@@Wesleech I live in the world where it was a box office bomb, losing 20 million dollars during it's theatrical release? It was received well by critics, but it was not popular. Other than its opening weekend not a lot of people went to see the film, because marketing and advertising was nearly non-existent.

Hello. I was one of the animators on Iron Giant. So glad you loved the film. We're all very happy that it's found it's audience and is considered one of the very best of it's kind. Just as an FYI. There will be NO sequel. It was never intended to have endless sequels. Just a "One and done" sort of thing. And really....that's just one more thing that makes this movie all that much more special. All the very best to you! :)

The director of the Rocketeer (Joe Johnston) was given the duty to come up with the initial designs for our Robot. It was then fine tuned by Giant supervising animator Steve Markowski and the development team. Glad you love the film! All the best.

Hogarth's dad was more than a pilot, in the photo he is stepping on the wing of his fighter jet to get into the cockpit. I figured he was a jet pilot in the Korean war and was killed. Brad Berg said he thought viewers would not notice the photo, but he was surprised at how many did see the picture and put that part of the story together.

This movie was made by the same animation team that later made The Incredibles. The director, Brad Bird, wanted to keep the artistic touch of 2D animators and their designs relevant in the age of 3D animation. You can see the similarities in the designs of the characters. Especially with the long faced redheaded antagonist, and the attractively animated mom lol But not only is the animation familiar, but the concept of having children and families experiencing very real, scary, dangerous, and mature situations.

"Same rules apply to rain as snow?" Yes and no. There are 'degrees' to snow. If it's not cold enough, snow is 'wet' like the bottom of a snowcone. It's slushy and slippery. When 'perfect' snow falls, it's not any more dangerous than rain at the start. And might remain that way for at least the first full day. It's when the snow packs into ice that it becomes truly dangerous.

Thanks for your reaction to this great film, guys. My understanding of the Mansley character is that he represents the simmering and barely controlled paranoia of the 50s. Back then, so many people were terrified of the threat of Russia and communism (Sputnik is mentioned several times in the film). Mansley's the quintessential portrait of that fear. His refusal to trust the Giant and simply leave him alone is caused by his unwillingness to let go of his fears, perhaps because they're the only thing that help him make sense of the world.

The director Brad Bird is now a live action film director... but back in the 80s he was a young animation prodigy.. a wunderkind if you will. He did a short called "Family Dog" that was very Simsonsesque (just prior to the Simpsons debuting on the Tracy Ullman show), and then went on to be an animation consultant on The Simpsons.. and his work on that show really upped the game on the first few seasons of that show. He also directed their music video, 'Do the Bartman" which got a huge primetime push on Fox back in the day.

The Iron Giant is a very underrated animated movie. It's got darker undertones and is more realistic. The older I get, the more distanced I am from Disney movies (the current crop, not the 90s movies) coz of how childish or saccharine they can be. But The Iron Giant is a rare exception. The saddest movie I have ever watched is 'Grave of the fireflies' directed by Isao Takahata (co-founder of Studio Ghibli).. The opening line of the movie is ' September 21, 1945. That was the night I died'. The movie left me mourning for these fictional character for days, heart broken.. It's a powerful masterpiece of a tragedy which I will never watch again (because it's THAT sad).

That’s Kent’s arc, his descent into the paranoia of the era. This is the time of the space race and Soviet Sputnik “ominously” orbiting over us. He at first is dismissive of the threat and then eventually let’s the fear of the unknown so consume him that he is willing to blast a town with a nuclear weapon to stop it. We’ve seen in the news recently some individuals with guns have been whipped up into such a frenzy of fear that they are firing at people who turn into the wrong driveway or ring the bell at the incorrect address.

A few 'fun facts'* - This movie came out in1999, the same year as Episode One of George Lucas's little space movie...🙄 - This was the third of thee animated features from Warner Bros that year (the first two being 'Quest for Camelot', and 'Cats Don't Dance'). either of those films did very well at the box office, and so the decision was made to not put any marketing behind this film... To this day, I hope the person who made that decision is still looking for work...😠 - To add insult to injury, no category existed at that time for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards...🙁 - Brad Bird went on to direct 'The Incredibles' for Pixar. During that film, note the call letters of the jet that Helen is flying; 'India Golf Niner Niner', or 'IG99'... A little nod to this film...😊 *.Obviously, a strange, new definition of 'fun' of which you were previously unaware... 😛

There was another animated Warner Brothers movie from the 90s that didn't do well at the box office, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, based off of Batman: The Animated Series, it flopped at the box office because Warner Brothers didn't want to Market it because the year earlier, they got bombarded with complaints from angry parents for Batman Returns for being too dark and adult oriented, so when mask of the Phantasm was in the works, Warner Brothers didn't Market it to avoid parents complaining about it being an animated superhero movie involving murders and depression and corrupt politics

@@FanaticMitchell1 indeed… I often tell people to watch both’Batman Begins’ and ‘Mask of the Phantasm’ back to back, and determine where the character is better represented… Don’t get me started on the 55 gallon drum of Dark Reality Grit, that Warner Brothers decided to dip all their films in following the Nolan Bat Trilogy…😝

The reason this movie has so much mature references and deals with more mature content is because the writer of the movies sister was murdered do to gun violence and the writer thought “what if a gun had a soul and decided that it didn’t want to be a gun”.

90 movies were the best. Look at the recent Jumanji-light movies and compare to the original with Robin Williams. Original was so much more creative yet grounded in real issues stuff the sequels wouldn’t waist their time with.

10/10 YES!!!!! NO SONG OR DANCE NUMBERS!!!!!! What a GREAT movie! Not just for kids, but adults as well. Kids will love it on one level, and adults will love it on another level. Even adults who are not parents will love it! There's humor, there's action, there's nostalgia, there's the perfect capture of being a child, there are positive messages (be yourself, don't kill, etc.), there's satire, there are adults who are not stupid and not comic relief....there's GREAT WRITING! AND NO SONG AND DANCE NUMBERS! Also, there are NO COMIC-RELIEF ANIMAL SIDEKICKS! Take that, Disney! I know some people might be resisting this movie, because it looks like it's aimed for kids - and they might be expecting a Disney clone (and we all know the bad results of Disney wannabes).....but TRUST ME. Give this movie a chance - you'll love it! Is there ANYTHING wrong with it? Well, the only thing that bugged me (just a little) were some close-ups of the characters - these certain close-ups had a "sketchy" look a la the movies "We're Back!" and "Balto". Fortunately, there's very little of this. Other than that - this is a PERFECT MOVIE!
