I am a staunch Catholic but the Jesus Prayer is my go to prayer. I would suggest all my fellow Catholics to start praying it.

Theologica Rex the words aside, the method of this prayer bares a striking resemblance to eastern yogic mantras and finding the inner light. I’m wondering if it’s truly compatible with orthodox Catholic Christianity?

@@adesertsojourner8015 it is true that many ancient religions and spiritualities look for the inner light but that does not mean that it should be taken away from us. The gospel and the letters of John claim that God is light. If God is light and the Spirit of God, by his grace lives in us then we have the light inside us. St Paul says that our bodies are the temple of the Holy spirit (1 Cor. 6) so may I offer this image for the Jesus prayer. The Jesus prayer allows us to begin at the surface, the outer courts of the temple. As we journey deeper and deeper inside ourselves with this prayer we move through the temple into the holy of holy, the place where God dwells in us, the inner light. This prayer is a way through which this union with God can be achieved. I hope this helps.

He was looking in better shape than my Orthodox Study Bible with his editing between the duct tape.

if you say the Jesus Prayer alot, you will actually find yourself practicing hesychasm quite naturally. for instance, i can say the Prayer twice at normal speed on one full breath. then breath again. if i slow down, just one. even slower, it goes "Lord Jesus Christ (breathe) Son of God (breathe) have mercy on me (breathe) a sinner." it really calms you down to just do somthing that you know is absolutely good in a relaxed, non anxious way. its Healing.

The Jesus prayer is for the beginners, just to focus the mind and invoke energy of bliss. Then when the self starts awaken and moves on towards other atomic worlds, ( uncreated light) experience different levels of illumination, understanding, and mastering. The goal is through continues experience to achieve detachment, dispassion, so he, she can purified. Then illumination, and different stages of union with different reality States. From ego center personality, towards unity center reality.the pure consciousness is starting evolving. Freedom from the lower and attachment to the higher.

His Eminence incredibly (but not surprisingly) weaves history and modernity of the Jesus Prayer in order to make proper suggestion to breathing techniques, in particular. The Metropolitan makes clear in this talk the earlier contexts that may not be easily comprehended by laity such as myself. Thank you for providing this publicly. Glory to Jesus Christ.

the St. Nikiforos account sounds like it is saying that when one concentrates on his own breathing with a simple mind, and prays while doing so, you love your own breathing and by extension your body for being alive, and you nurture love of God through prayer, and by appreciating your very life and praying to God at once, you see that your life comes from him, and it is an exeedingly joyous thing.

I think there is evidence in scripture and in the experience of mystic contemplatives (which is why they got in so much trouble, and indeed why Jesus himself got in so much trouble) that in fact we are God in essence, not just by grace. Not, of course the little self that we experience every day, but the invisible unknowable unity in which that appears.

"That which is said to participate in something possesses a part of that in which it participates; for if it participates not in a part only but in the whole, then strictly speaking it does not participate in but possesses that whole. Hence, if the participant must necessarily participate in a part, what is participated in is divisible. But the essence of God is in every way indivisible, and therefore it is altogether imparticipable. On the other hand, the property of the divine energy is to be divisible, as the holy father St John Chrysostom frequently affirms. Hence it is the divine energy that is participated in by those who have been privileged to receive deifying grace." ---St. Gregory Palamas, the great defender of Hesychasts.

Jesus was speaking about himself as the Kingdom being in their midst not being INSIDE THEM, NOT TO LOOK WITHIN SELF... You are teaching the NEW AGE CULT of looking within for God in order to Ascend to enlightenment (or Godhood), was this not what the serpent said to Eve you will become Gods? Luke 17:21 New International Version nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.” New Living Translation You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already among you.” You have based a whole theology on a mistranslation of one word. The Kingdom was not within them, it was AMONG THEM (JESUS)

This dude needs to come off his high horse... while he might have done some research on Hesychasm, he clearly has not mastered it. I was called to practice Hesychasm by God when I was 17 (long before I knew what it was called). Instead of the Jesus Prayer, God showed me a Latin phrase to use that is very similar. You'll never catch me speaking the way this dude does, that's for sure.

This comment and your later comments are unfortunately very arrogant. To calm yourself a true Christian mystic is to negate the humility known to be a key character of 'true mystics'. I would consider in your prayer life walk towards a more humble outlook. Secondly, it is not your place to attack a man who has given his life in service to God by the way that he speaks. You may have views on his academic stance but why stack him personally? What have you to gain but the disappointment of God for attacking one of his children.
