3 times because bunny numbers are so bad never seen it like it is this bad before

+motomeady hunting nd motocross might be something more than mixy m8, been going to caithness since 1985 every winter, sometimes twice, never seen the rabbit stocks so low, last cple of years, they reckon there is a virus stopping them breeding, if its just mixy they bounce back no prob.

  • @Sneaky-Snek

the ferrets are natural predators, they dont run like the rabbits do, so the dog has a completely different idea of what they are. and animals sight is faaaaaaar better than humans, and the probably live together and know each other
