Lets be honest though when it comes to comic book rogues Batman has the best ones, i don't think Batman would have become as popular as he has without his villains. Look at Adam West Batman, the villains were the scene stealers most of the time, look at Burton's films and again the villains are the best parts. A hero is only as good as his villain and that's why Batman is so fucking huge and popular, even an announcement of the villain for the new Batman film is met with hyped and endless talks something what even Spidey's rogues don't get (all though Spidey does have an amazing list of villains and is 2nd to Bats villain wise). Ask a regular joe who doesn't follow comic books and i bet most could name Joker, Two Face, The Riddler, Catwoman, Mr Freeze and The Penguin what's actually a lot to name, even Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Bane and Harley may get a lot of mentions as well.

The one thing I’ll say is that I don’t agree with the “Batman is a job” idea, or that Joker initially wants to kill Batman only to change his mind. When the Joker says “if you’re good at something never do it for free” I don’t think he’s being remotely honest. I think he’s just telling the other criminals what they need to hear to think he’s on their level.

@@charlespuruncajas9663 Phoenix's Joker's origin is as definite as you can get, there's little unreliability in his narration as the movie goes out of its way to separate Arthur's hallucination with reality such as when Arthur dreams he becomes a successful stand up comedian and dates the neighbour, but in the next scene we saw that it was clearly all in his head. Also in that story, without a definite origin the theme of the story doesn't work - ie Arthur has to be from a neglected class of society for the social commentary of the movie to get the audience to think about how unequal and unfair today's society is. This is in direct contrast to Ledger's Joker, where his motives and action has almost no direct link to his past. Was Ledger Joker abused by his father as a child? Maybe, maybe not. Did he have a wife whom left him? Maybe, maybe not. But none of it matters as it doesn't influence his actions in current. Whereas for Phoneix's Joker, ALL his actions was BECAUSE of the abuse he gets as a neglect class in society or in his family - if social security didn't get defunded Arthur might still be getting his medicine, if the society took care of the poor then Arthur wouldn't be taking care of his mentally ill mother by himself which puts a huge strain on his mental condition, if his co-workers weren't such back-stabbing douche he wouldn't do what he did etc. The two versions of Joker is actually at the exact opposite spectrum on the scale.

My personal spin on the Joker soldier theory is that he was specifically an ex-Green Beret. The Green Berets or Army Special Forces aren’t exactly like most other commando/special operations units, their primary job isn’t fighting, but unconventional warfare. For Green Berets unconventional warfare primarily focuses on liasing, recruiting, and training indigenous forces to conduct asymmetrical warfare behind enemy lines. What is the jokers organization if not a indigenous forces fighting a guerrilla war against the Gotham police? The joker is the movie needs more than just weapons training, he needed a skill set that would allow him to create an effective militant network in hostile territory, and being an ex-Army Special Forces soldier would provide him with exactly that sort of training.

I have a theory that Heath Ledgers joker instead of being ex-military he had heavy influence from the arts (drama/acting). He seems to have to prep himself for situations like an actor would. Giving himself different stories therefore adopting a different personality. Even when Batman is about to hit him he has to pep himself up "I want you to do it. I want you to hit me". The guy even wears clown makeup.

One of the coolest things about Nolan's Joker is that you can use your imagination with his origin and come up with your own conclusions. I enjoyed your point of view! I think the same thing! I want to believe that The Joker is ex CIA. He was on an under cover mission with a group of "soldiers" where he was the lead tactician giving out commands for the mission. The mission went south and the truck load of soldiers were blown up. CIA wanted to keep in quiet but the Joker wanted to tell the soldier's families. The CIA told him if he can not keep his mouth shut, then they will help him keep it wide open! 🃏 The CIA cut the Joker's mouth and placed him in Arkham, so no one would believe him, where he had to become "The Joker" in order to survive the crazies in Arkham. He breaks out of Arkham and starts ripping off Mob dealers in Gotham. This explains the lack of finger prints, the proficiency of firearms, weapons and explosives, interrogation skills, tactical knowledge on how to rob a bank and the ability to infratrate a firing squad and prisoner escort convoy. I believe the movie drops hints and we have to be the detectives to put them all together. What are your thoughts?

I think it's refreshing to not have another origin story. It also adds fear to the Joker to not know his origin. I'm getting really tired of origin story pattern in movies because we have so many reboots and deconstructions that all we ever get is origin stories. The Dark Knight, Terminator 2, The Empire Strikes Back are some of the few movies that actually successfully moved the story along and improved upon the original. Usually the origin story is the best one in the franchise and after that no one knows what to write. I suspect it's the same problem we have in life were we know how to grow up but have no idea what to do with it.😅

The scariest thing about the Joker is that since he has no canon origin, we tend to imagine him as this great force of evil and chaos, but then you have to contend with the fact that it is possible, likely even, that he was once just an ordinary man who snapped. Be it a failed comedian, a two-bit crook or an injured soldier. He is a reflection of the darkness that dwells in all of us, waiting for something to set it free. And laughing.

I like how Heath got his 'voice' for the Joker based on a ventriloquist's dummy -- a dual-personality motif that fits him, as if an inner Self is speaking through his 'mask' of white face-paint, doing an 'act' that he finds amusing, even if others don't. And Bruce Wayne, too, masks his own voice when he's dressed as Batman, so they share this trait, though the Batman voice is made to be gravelly and scary, rather than like a ventriloquist's dummy. As much as I enjoyed Jack Nicholson's version of the Joker, Heath Ledger's performance just excelled it in every way imaginable.

I like to believe that the Joker would of told The Batman the true story of how he got the scars. He drops hints as to what he has gone throught in the movie. Then he would of cut Batman but not kill him. Batman would have to permanently be Batman after he gets cut because once he takes off his mask everyone is going to see Bruce Wayne's face cut. So he stays as Batman permanently and constantly fights the Joker. The Joker's sick dream comes true! Great Movie! The Joker could not tell a story of Bruce's parents. He doesn't know the true identity of The Batman. But by cutting him, he does not need to know who Batman really is.

@@munstersoldieroh but my friend you didnt pay attention. Like Nolans opening line in the prestige "are you watching closely?" The joker does indeed know who batman is. Its always in nolans writing/script. When he says "you know for a second there, I really thought you were harvey!" "The way you threw yourself after her!" And with ...."Does Harvey know about you and his little bunny?!!" The Joker is implying he knows that batman has some sort of connection to Rachel. He could tell ( hes good at reading people and batman did indeed throw himself rather hastly after Rachel, more than he would of with a regular person) and when the Joker makes this very keen observation being as intelligent as he is he puts two & two together. It wouldnt be hard for the joker from that moment in the film to look into rachels past and figure out who Bruce was. A very close childhood friend, rich, and who lost both parents at 8. Not like rachel would have a lot of those type of friends. This is also why I think the joker planned both rachels & Harveys demise so intelligently. Notice when gordon ask batman which he is going after batman replies with "Rachel!!!" Leaving gordon to go after Harvey. Problem is the joker anticiapted this ( knowing who batman is by this point) and switched the addresses on purpose. Knowing that ol bats would go for his love over Harvey/justice. Thus both scarring Bruce and Harvey. Two birds, one stone. He is very intelligent afterall, and was always one step ahead of all in film. Oh yes. The joker by the halfway point in film knew who Batman was. Hence having fun with him. Had he been able to finish his line about the scars at the end, I honestly think he would of revealed to batman he knew who he was making him the ultimate threat, especially for another film with Heath. Its very subtle, but thats Nolans style. Are you watching closely?

@@giveematug7093 Thank you for your detailed reply! I really enjoy the movie and it seems you did too! I do have a question. If Joker was able to figure out who Batman was when he dropped Rachel out the window, why hasn't anyone else at the party figure out who Batman is too? There were many people at that party that witnessed the same exact thing that Joker did, if not more. Bruce gets out of a helicopter and asked where Rachel Dawes was and introduce her and says "... she is my oldest friend..." . The entire party heard and witnessed that introduction, they witness the fight and Batman jumping out the window after her. At that point everyone would assume that it was Harvey Dent. Everyone learns that Harvey Dent is not Batman during the chase scene. But, during the interrogation of Joker, Joker says "Does Harvey know about you and his little bunny?". There are 8 Major Crimes Unit members that are tasked with figuring out who Batman is, and they were watching the interrogation. Wuertz is the one who let the Joker into the Penthouse and he himself witnessed the interrogation. After the interrogation Gordon ask who Batman is going after and he replies Rachel. Why? Because out of the two, Rachel is 1000% innocent! The mob and the Joker want Harvey Dent dead. Rachel is used as a pawn so the Joker can get away again. We also know this from the end of the movie when Gordon's family is held hostage by Dent. Dent states that the battle was within the three Dent, Gordon and Batman. Long/short, Bruce Wayne's 'pals' at the party and those men and women trained in the Major Crimes Unit can not figure out who Batman is even when the Joker shows up at Bruce Wayne's penthouse party, where Batman shows up and saves Rachel Dawes who is Harvey Dents girlfriend and Bruce Wayne's long time friend. But the Joker can, because he has Google? I really enjoyed the movie and it seems you did too!

@@munstersoldierI suppose the short answer would be that the others at the party arent supposed to figure it out ( for whatever reason, they are rich and maybe too preoccupied with party/a lil drunk, of arent intelligent enough to do so, bruce did uphold an image of being another "rich playboy" that is kinda too white collar, or in this instance its not what Nolan intended) they are afterall all in fear, and a lil drunk. Plus your point is very good! One would think that the rich at Bruces party would indeed make the connection between Rachel & Bruce, but the trouble with that is everyone knows that they are childhood friends and its not unusual. Also no one at party heard the joker make the statement to batman about him and his lil bunny ( but godon and cops do lol behind 2 way glass) So I suppose that it wasnt Nolans intention to have anyone else figure it out ( afterall in comics very few actually do) and to have Joker be the one to imply that he knows. Also many of the police were in dissary and mostly trying to deal with the chaos created by Joker throughout. When it comes to switching the adresses with Rachel & Harvey I truly believe that he did so knowing that Batman is Bruce. And knowing that would anticipate him going after Rachel ( long time love, his last shot at love without the cape). Joker also knew it would hurt both men. 2 birds one stone. Havey becomes twisted after and Bruce is quite shaken which was the Jokers intent ( it also confirms what he suspected that bats is indeed Bruce Wayne) Bruce would also go after Rachel obviously because thats his love and last chance ( least Bruce thinks so before he meets catwoman) so it would be gordon that would think its because she is innocent. Its very personal at that point for ol Bruce. Joker knew this. Bruce going after Rachel has nothing to do with dent. Its too personal for him. Again the people at the party already knew rachel & bruce are childhood friends so they woudlnt exactly suspect Bruce as batman. And I dont think Joker would simply use google to dig into rachels past to figure out who bruce is, but would learn of the waynes getting shot and possibly make a connection that most wouldnt even think of. The rich dont exactly dig much or look deep into things lol. But yes the cops that watch the interrogation scene are a lil hard to believe that they couldnt put 2 & 2 together and figure it out also ( but again everyone already knows bruce & rachel are friends and that bruces parents died) so they would naturally assume nothing is amiss. But if the joker looked at it not like the rest he could infact indeed make the connection. As far as most are concerned Bruce is just a rich playboy certainly not capable of being the "batman" considering he appears to be a "rich snob" type. Yes, I really enjoyed this film. One of my top 5 ( I'm 40 and remember watching Batman '89 at 7) and I'm so very glad you enjoyed it too! With a really good perspective ( your points are very valid & make sense, but not even Nolan is perfect lol) Oh and I just also realised that the rich ppl at his party wouldnt suspect bruce as batman because bruce made sure that the two ppl that saw him go into a panic room ( after he disarms thug and slips away from the party unnoticed, taking advantage of the joker having everyones attention) as they were fooling around were the only two. She even says "oh youve got to be kidding me!" As her and man watch as bruce slips into panic room. At this point Bruce would be considered a coward, spoiled rich kid lol that ran and hid in a panic room lol. Also being a lil drunk would add to it also. ( the two that see him dont look that bright and wouldnt think that bruce goes into room to change into batman, but to hide because he has to play a "persona") Hope that last observation makes sense. No one at party would suspect bruce as he was seen running and hiding in a panic room. Its a solid Alibi.

The “thin blue line” is a mile wide compared to this “thin Bat line”, and the joker wanted to see if he could break it.

Nice take. Simple but foundational for the character. You've earned a sub.

I think he's figuring his goals as he goes. But I also think that he wants to make up a team. To fight something bigger than Gotham's criminals. But how do you make someone to see the world as you do? To see the bigger picture. To see the source and not the symptom? He's also clearly is going through some deep crisis of his own. But he's okay with whatever happens.

@@FullFatVideos you're welcome. It's amazing how no one's ever really covered Joker's growth across the movie. It's sort of this unspoken thing, knowing his objective shifts across the film, which is odd for a villain in itself, but to have it actually pointed out and recognized as an arc of sorts, that's great stuff.

I really don’t understand this anxiousness to find a back story in the details. A big part of what made the Joker work so well in The Dark Knight was leaving it as a complete mystery who this guy is and what’s really driving him. That’s captured well in Alfred’s speech (‘…can’t be reasoned with. Can’t be bargained with. Some men just want to see the world burn’). and the ever changing back story of his scars. Like with horror/monster movies, the audience’s own imagination and unconscious are always way more effective in creating a threat than the depiction of one. In monster movies eventually you have to show your monster but the more clearly you show it, the more it takes _away_ from the impression it leaves on you. Nolan found a way to have his cake _and_ eat it: you see the ‘monster’ and yet you don’t.

as a writer i love this video, viewing the movie as a sort of double whammy secret origin story for the joker, i love when many little details subtly come together to add something new to the whole story

If The Dark Knight is Joker's origin story, then it's already the sequel. Gordon already told Batman about escalation at the end of Batman Begins. And the Joker has already started his crime spree then.

I like that the Joker is implied to rot in a cell, him appearing in another film would have only weakened his impact in TDK

I don’t think the Joker should have been a main villain again. But if Ledger had lived it would have been cool to see him during the Bane siege. Like maybe he breaks out and is temporarily on the side of the good guys. But gets thrown back in Arkham win the fighting is over, only to mourn the passing of his nemesis

i subscribe to patton oswalt's theory that he's ex-military in uprooting enemy infrastructure (town destroyer, anarchy division) then gets burned by his government/CO - and keeps the anarchy going cause he chooses to. As opposed to Killmonger in black panther, same military division, who usurped places and tries again for personal gain, then genocide as means to serve his people.
