The INSANE Prime of Larry Walker

Спорт

Larry Walker is one of the best Canadians to ever play baseball. But originally, that wasn’t the plan. Over time, he realized that life had other plans in store for him, and rose to the top of his generation within Major League Baseball. There aren’t many players who can compare to Walker in terms of overall game. He had a rocket for an arm, and could the hit the cover off the ball. He also has quite possibly the funniest blooper in All Star Game history. From his five tool talent to his iconic SpongeBob shirt, there’s a lot to discuss surrounding the life and career of Larry Walker.

As a kid, I was absolutely pumped when Walker became a Cardinal. His time there, while short, was a lot of fun as a fan. It's too bad we couldn't send him out a winner in 2005, but he made quite an impression in his short time here.

I really enjoyed watching him those two years. While he was a very old looking 37 and 38 year old he had a very high baseball IQ and was impressive because of it. The Berkman career revival reminded me a lot of Walker's two years with the team.

I've been a baseball fan since I'm about 6-7, in the early 80's and I looked up to players like Rickey Henderson, Wally Backman, Dave Winfield etc but when I was a little older, I started playing stratomatic baseball, with dice and cards and Larry Walker was 1 of the most coveted players anyone could draft for a team. His #'s were amazing ! And on both sides of the ball. He was a solid defender with a lazer for an arm . This guy was a class act who was a natural athlete. A joy to watch !

Larry did a rehab stint with our local Salem, VA single-A affiliate club after one of his injuries. That he was playing in this small town was big news & he did not disappoint. He hit a ball that appeared to still be ascending when it left the stadium, and ended up landing across a 4 lane road that ran behind the right field wall and in the back yard of a home across that road. It was an actual "man among boys" moment if there ever was one.

Yeah me too. Baseball is terrible now. At least at the major league level. Every hitter just closing their eyes and swinging out of their jock straps while reciting a prayer. Oh and the ghost runner on 2nd base. Never would have believed this game I once loved would come to this. These videos and old baseball video games keep my baseball memories alive. What a game this used to be in the 90s and 00s.

You would think its a no brainer that he would be the Canadian athlete of the Year but it happen to coincide with Jaques Villeneuve winning the F1 title .I told him i thought he got burned and he gave kudos to the racer and shrugged it off , My impression of him was a pure gentleman who was as thick at the waist as any inshape person could be. This guy was truely a class act. I've been watching baseball since I'm about 6-7, in the mid-80's & I immediately fell in love with the style of play that players such as Rickey Henderson, Lenny dykstra, mookie Wilson, Andy Van Slyke & many others. In the 80's & 90's there were a lot of players who regularly got their uniforms dirty, not so much these days. In fact, it seems to me that even though baseball players are(in my opinion) generally the 2nd best athletes in professional organized sports, ( behind soccer players). All this I say to convey to those who are younger than me or just getting into baseball that, there are very few if anyone players like Larry Walker any more. It's not just the physical stature added to practice & skill cultivated etc. It's a mindset. A personality that is rare today or at least it's rare in the public eye. Which is understandable. If you want to see hard nosed, tough, truely magnificent baseball games, watch games from the 80's & 90's !Larry Walker, Steve Finley, Kieth Hernandez, Don Mattingly, Nolan Ryan, Greg Maddox ! These are players who played the game as it's t was ment to be played ! Who made others observe divine fun on the diamond in the game of inches! God bless them all

I've been a baseball fan ever since I attended my first game at Busch in 1966. In the 90's I didn't care for all the hype surrounding the so-called superstars, like Griffey and Thomas. I was more into guys like Molitor, Brett, Gwynn, of course my boy Ozzie, and Walker - the regular guys who simply went out every day and played the game. I understand that they are also in the Hall of Fame, but they did it the old fashioned way.
