It's fitting that he admires Oscar Wilde, the Lord of Language himself so adamantly. Through his admiration for the English language and a peculiar and exceptional understanding of it, Stephen Fry seems to become, inspire, and convince us all of words; essentially the quality of being an intrinsic "Lord of Language."

I only just recently found out about Stephen Fry. His style of speech and vocabulary is wonderful to listen to, his opinion is highly educated and sound, and his character to stand up and speak his mind freely about something as infuriatingly poisonous as religion is exciting and admirable. This man is excellent. Watch him tear apart the catholic church with such verbal expertise, I love it!

He speaks such sound logic here about the man made tripe thought up by the catholic church and how little JC himself would recognise, indeed if he were here today I'm sure his reaction would not be dissimilar to that he showed to the money changers in the temple

Absolutely brilliant. If was possible to knight someone for services to eloquence, wisdom, and the power of the spoken language, then none is more deserving than Stephen Fry. This is fantastic. It's about time the Roman Catholic Church realised its failures and remedied them. Roman Catholics are lovely people - my head boy at school is one and I cannot think of a more delightful young gentlemen. But the church as an institution needs to look at itself in a damned good mirror.

Stephen Fry is one of the most intelligent and elequent people of our time. This is one of the most brilliant speeches I've ever come across. It's passionate, informative and most importantly the truth. It's all very well people having their faith, but not when overrides common sense, basic human rights and descriminates against homosexuals, women and others. In short keep your religion to yourself and don't force it on others who don't want it. Peace:)

@DietDrMario I was genuinely pleased to see the wisdom of this comment. I agree with you from before and is therefore far from an unbiased reader, but it is important to take dogmatism with a grain (or shaker, if you will) of salt. I am not a Buddhist but a nihilist, yet what the world needs is not the claims to be right, but the will to find the truth, no matter how long it takes.

@Gediness Actually, I say that that's precisely what a religion is: a certain group's interpretation of original values (though I might say texts). This is the "value" of heresy in a religious tradition.

@dancupid I understand your well made, polite point (such things are rare on youtube, I'm sure you'll agree). While my picture of modern life differs drastically from your I do agree that it is possible to get bogged down in the more murkey aspects. However, why does the escapism needed to cope have to come from something so flawed and with such dangerous manifestations? Why not lose yourself in Mark Twain, Shakespeare and Dickens rather than Genesis and Dueteronomy?

There is really only one measure of a government, society, religion, family or person: Do they promote love, kindness and justice - or hate, division and injustice. What do you see and hear around you? And, will you believe your own eyes and ears, or rely of what you're told? As a wise man said 2500 years ago; “Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.” ― Buddha Siddhartha Guatama Shakyamuni

@philipmarie1854 He isn't hateful of religion, as he clearly points out that he likes people with faith; he thinks it is a wonderful thing to have, and we shouldn't try to take it away. What he's saying is that the institutions are corrupt, and needs change. He isn't challenging morality, or trying to change our perspective of it. All he is doing is highlighting the failures of the Catholic Church in response to the motion. And he is wise, amazingly so.

@Clifton100 Copernican rotation was a widely accepted view within the Church. Galileo was brought to Rome by high ranking Churchmen in order to work on his science there. Yes, there were some in the Church who opposed heliocentrism, but the Church as a body took no official position on it. It was never Church doctrine that the sun went around the earth; rather, that was the astronomical belief inherited from the classical Greek and Roman world.

Now why didn't you include the next few lines: "Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber wrote in a confidential report that Hitler "undoubtedly lives in belief in God" and that he "recognizes Christianity as the builder of western culture." "Nazi General Gerhard Engel reported in his diary that in 1941 Hitler stated, "I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so."

@philipmarie1854 "I'm aware of the Mortara case but Edgardo truly was baptized ." Edgardo was baptized by a fourteen-year-old illiterate Catholic servant, without his parents’ permission, consent or knowledge. Then the Pope kidnap the child from the parents, saying that since he was baptised as Catholic (even though the girl was no priest) he was forever a Catholic and shouldn't be raised Jewish. Well the same is true for Hitler, another Catholic that never left the Church.

Recently, concerning the visit of the Pope in the UK, Fry argued that he shouldn't be received with such honours, because he is not at the head of a proper state. And here he insists that the Vatican IS a state. Otherwise, nice.
