The Veritas Forum

Founded in 1992, The Veritas Forum invites students and faculty to bring their whole selves to wrestle with life’s most confounding ideas and be changed by them.

Motivated by the historic Christian faith that seeks to love God and neighbor, we offer robust programs and events that encourage students and faculty from universities across the globe to engage their backgrounds, beliefs, and passions in a diverse community of exploration-one that puts the Christian faith in dialogue with other beliefs and invites participants from all backgrounds to seek truth together. Because we believe that an openness to discovery-and a posture of humility-are foundational to both the Christian story and a flourishing university.

The only way to prove the truth of the gospel of John is to go back 2000 years in a time machine. .having said that it has been stated that people who speak the truth can quote conversations they heard. .John 21:23 certainly sounds like someone is quoting an actual conversation(!)

Well, Also the Fact of the Hebrew Text , that has been translated into English , as; ....."In the Beginning", of which HEBREW Word is; ..."b'rashith", meaning; ...in the "Dateless Past" !! And the Word Translated "Heaven" ( singular in the English ) is the HEBREW Word "shmim" meaning: ..."HEAVENS" ( plural ) Here is my Comment to DON CHAPMAN, of "YOUNG EARTH CREATIONISM". Donn Chapman, I want you to consider the following;....God's word, in Hebrews.11:3 declares, ..."Through faith we understand that the Worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." That means that God 'SPOKE INTO EXISTENCE' , the MATERIAL UNIVERSE !!! So how long did it take God to "Create" the material Universe ? The Bible does not say that !! But we have some interesting "clues" from Gen.1:3-2:3, concerning the "Re-Creative and Restorative" work, of the six days. God took One Day, to divide darkness and light on planet Earth. ( Gen.1:3-5 ) And this "First Day", only happened "After" the Announced ; ..."In The Beginning" ( The DATELESS PAST of Gen. 1:1 ) God took another Day, to divide the Waters. ( Gen.1:6-8 ) God took Another Day, to restore "Dry land". ( Gen.1:9-13 ) God took another Day, to regulate the SUN , MOON and the STARS, in connection with the restored Earth. (Gen.1:14-19 ) And all this was done by God SPEAKING ( Commanding it ) into being, ( as in Gen.1:9,...." And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so." And Notice Donn; Acording to Job.38:4-7, the Earth was Created Long "After" the Heavens and the Stars were Created !! And the Earth was Created to be inhabited, Isa.45:18 !! And in Gen.1:10, the Word" EARTH", means the "DRY LAND." And in 2.Pet.3:5-7, we are told that the HEAVENS were of Old, and and the EARTH, standing "Out of the Water, and In the Water." So using a little Common Sense and Logic, based on the facts of the Astronomical Claim, that there are approximately 40,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, ( 40 Sextillion ) Stars in Space, and they tell us that each of those Stars, are a SUN to other PLANETS. Then the question I have for you, Sir,... is this; If God "spoke" things into being, as is declared in Hebrews 11:3, and God used One DAY, to complete each of the Four RESTORATIVE ACTS in the first FOUR Days or the "Recreation/ Restoration", 6227 years ago, of the Originally Created Earth, in the "Dateless Past" !! Would it not be LOGICAL to Assume that God used at least ONE DAY, to "speak into being", Each of the Approximately 40 sextillion STARS that the Astronomers Claim are in the Universe ?? And how many YEARS Does 40 sextillion "days" amount to according to your reckoning , Donn ??? So you see Donn Chapman, Even though EVOLUTION is WRONG, as to the Creative acts of God. Their DATING of Millions of years, might Not be that far off !!!! And One thing is ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN, and that is that the ORIGINAL CREATION of the Heavens and the Earth, took place much more than 6,000 years ago, and Science and the Bible are Much more COMPATIBLE that you assume them to be !! As your limited Knowledge and "Indoctrinated Education", seems to be the MAIN Problem here !! Morgan Sorensen ( Biblical Theologian )

If we go to the basics without pulling the name of any religion: I am here and there is no way I can discount myself. I recognize that I am limited especially when I see a huge Universe around. That is my existential conundrum. So I have to invent a father figure who is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient etc., and I believe by appealing to him by agreeing to be his vassal he will protect me. That is how God appears on the scene and holds power over all of us. 1.Accepting an external god and agreeing to be his vassal at all times is called Dvaitham ( classic duality in religion). 2.Accepting the external god while knowing yourself to be a spirit (self) makes one somewhat equal to god, but agreeing that he is always separate and all the omni-s rolled together and eternally paying obeisance to him is called Visishtadvaitham*. Most religions including Christianity come under this. * Visishtam means separate, detail, particular etc., Advaitham means non-dual. So those believers who agree that all others are spirits themselves co-eval with each other but have a separate existence from god, eternally. 3. Accepting a godly notion and knowing that you are a spirit capable of becoming all those qualities ascribed to god if and when you are agreeable to give up your mind, intellect and the world around you and just become a choiceless Awareness, you become him or that. This is Advaitham 4. Not accepting any god figure is Atheism. This is the difference between Atheism and Christianity.

1 Corinthians 2:12-14 Now we have received, NOT the SPIRIT of the WORLD, but the SPIRIT which is of GOD, that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the NATURAL MAN RECEIVES NOT the THINGS of the SPIRIT OF GOD: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Pain and suffering is often the result fo evil, not a punishment. Cancer, in particular, comes often, not always, from keeping evil in the soul by desperation, unforgiveness, bad memories, bitterness... To put it simply, not letting it go poisons us and cancer or some other diseases come. NOt to mention all kinds of poisons in nature and society...

As an animals lover, why is it that when there are debates on good and evil, why we do not mention the atrocities that animals suffer at our hands on a daily basis. Many of these atrocities happen as a result of our food choices. Calves taken from their mothers at birth, and sent to slaughter, so we can eat cheese, pigs kept in gestation crates for weeks on end, unable to turn around, chickens cramped into cages unable move, the list goes on. Animals in factory farms become sick, depressed and their short lives are full of misery. Why is it always human suffering that is highlighted in these talks. Animals feel pain in the same way as we do and we need t speak u for them too. ,

She is saying EVERYTHING that I’ve accused atheists of from a belief stance including them needing to realize that they ALSO do have their strong presuppositions, like their strong rejection of the supernatural which forever keeps them from seeing the gospel fairly, and unprovable claims despite their staunch insistence that every single one of their “scientific” beliefs are 100% proven and not reliant on any faith. That is a bold faced lie or you truly haven’t looked at it like this woman said she was guilty of. On a much more humble note, I also have thought about some of the things she spoke of when I’ve had doubts of faith in Christianity. If the disciples were lying, how in the world did they come up with some of the stuff they did? The resurrection or some of the spiritual stuff like the Holy Spirit/Trinity. Not only is it outside of Jewish cultural norms but it’s just so odd. I guess they could have been really creative but idk. It’s hard to believe people could come up with some of that stuff. Same goes for Jesus’ red text. If he didn’t exist, then how did they come up with some of those parables and sayings? Some are just so random and weird. Like how? A lot of them explain the human condition and nature so well that it convinces me that someone extremely wise actually preached these. I believe them to be the Son of Man.

The Jews and Christians of the First Century didn't think that heaven was some "other dimension" for example. "Popular cosmology at the dawn of the Common Era in the Middle East held that the universe was geocentric and spherical and divided into many layers (see Chapter 3, §1), with the first layer of ‘heaven’ often called the ‘firmament’ (being the foundation holding up all the others) and consisting of all the air between the earth and the moon (or sometimes the same term only meant the topmost part of this: the sphere traveled by the moon)." I also want to mention the other women talked about discrepancies in accounts regarding the civil war. As far as I know there are no supernatural miracle accounts with regards to the CW. Anecdotal evidence is very weak... for anything! Stacking layers on top of layers of anecdotal evidence doesn't, in any way, add credence to the claim. This professor's conversion to evangelical christianity is poor example of skepticism or critical thinking. As a history professor, she is aware of the importance of Historiography, and she should be committed to abstaining from bias and assessing source material that is the best evidence, and discounting evidence that is unreliable. In this endeavor, she is failing. It's one thing to convert to a new religion -- it's entirely another to teach the critical skill historiography (which history professors can and must do) and then practice and proclaim something very different, deficient, and deeply-biased.
