    my first deployment to north eastern Afghanistan/ Pakistan Border, we were so sleep deprived that most of us were combat ineffective. some times there were so few of us in the outpost that we couldnt stay indoors for any reason. we had to do everything outside to give the illusion that there was more of us than there was. Little did they knew that plenty of times they could had just walk up to the front gates with a squad and wipe us out, since most of our assets were out on patrol. We built decoy 60mm mortars and M240's to put on the hescos and guard towers, to make it seem like we had defensive assets ready to engage. The reality was that HQ took our 81mm mortar, the 60mm was out on patrol, and all we had was the 120mm, that required an act of congress to get clearance to fire. after about 48-72 hours of staying "combat ready", walking around, doing labor, and "showing our numbers", we started to collapse of exhaustion. Then we had an outbreak of some stomach virus that wiped a few of the guys. We were being protected by a few AFG's, a cook, a medic, and 2 mechanics for the better part of a week. When the attack came, it was brutal. If it wasn't for the rotary wing escort to the medevac clearing out the attackers, we could had been overrun. That was 2008, I still cant sleep more than 2 hours at a time.

    I totally believe and agree with you. I worked as a contractor there, and was a Marine before that, and got to spend a lot of time around a lot of higher ups, and there also seems to be this mentality of wanting to 'paint their slides green' so to speak, wanting to show that they can still make the mission happen despite a lack of resources. Sometimes it's about wanting to look good to their higher ups, sometimes it's because they're afraid to talk back to them in order to stick up for their troops. A lot of times it's because they don't see it as an issue because "back in my day we had it worse" while not having any understanding of the context. There are certainly times when you have to stay awake for prolonged periods, like extended firefights and whatnot, but there are plenty of times when you're forced to stay awake for literally no reason, even in the rear. You think an aircraft mechanic is gonna do a complex repair like engine work 100% correctly when you've kept him working 12 hours a day and on weekends while not even on a deployment? Pilots die because of that shit. People kill themselves because their family falls apart due to their servicemember not being able to spend time with them despite sleeping in the same house. I'm not even talking about training periods, either. My old unit was a Harrier squadron who was notorious for making people come in on weekends just because they wanted to have more flight hours then the squadron next door to them. Our pilots didn't perform as well due to being stressed out from flying all the time, the units budget was always strained from spending money on repair parts because more flying means more broken jets, and everybody collectively hated the unit. Meanwhile the squadron next door beat them anyway, all their Marines were motivated to work, and most importantly their leadership was well-respected and admired. We even had a grunt lat-move over and after two years he wanted to go back to the infantry because "Fuck this shit".

    Funny thing is Vietnam had been facing invasions from stronger neighbours for the last 1000 years, to resist was in their blood, what America didn't realise was their involvement was just another road block to get over, the Vietnamese where quite happy if their great grandchildren had to continue the struggle, what's another 100 years of fighting in the long scheme of things. That's why they lost, while winning every battle.

    We were forced to endure 2 to 3 hr "briefings" twice every week for over 6 months on everything from "proper pronouns", and "don't grape", to "white fragility" and "combating the Patriarchy". These so-called "briefings" we're usually conducted by washed, perfumed and carefully coiffed female officers in starched uniforms from brigade or division HQ who they would chopper in to our FOB, and they would leave as soon as the "lessons" were over. If they did stay any longer, their food and drinks were brought in special and they DID NOT share any of it with us. I once overheard two of them complaining about how much they disliked doing these "briefings" because it took them away from their "real" work back at HQ(writing reports, running keyboards and the like)and they didn't like mixing with the "front liners" because everything out at the FOBs was dirty, including the soldiers and it all smelled bad. There was also a time when two of them refused to airlift a couple of wounded joes back with them because they were so bloody and those guys had to wait for a med-vac to get them to the rear. Meanwhile, first-aid, commo, weapons and intel classes have to be re-scheduled or cancelled to accommodate the "Sensitivity Officers" time frames. It only got worse once we got back stateside and many of us got out. From what I've heard, it's worse yet and the SJWs and NPCs rule the roost. Our opponents may not be able to beat us on the battlefield but they sure as h*'ll are beating us from the inside. RIP to all our buddies who didn't make it, God bless them.

    Why we sleep - Matthew Walker. Changed my life, literally, got out of bad habits and never felt healthier physically or mentally despite getting older. Sleep when you're dead doesn't matter when you are dead at 35. Every hour of sleep under 8 hours is a pint of beer's effect on your decision making, physical awareness and emotional stability.

  • @troglodyte1052

    @troglodyte1052

    Жыл бұрын

    True. Going without sleep is a necessity at times. That doesn't mean that you should do it frequently or without good reason. I try to get 8+ hours of sleep at least 6 days a week (at least during normal weeks), and it makes a big difference. A lot of the people who are all "you should teach yourself to function on 3 hours of sleep a night" have just been functioning on like 40% capacity for years on end, and just don't know what they would be capable of if they were properly rested. You do most of your shooting in a low-stress environment at the range, where you can focus on fundamentals. Then you do live-action type high stress stuff to see where you're at. You do most of your lifting at below 70% of your max. Then you put some real weight on the bar every once in a while to asses your gains. Similarly, you want to do most of your training while well-rested. The hippocampus (critical for memory formation and integration) doesn't do so hot when you're sleep deprived. Every once in a while, you put it all together in a high-stress, low-sleep setting. That should not be your baseline.

    Excellent breakdown of one of the most overlooked facets of conflict. In Iraq not only was the fighting/ insurgent activity and ambushes relatively dictated by the weather (though somewhat circumstantial as some years the fighting was heavy all throughout the day and/ or night-- usually it was firefights and ambushes via small arms and such during the day, and rocket or mortar attacks at night, could allllmost put it to a schedule based on where you were and the quantity of the insurgent contingency), but also the prayers in the day. Rarely did they attack during prayer, on occasion a foreign fighter might stir something up though usually more likely was triggering an IED/ EFP on a convoy or patrol during those times. The other aspect in the cities were the local population, if they weren't out on the streets and running the shops in the middle of the day, you knew something was about to cook off-- or, if the locals were giving physical indicators (heavy nervousness or aggression in cultural form i.e. showing the soles of the shoe/ sandal to the patrol), something was likely to go down as they were either alerting the insurgents of your presence or were preparing to ambush you themselves with an IED or something like grenades. The major holidays (like Ramadan) would change things up and most of the fighting would happen at night, some IED related incidents during the day, but otherwise during those times it was scarce to see many people out and about.

    I always think of that Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner commercial with the bubbles that have brushes on the bottom of them zooming around the toilet, cleaning it. During the sleep process, the brain releases an enzymes that clear out the cob webs (such as cholesterol) from the day and get your mind in a more organized state, like a computer defragging. The less you sleep over a long period, the harder it is to get to sleep, and the cob webs built up. A life of little sleep will eventually lead to dementia. There are other causes of dementia. Lack of sleep is one of them. 0 2 : 0 1

  • @minhducnguyen9276

    @minhducnguyen9276

    11 ай бұрын

    It's quite close to what you thought. The main component of the "cobweb" you mentioned is ADPs. You feel sleepy because the concentration of ADPs rises. Like they said at schools "mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cells", the mitochondria do generate energy for the cells but how they transfer that energy is less like a powerplant and more like the old school milkman. The mitochondria send out energy in the form of the ATP molecules, the cells break down ATPs into ADP molecules to get the energy then return the ADPs so it can be recycled. Just like the milkman collects empty bottles to be refilled. sleep is important for the brain because for the same weight, the brain consumes 5 times as much energy as the muscle. The brain simply will always create more ADP than it can recycle. When the ADP concentration is high enough, the receptors inside the brain will send the signals, making you feel sleepy. Because anything that builds up more than normal in your body will become toxic eventually. Not to mention the mitochondria can't collect ADPs fast enough due to their limited rate of transport through the membrane so they won't have enough ADPs to recycle back into ATPs no matter how much oxygen and nutrients are available. Sleeping allows your body to spend energy to recharge all the built up ADPs, turning them back into ATPs for storage. Not to mention cells create all kinds of byproducts that can interfere with life functions and have to be cleared out. Sleep is also when the immune system is most active since it can use the spare energy to seek out and destroy whatever it has missed during the day.

The fact that you have a lot of downtime onbetween assignments in which you wait but cant sleep is important. I would say downtime is 50% as affective as sleep. I tried to do the same cycle of little sleep over long periods in jobs that reuire you to be there all the time and miserably failed. Its simly impossible. It will take maybe a week and you will feel so miserable that you simply sleep in in the morning.

    My advice for insurgents from an Afghanistan vet. I would do periodic attacks through out the day/night cycle for several days before a major attack to make the occupiers sleep deprived. I mean just like a 5 min shootout then break contact. It will put the whole base on guard and get them sleep deprived and complacent. My second piece of advice (VERY IMPORTANT) make sure you stay flexible and don't get bogged down. The helicopters and air assets killed so many dudes over there. If you are stationary against the US it will only be a matter of time before a whistling sound of a missile from an attack helicopter you cant even see whips your whole cell out.

    I think insurgents and even conventional units around the world started to learn just how advantaged the US NVG and sensor superiority is. There is less reason to do your business or infiltrate a US position when some bloke can see you on thermal. And they are not ready for the sort of high-intensity mechanized conflict nation-states can do to one another. I've read about mortar harassment being used this way. Mortars can be packed up and on the move after some harassment and they're not as directly exposed to the US outpost. It forces the occupants of a UN post to relocate to a shelter or take positions on the fence just in case it will be a raid. Insurgent groups and such organizations have their own support work. They will also have a ratio between frontline fighters and support and logistics work. A lot of their man-hours can be spent moving stuff, contacting people, recce, buying food, making propaganda and giving what medical care they got. Sometimes people in these orgs do these things full-time.

    While I can cruise in high-crime areas with typically no trouble because of my swarthy complexion and ability to relate to people, there's always a risk of being a collateral damage from a conflict that has nothing to do with me given the habit of some to spray in the direction of their target without regard for where errant bullets might land. For that reason, I find mornings after daylight to be a good time to venture into the badlands. Crazy homeless people are still a variable. But the better armed, hard-core thugs are either working or sleeping.

    I unknowingly sleep this cycle as an american chicken farmer in his first year free ranging chickens living in a shed in a clearing in a rainforest(If you don't know, that means I am constantly under siege by nature) . For me it came about as a result of living my way for a while. I wake up with the sun, ready their food, wait around listening for my dogs barking to alert me of predator birds until the sun has completely raised over the tree tops. Then they free range and I watch them until I nap for an hour at 2pm-3pm, go back out and patrol my property perimeter, do some chores then get the chickens to their enclosure before the sun drops below the tree tops to secure them from the Owls coyotes and coons. I stay on high alert listening for my dog barks until I fall back asleep around midnight and do it all over again, but have managed to find a groove in my sporadic sleep that keeps me feeling alright

    In Mali, the insurgents actively tried to sabotage that. They would do nighttime mortar harassment on UN outposts. Not necessarily accurate or intense, just enough to disturb them and keep the pressure on them.

    can't make the enemy fight by your rules. when you have to fight and loose sleep, you do. like water rationing, you cannot ration sleep, bank it for future use. when you can, sleep.
