The Jabberwock's Soaring Flights - Session #2

Ғылым және технология

The Jabberwock doin' it's thing in the early morning cold, and the late day sun. A memorable day with the 32" span OldTime rubber free-flight model from the late 1930s. Filmed by Tom Hallman, using a Canon PowerShot SX20, iPhones 11Pro & 14Pro. Music: "Calling Angels" by the talented Jennifer DeFrayne. Free Jabberwock plan: outerzone.co.uk/plan_details....

Here's my Jabberwock story from December 16, 2023:
It was a fantastic day at Wawa!! Cold at sunrise (28º) but it was calm…with the wind between 2-6 mph the rest of the day. Much better than expected. It might have hit 50º but it never felt that
way. It was around 44º at sunset.
I had a couple of sunrise flights with the Jabberwock, the first being an ROR, or rise off road,
since the sod dirt / turf was too frosted and rough. If I wasn’t awake yet after the 3:45am rise back home, I was now as I attempted, with shivering hands, to attach the prop hook to the fully wound motor. It nearly slipped thru, but was caught by the end of my prop shaft hook, on one of the holes in the crocket hook. That could’ve led to a disaster and a totally different day. But she launched with enough speed...although she was helped by the prop nicking a pebble, which seemed to propel her. This led to a beautiful flight, be it a bit low, alongside a passing flock of crows.
I left around 3PM, went to nearby Soons Orchard for a fresh Bumbleberry pie, but as I neared the Wawa entrance silos on the way back home, I decided to turn in for a couple of sunset flights with the Jabberwock. The air was almost dead calm…and the sky was fantastic, with about 45 minutes of light left, so I couldn’t resist. The Jabberwock maxed, flying thru the sun for numerous passes.
Icing. These designs by the late Wally Simmers from the 1930s really know how to fly.
The two hour drive home was a breeze, as I replayed these memorable flights.

Lovely Tom, I enjoyed the way the model 'disappeared' then reappeared through the setting sun, and to have a camera filming for that landing ... amazing lol! Have a great Christmas and New Year, best wishes from the UK 😁👍

I truly appreciate your videos. I am often inspired by them. They also bring to mind those models, that despite all odds (my somewhat less than steller building technique) turned out to be floaters. They made my heart soar they way it does when I see your builds and videos. Thank you for documenting our hobby with such artistry and skill.

Gorgeous flights, Tom, and such beautiful filming - I see that everybody thinks the same in the comments below, and I am not at all surprised - there's something very moving about the fragility of the model aircraft, and the huge sky behind. And I'm pretty sure I built that model over forty years ago (but it didn't fly so well...). Thanks, Tom (from France).

A lovely film Tom, and the perfect antidote to a day's hard hand sanding of Aquaglass varnish, I can tell you! The altitude economy exiting initial power burst on this remarkable plane seems to be as consistent as as it is perfect, no stally drooping or shenanigans whatsoever. A wonderfully atmospheric video, complimented beautifully by the excellent music. A happy Christmas to you and all your family and friends at Flying Aces, and thanks again for this superb AM/PM contrast at the flying field! 🎄⭐👍

Ouch. 28 degrees. Launching with left shoulder pointing into the sun may prevent annoying flare in the camera.

l was just curious Tom but does the cold temp effect the rubber bands and how?

  • @maxfliart

Yes, it tends to give out less torque or power, as seen in this film...it was 28º in the morning, but closer to 45º in the afternoon, where she was able to fly higher. But it was also less damp, so the model might have been a bit lighter than in the morning. The first time I realized how much less power a motor could have in the cold was when I was flying indoors in the early 90s. A 16" Bostonian flew to the rafters 30' above in a warm gymnasium. Two days later I used the same sized motor at a much larger, but colder helicopter hangar in Pax River (Maryland), and the model would only climb to 15', and came down with many winds left. I had to use more cross section to get her to go. So it's no surprise that the Jabberwock stayed lower at Wawayanda.
