The Irish troops watching Israel's hidden war - BBC News

Along Israel's northern border with Lebanon, since 7 October the Israel Defence Forces have also been engaged in continuous fighting against the Lebanon-based Islamist armed group and political party Hezbollah.
The group are seen as terrorists by governments including the UK, and have long been opposed to Israel’s presence in disputed lands in the south of the country - resulting not in a border, but a so-called ‘blue line’ drawn by the UN, dividing the two nations.
From the Lebanese front line, embedded with Irish UN peacekeeping troops, Nafiseh Kohnavard reports.

    Fascinating, I met an Asian Dr in the U.K. he spoke with a slight Irish accent and used Irish colloquialisms, I asked if had visited Ireland, replied that he trained at Waterford Regional Hospital. I asked him if he popped into Ardkeen Superstore on his way home after a shift; the Waitrose of Waterford, he was taken back and said that he loved his time in Ireland but a Consultant post was much easier to obtain in the U.K. I imagine that he wouldn’t be as culturally isolated in the U.K. small world.

    Great guys and well done to them, but UNIFIL is a joke. UNSC Resolution 1701 said that Hezbollah must keep to the north of the Litani river, but in fact it is at the border, so their first and foremost mission is null. Besides, they follow Hezbollah orders, and when Hezbollah tells them to clear off, they follow instructions, and have done nothing so far to stop Hezbollah. Same is true with Lebanese Military but that's another thing. This story fails to show that Hezbollah has been attacking and firing daily into Israel, and it only mentions Israeli retaliations but that's to be expected from the BBC. Preventing a war starting in the northern border is crucial for both Lebanese and Israelis. UNIFIL is doing a very poor job at ensuring peace on our borders, again with all due respect to the brave soldiers there who surely are doing their best personally. The problem is organizational, not the individual soldier's fault. Let's hope the border remains relatively stable and Hezbollah don't try to pull any major attack off in service of their Iranian masters and at the cost of Israeli and Lebanese lives.

  • @kavisattva

    @kavisattva

    6 ай бұрын

    @@shortfattoad7317Regardless of what you think about the occurrences in Gaza, in Lebanon Israel has been retaliating against continuous Hezbollah attacks. All violations of the ceasefire there are started by Hezbollah (I believe the same is true with regard to Hamas's violation of the ceasefire on Oct 7 attack with its jihadist attack, but that's another matter). If you think there are Israeli violations on the Lebanese borders in recent years like i stated in my comment - you are free to state them. You are "thinking that the Israelis are the biggest threat to humanity..." - OK so you think that. Everybody has his own thoughts to enjoy. It's always good to challenge them, check the reality and history, try to see why you believe so, but it's fine that you should think so. I studied the history and reached different conclusions. All the best, have a great day.

  • @kavisattva

    @kavisattva

    6 ай бұрын

    @@maxpowerii7368 Hi Max. I'm obviously biased as I'm Israel and have been under attack by Hezbollah, and have witnessed the destruction that followed their 2006 attack on Israel, so I have no problem with my 'bias' being 'revealed'. However: 1. Yes I said 'Iranian masters' - How is that biased? Everybody knows and it's an established and obvious fact that Hezbollah is a proxy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Is there any serious claim that it is not that? 2. You say that if peace does not last, it's Israel's fault - Hezbollah has attacked Israel countless times in last two months, it's ALWAYS started by Hezbollah and followed by Israeli retaliation. So already I don't understand what 'peace' is to last. Does peace mean only Hezbollah attacks Israel without retaliation? ALSO - Why is it Israel's fault alone? In 2006 they crossed the border to take hostages, while firing crazy number of rockets (Hezbollah has more rockets than almost any standard army in the world) - is this also automatically Israel's fault as you say? How is it that Israel's neighbors can attack Israel and still somehow it is automatically Israel's fault alone as you claim? As for the claim that "UNFIL is doing the best job it can with very tight parameters" - I don't necessarily disagree. As I said I have a lot of respect for the soldiers on the ground, what I have a problem with is those 'parameters' that include UNIFIL taking orders from an Iranian proxy. This is document and a fact, and if you don't believe Hezbollah is an Iranian proxy or that it commands UNIFIL around you can easily research and see that is the fact. I am not blaming those Irish soldiers and I appreciate their efforts, but the reality is that as a peacekeeping organization it performs very poorly as there are daily attacks into Israel by Hezbollah that is not even supposed to be there according to international agreements, but only north of Litani river.

In the past IDF would try to release p oi so n bo m bs in the form of b al oons or do ll s in the borders. Children would always be the vi c tim . I think it’s naive and simplistic to talk about truth ,oppression and freedom in relation to either either Irish catholic’s or Palestinian Muslims when they appear to be fighting for an intolerant regime that opposes and acts against woman’s rights ,gay rights and religious freedom .especially while using terrorism as a weapon .Did it never occur to you to wonder why so many Irish went to England to escape intolerance,or why the Israeli Arabs are not kicking off .
