WHAAAAAAAAAAAAA????? YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IRON GIANT. GODDAMN MASTERPIECE. Unfortunately, they created the "Best Animated Feature category one year after this movie was released and Bombed in the Theater.
The director made this film inspired from when his sister was gun down by her ex-husband, so he questioned “What if a gun had a soul?”, “How would it feel?” and “Would it still want to be one if it had a choice?”. Thus birthed the cult classic we have now. This film was is also based on a book with a similar anti-war sentiment, but with a different story.

Oh, The Iron Giant will forever be one of my top movies of all-time. I've probably seen it close to 50 times by now and I cry every time. It's one of those movies that I consider perfect from start to end. I loved it the first time I saw it when I was 8 years old and I still love it just as much today. Dean is probably the most relatable character for me and continues to be as I get older. All I need is my espresso, my art, and my house in the woods away from town. And let me live my life in peace, thank you! 💛

Agreed, it's among my top favorite classic animated movies from my childhood, the only one not made by Disney or DreamWorks, though both have a fair share of classically good movies from that era too
From “Superman” to “I am Groot,” Vin Diesel is a voice actor who I didn’t know was a great voice actor. I also love the lesson of “the body may die, but the soul lives forever” as another underlying message handling the loss of a loved one. Plus the pitch of, “What if a gun had a soul, and didn’t want to be a gun” makes this movie extra special next to this being dedicated to Susan Bird, may the forces chaos have given her peace.
The Signature Edition has this incredible scene where Dean is watching, horrified, as the Giant's dreams/nightmares of his origin/previous life are being broadcast on his TV.

I worked at a theater when this came out. There was almost no advertising for it, plus Disney was still the king of animation at the time. That's why it did rather poorly. Thankfully, the internet has told its tale, and the film has slowly been growing in popularity for years.

10/10 movie… one of the best cartoon stories. Good for kids, and even better for adults
If you're not tearing up at the end when the Giant tells Hogarth to stay and he'll go than frankly you have no heart or soul.
"Where ya goin'? Where ya goin'? Where ya goin'?" "IM GOIN' OUT!!" Makes me laugh every time. 🤣 Love this movie, one of my childhood favourites. ❤️
"Because you are a Kent." - Mary at her most savage.
The director of this movie, Brad Bird, would go on to join Pixar and make Ratatouille and both Incredibles movies and has also recently directed a Mission:Impossible film (Ghost Protocol) and Tomorrowland. He really does have a great storyteller's mind and delivers his vision to the screen.
"Superman" ..😭😭😭 Almost never picked up DVD to watch it first time bc assumed it was a lame cartoon based on nothing - missus insisted I do and so glad she persuaded me. (Though she giggled a little too hard when my eyes watered at the Superman moment)

one of my favorite animated films ever. it hits that perfect spot between nostalgia, saccharine sweetness, and darkness/horror. spoilers below-- - - - as to how the giant survived, aside from just "it's a kid's movie, so he lives," 1) this thing didn't burn up on entry into earth's atmosphere or so much as flinch at everything else the army threw at him. he's clearly pretty sturdy. 2) he's also clearly built to break into pieces when hit with enough force rather than be crushed, so i guess you could theorize that something about how he's constructed made him fall to pieces rather than be vaporized by the bomb.

If a gun had a soul, would it still choose to be a weapon? a beautiful question which casued a beautiful film Watching this as a little kid, i loved it when the giant turns on the army, wiping out tanks and sneding them running. now i understand how tragic it is, he tired so hard to resist and in one moment of weakness the purpose he was built for takes over. it makes what he does in the end so much more beautiful
The giants roar always gives me shivers, it’s not deep bellow or scary it’s just pure rage and anger.
The squirrel in the beginning reminded me of a squirrel we encountered during a trip to one of the Disney parks when my kids were very little. The squirrels there were so accustomed to being around humans that they seemed almost tame. Note I said "almost tame". When one of us reached out towards it, it took a swipe at the hand.

One of the greatest animated films, so glad you reacted! I get goose bumps everytime he goes berserk
“Is this movie a Hidden Gem, ‘cause I literally just heard about it” It’s literally THE hidden gem of animated movies
I legitimately love this movie so much, how misunderstood the giant was is indeed tragic. That he was given an incredible opportunity to be what he chose to be and he became a hero it's beautiful... That being said the thing that's always stuck with me since childhood is: the only reason he had independence was because of his crash landing. Had that not happened he'd have followed his function and destroyed earth and likely would have signaled the others to wipe out the planet, because keep in mind there's a ton of other ones out there following the function to destroy planets and likely conquer the survivors of each conquest. That alone was terrifying and really made the future bleak, one giant who chose to be more than a weapon against armies that never made the same choice because they never had the chance to break away from their function. Shame we never got a sequel because I wanted more (still do lol) and I'd love to see how they get out of that situation! (Keep in mind that the reason I believe they dodged a massive bullet temporarily is because the Giant arrived alone, he's a scout and that means when it doesn't report back there's going to be an investigation and when life is found on earth.... Yeah that's not going to end well I don't think)
One of those fantastic films I wish had been a bigger part of my childhood (saw it once at a friend’s birthday party and then I don’t think I saw it again until high school)
GREAT choice - beautiful flick. If this doesn't make you emotional, ladies and gents.. you got something missing, fr. 🤖
This movie is a classic. It initially bombed in the box office but became popular when it reached home video. This movie kicked off Brad Bird's career before Pixar picked him up to do The Incredibles.

This is what got Vin Diesel the roll of Groot.
IMO one of the greatest animated movies EVER made. I cried towards the end the first time I saw it, but every viewing since then I've been teary at SO MANY parts because I know the foreshadowing...
There are two scenes that always break me in this film. The Giant’s sacrifice, of course. The other is the “souls don’t die” scene. With the latter scene with Hogarth consoling and giving hope to the Giant informing and giving extra power to the later sacrifice scene.
Hey Mary, you need to watch "The Fox and The Hound" if you haven't trust me it's one of Disney's darkest animations, but a true work of art

wow.. I loved this movie as a little boy
I remember when this came out. I was amazed at the animation. Not so impressive today, what with modern photorealistic CGI, but still noteworthy. It was my interpretation that the massive electrical shock the Giant got at the beginning gave him a sort of amnesia. He imprinted on what Hogarth told him and internalized it. Nerd quibble: the USS Nautilus carried no missiles. The first SSBN was the USS George Washington, launched in 1959, a few years late for this story. Then again, it's a fairy tale, so what the heck. 😏

This story is a classic. Pete Townshend made a musical out of it and I'm pretty sure it is the motif of Queen's "News Of The World" cover.
If you listen closely you can hear the Iron Giant whisper "Ride to Die" as he flys off to destroy the missile.

I cherish Iron Giant ~Team Hogarth
I've always loved that the dent on Iron Giant's head suggests a reason that he's "not a gun" is from a trauma he received that changed his personality and perspective, and is the one element of his that he never reverts when he reassembles. The film is loosely based on a children's book written by Ted Hughes to help his kids deal with the loss of their mother, Sylvia Plath. Hughes was wildly problematic but it's still a pretty poignant part of the origin. Bird had his own loss he was exploring in directing the film, and he weaved in the gun violence element which makes it a more mature and existential story.
I can still remember my dad coming home with this movie for us on VHS. I was only 4 years old but its so crisp in my mind. Ever since I have always loved this movie. I still have the vhs of this movie, ready to be played.

Such a beautiful film ❤
This movie was adapted from the children’s novel “The Iron Man”. The novel had a different story though, where the main antagonist was a space creature called the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon and was the size of Australia. The Iron Man challenged the dragon to a feat of strength by seeing who could withstand the most heat and told the dragon to lie on the sun. In the end the Dragon lost by being burnt while the Iron Man only had a melted ear. Upon it’s defeat, the Dragon went around the world and started singing which ended all conflicts around the world.
I hope you remember The Iron Giant was in Ready Player One. It was an epic cameo.
