    The joy is the reason to live an intellectual life. Perhaps we can be more precise about why the process is joyful. Could it be something larger than ourselves? To realize there is even more that we don’t know? Is a purely deterministic view of a God, who “knows better than we do” the final answer to this question? I think not. Nevertheless, I love this description of the intellectual life, the mess, the struggle incident and necessary to updating our idea of the world, of ethics, of truth.
