The Japanese man who gets paid to 'do nothing' - BBC REEL

Shoji Morimoto provides a very unusual rental service to his clients in Tokyo, hiring himself out in order to, quite literally, do nothing.
He has fashioned a career out of renting himself out to clients who simply don't want to be alone. Shoji doesn't engage in conversation or do anything other than just be there at whatever event or activity he has been hired to attend, and yet he is in high demand, scheduling one to three sessions a day.

Hi @BBC Reel, I think there is some issues with the audio mixing in this video. If you play the audio for this video in mono, many of the speaking voices from the interview with the guy would just be gone and completely cannot be heard. From my understanding, this can happen when the left and right audio signals destructively cancel each other when mixed into monosound, and which produces distorted/muffled sound. I have some hearing issues with one of my ear, so I play videos with accessibility settings enabled to mix stereo/surround sound into monosound. I hope your audio engineer can figure out a setup that would avoid these kinds of issues in future videos 😀

idk why people are confused by him saying “creepy vibes” but i’ll try and explain. When he is “doing nothing” with the people, he doesn’t make anything awkward or weird, and he doesn’t make people feel uncomfortable. Sometimes someone who makes others feel uncomfortable may seem like a creep or a wierdo. Hence, giving off “creepy vibes”

He is actually doing a lot for the women in the video. He is an on demand traveling companion. He is professional (punctual and respectful, and does not make sexual or relationship demands on these women). He is also a good listener. For the women there are no obligations like with a friend. He gives support when and where the women want and then the women can move on with their lives.

Besides the video giving examples, I could give personal experiences. As explained by one of my professors, just being there for someone has been described by some of her clients as the best therapy they received.

For example, facial expressions or a vibe around someone, even if it is sometimes very subtle, can tell more than 1000 words. Conscious listening and observation can certainly be a social skill. Many people talk and carry on a conversation, but not many people are really good at conscious listening and observing. Those things are definitely ''social skills'' in my books. Actually, I think "Doing nothing guy" is genius branding in its own right. As other people have written, he often steps into the role as a sort of "therapist". And the common experience almost all people have with therapists is a person who literally does nothing but sit and listen to you. So instead of going to a therapist, people would rather just hire a person who purports to do the exact same thing, only explicitly. It simply makes more sense. Especially for women. I can't count the number of times I've been asked out only to be someone to whom they can vent all their troubles. And it honestly doesn't bother me. But in a society like Japan, where people are so incredibly busy with work and interests, merely being a person who is virtually present in somebody's life is marketable. It has an inherent commercial value, because it's rare to come by even though everyone needs it.

I think the fact he says he does nothing makes it easier for people to hire him because there are no strings attached, they don’t have to do anything either when they’re with him, they can be themselves, they can experience what it’s like just sitting next to someone and enjoy their presence without any other expectations. It’s a lot. It’s probably very soothing and healing, just to have a relaxed person next to you who doesn’t expect anything from you, he’s just there for you.

Some people in Japan are professional listeners. He will listen but prefers not to have to respond. That would be doing something. He certainly doesn't give advice.
