The Jesus Prayer with Mary Minifie

Spiritual Practice Session of the 2015 Festival of Faiths 'Sacred Journeys and the Legacy of Thomas Merton,' held May 12-17 at Actors Theatre of Louisville in Kentucky.
Visit www.FESTIVALofFAITHS.org
The Jesus Prayer is particularly esteemed by the spiritual fathers of the Eastern Orthodox Hesychast tradition as a method of opening up the heart and brining about the 'Prayer of the Heart.' The 'Prayer of the Heart' is considered to be the unceasing prayer that the apostle Paul advocates in the New Testament. St.Theophan the Recluse regarded the Jesus Prayer as stronger than all other prayers by virtue of the power of the Holy Name of Jesus.
Mary Minifie is a classical realist painter who has practiced the Jesus Prayer for almost forty years. She studied the Jesus prayer under Rama Coomaraswamy, son of the renowned art critic and scholar Ananda Coomaraswamy.

This is the reason I changed the form of the prayer, on advice by my teacher, from the egocentric "part "have mercy on me,, the sinner" to "have mercy on us, the sinners'. If you do this, you should make an extra effort of 'sensing your own sinfulness on which the Prayer is partly based.

That’s typical Buddhist fluff. I understand the appeal but that doesn’t solve the problem. Flowery language isn’t what you should seek answers through. Nor your emotional response. The key to the prayer of the heart, as the desert fathers teach, is to not let thoughts go, but to identify them, and take them into captivity. They are the Orthodox fathers who developed the prayer. It’s not a “mantra” but a way of direct communion with God and conversation with Him. It doesn’t work. It’s cheesy second hand spirituality that you’ll find in the new age section at Chapters. And none of it works. The Jesus Prayer does. But only with proper understanding and this woman doesn’t have it.

When Moses came to the place appointed by Us, and his Lord addressed him, He said: "O my Lord! show (Thyself) to me, that I may look upon thee." Allah said: "By no means canst thou see Me (direct); But look upon the mount; if it abide in its place, then shalt thou see Me." When his Lord manifested His glory on the Mount, He made it as dust. And Moses fell down in a swoon. When he recovered his senses he said: "Glory be to Thee! to Thee I turn in repentance, and I am the first to believe." Great Quran

The breathing control is not essential. Interesting at how many of us balk at saying the word "sinner". I don't necessarily think this comes from pride, as much as from a wrong idea of God. God as cruel dispenser of punishment, damnation, etc. - perhaps taps into bad Theology and preaching many were exposed to. But the humility to admit our sinfulness is a great gift.

There are many reasons why the breath is so important - too many to go into here - but if you read Fr Martin Laird's book 'A sunlight absence' - ' I think you may change your mind about the importance of the breath. I did and I used to previously balk at those who emphasized the breath. However, I now realise that those who do so are normally those who would actually benefit most from it and in the book Fr Martin tells you why that's so.

Many people seem to like to borrow from our Ancient Faith but don’t follow the context, rituals, fasting & especially confession, all of which means we don’t think or feel like Catholics & Protestants. I know the difference, 1/2 my family were Protestant, living in the same house, the most beautiful & faith filled of humans, my beloved grandparents. For all the beauty I know there, there’s a different knowing that we have in Orthodoxy, the nous (look it up) that the rest hve lost. I don’t need a mantra. I have a relationship with an Almighty God because of Yeshua’s death on the cross. I can talk to Him any time, anywhere. The only meditation He requires of me is to meditate on His Word. New King James Version. And He likes me to speak His Word to Him. There’s power in His Word. This sounds like New Age mysticism and it could be prayer to Lucifer.

This is New Age theology and meditation practices wrapped up in a Christian bow. It makes you focus on YOU rather than having a genuine relationship with Jesus and prevents you from praying/interceding for others. How is repeating a phrase over and over having a true conversation with God? You wouldn't do that with anyone else on the planet or with Jesus himself if he was standing right in front of you. As tempting as it is, repeating mantras is simply not Biblical meditation: And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. I'm sure you have no problem repeating the Lord's prayer... She does say the difference between prayer and meditation is that prayer points towards Jesus. Like another commenter says, if you pray with sincerity and humility and not just say it mindlessly, you will be kept safe. The Bible passage you quoted refers to VAIN repetition.... And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Matthew 6:7 NKJV

This is a very ancient Christian practice. The ancient monks sought to follow what St. Paul says: 'pray always'. Babbling on to God with one's own words is merely an exercise of talking to one's own ego. This prayer is a direct quote from the Gospels.
