Song, Band Without A Country, by George Millar (Red Maddie Music / SOCAN)
From ☘️SAINTS And SINNERS ☘️: lnk.to/saintsandsinners

So many of these photos look familiar to me! This was just about the time I became aware of The Irish Rovers, I loved them then and love them still. I remember as a kid, I had seen photos of the band with either 4 or 5 members. I wrote them a letter and asked if there was 4 or 5 in the group? They sent me back a post card with a picture of 4 of them, and they wrote on it, "There are 5 of us, we are getting new pic soon." That was my prized possession for the longest time! (PS: The picture at 2:32 is the post card they sent me.)

My ancestors originally came from county MAYO, which according to my late Mom 👩 was located outside of Belfast, Ireland 🇮🇪. They and thousands more fled during the Irish Potato 🥔 Famine! We all came through Ellis Island before or after the Civil War, and we scattered all over the United States 🇺🇸 . My Mom, Great-grandmother, and my late Dad's Mother, all told me that my family was related to at least 5-6 others by marriage 💑. Still proud 👏 to be Irish, German, Dutch, English, and maybe a bit of Indian mixed in there. Enjoyed your tunes from the time I was a wee 👦, teenager, and now as an old man 👴!

George, I agree, great song, and a great tale to go with it. Having rediscovered you and your music...whether it's a full-fledged movie or at least some kind of documentary, SOMEONE needs to come talk to you and the surviving Rovers about your group history, honestly. The fact you've kept the spirit of Irish folk music around for some many years, and been so welcome all over the world, that story is worth sharing.

Listening to this on repeat for the last 30 mins. I am reminded of reading an article where a Republic of Ireland ambassador was quoted in turning the words: "these Irish are more Irish themselves" In Ireland's favor. He was speaking to an Irish-American audience. With regards to the question you ask, for me: a Dutchman who is specializing in Irish history, this song makes me confident that I could go for an Irishman although I played the English Hockey and play the English Rugby. (see history of the Gaelic Journal/League). And as Ireland atm is actively seeking immigrants who speak Dutch; would I want to be an Irishman, I can be an Irishman. As can you because already in 1894/95 the most Irish Journal of Irishness was actively asking Irish famine migrants (my interpretation of the Newfoundland bit) to come back to Erin. And as the song Everyone is Irish/the five sisters by the Irish buskers exclaims; "Everyone is Irish if they think they are" So if I am, you lads are definitely Irish. Seeing as listening to you makes me want to go a little bit further in researching Irish history (as I have been doing for 6 years through 8 papers, and I am 100% Dutch :D

Thanks for giving me chills George! The Irish Rovers story is an epic tale that needs to be shared with the world. I don’t think the younger generation knows just how popular this amazing group was and for George to continue the legacy as frontman for the band is heart warming. A movie doc should be made. Just the few stories Will Millar shared with me of the early days of The Irish Rovers had me yearning for more!

Hello there George and the Lads. It is indeed listening and watching you without Will. It’s hard to believe that 34 Years Since Kathy and I sat with him and Catherine in their home in Black Rock or a cup of tea with you other and Father G-D rest them. I’m sure he’s quite happy in Vancouver Island no doubt. As for Jimmy RIP, The old Bun Warier days are long gone. Listening to you all singing about raising a glass to St Patrick is a real chuckle, then again you Ballymena boys know how to Spin a good yarn “nod, nod, wink, wink” and all that stuff! The photo of that old car with the Shamrock and the Red. Hand of Ulster caught my eye and another chuckle. Perhaps we shall catch up should you make a trip down under. Obviously it Won’t be any time soon thanks to COVID. Keep well and keep singing. Lee

Fifth generation immigrant here - not five generations since immigration, five generations of immigrants. A man without a country - belonging nowhere, but in a much more beautiful sense, belonging everywhere

@@theoneamongthehidden4387 I don't know how to explain it, but it really pushes you to be complete with yourself. Cuz you've got friends and family across the whole planet which is nice, but at the end of the day, the only person you always have is yourself - I'd imagine that would be very lonely for many people but for me it brings a lot of peace, the idea of "belonging to yourself". I think the song captures it well with "And yet we're always welcome, no matter where we roam. No-one wants to claim us" - just add a lot of self-love being necessary
