Bought my ‘04 WJ Laredo with 129k on it. It’s been my hauling, hunting and banging around ride for over 5 years now. Put a RC 2 inch BB on it with some 31s, rebuilt the front steering, along with the brakes. It’s run like a champ until a couple weeks ago. With almost 191k on it the transmission has gone out, specifically 3rd and 4th gear are MIA. 4 grand to pull the tranny out, rebuild it and put it back in. Luckily there’s a couple of WJs on marketplace with mileage in the 100,000 range for less than 5 grand. So, stop telling folks how nice and capable they are, you’re gonna drive the prices up! Good video!

I have an 04 that had the tranny go out around 210k. I got a remanufactured one for $1,500 online and paid a local shop $700 to swap them out. Got out for less than $2,500. I have the 4.0 i6 so here's to another 210k lol.

These WJs are in a class of their own. I've gone offroad ( mainly sand, deep powder sand and mud) with new Toyota Landcruisers, Isuzu Max, Hi-Lux and that Toyota with the rear doors that open weird... FJ I think. My 2002 Quadtrac2 I didn't need to let the tyres down but went a lot better when I did and had to pull the others out. It's a beast. Get one. Must admit, mine has a few mods. Lifted 2.5mm, all terrains as they don't need muds, upgraded balljoints, prop sharft etc. But it's the V8 engine and the mechanical quadtrac 2 that wins. It's amazing. Wish they had them at work instead of Toyota rubbish. I've been bogged in new HI-lux a few times and wished the jeep was there to help the day. Don't make them as they use too.

You should replace your front drive shaft with the double cardon one so you don't wear out your u-joints so fast. They came on certain models or you can get a custom one for more $. You can also put 1" spacers between the trans mount and the unibody to lower the angle. My WJ has both of these. Also, you were likely joking, but your rear window struts are worn out and you can get a complete set for the window, hatch and hood from the jungle site for about $20.

Very good commentary. I own a 2001 grand. 174,000 doesn't burn a drop of oil. I installed a 3" lift w/ Core 4×4 adjustable control arms with differential llift block for the "boomerang" upper spacer. 2007 JK aluminum 17" wheels w/Copper AT/3 tires. It's unstoppable. New front drive shaft & front hub bearing assembly. Until you do the work and appreciate the rewards your comments are appreciated.

I rarely floor the accelerator pedal of my 2004 WJ Overland with the High Output 4.7V8 powerplant that I recently snagged in a partial trade, The acceleration is fearsome and sudden, but this sure-footed beast also acquits itself admirably in deep mud or loose gravel while offering superb all-wheel-traction when driving along rain-slicked road surfaces, thanks to Quadra Drive2 in both trucks. Both my '04 WJ Overland and '04 WJ 4.7V8 Laredo ride on factory stock suspension with no lifts beyond the factory one-inch suspension lift on the Overland. Even if cost were no object, I would choose to drive a WJ as my primary means of transportation out here in the boonies where most roads are dirt roads.

Regardless any speed under 45mph maximum 35-45 mph letting off the gas and immediately thrusting the selector lever into neutral, shifting from drive to N then shifting to low range then back to drive also works on the fly. Please remember to ensure you're off the gas during this move.

To be fair, this isnt the finest modded WJ. Nothing of the sort, however it is still quite capable. You are supposed to upgrade the front DS when you do a 4in lift kit, otherwise it will, as shown, cause it to fail prematurely. Also if you are going for 4in, do the gas tank tuck. Its not that difficult and makes the vehicle far more capable.

Good comprehensive review. Agreed, it's a Chrysler and not a Toyota, so longevity is likely not the same.... BUT it depends in large part how it was cared for in both cases. I do wish you were a little more daring on going through the mud and not around some of the holes. This suggests maybe it could not have handled it, which i know is not correct especially with the larger tires. Oh, one side note, the largest tire that fits in the spare well is 245-70-17 and 'just barely' when new. With a little wear on it then the fit is fine! Kudos.
