    1. Best video on IHC. Thank you. 2. Were there 2 versions of the bronze type , one being thicker then thinning out the same year, or did the IHC thin out at the same it changed to bronze? I've always understood it thinned out later. This makes a big difference when metal detecting as this would give it 3 different signals when hunting.

Hello D D, Thank You for your comment! From what I understand, the last year the cent was minted as a Copper/Nickel alloy- in 1864, there were two different coins minted based upon weight and composition. The first 1864 Indian Heads were minted with the Copper/Nickel alloy (rarest) weighing 4.67 grams, while the latter 1864 Indian Heads minted in Bronze composition (not as rare) weighed 3.11 grams. So, it appears there were two versions of the 1864 Indian Head Cent, 1) Copper-Nickel (4.67g) & 2) Bronze (3.11g) The mintages for these were: 1864 Thicker Cent (Copper/Nickel alloy) - 13,740,000 1864 Thinner Cent (Bronze Composite- Copper, Tin & Zinc) - 39,233,714 However, apparently there were some slight variations in the 1864 bronze cents that were produced in 1864 as some on the reverse side have a small "L" on the ribbon, next to the bottom feather for the last name intial of the designer James B. Longacre. The coins with the small "L" are worth substantially more than those without. Hopefully I answered your question. Good luck collecting! Thank you and May God Bless you!
