The Dime: Complete History and Evolution of the U.S. Dime

One of the oldest denominations around, the U.S. dime started in 1796 but had some interesting precursors made in 1792 with a neat copper pattern coin. Since then, it has undergone tons of different designs (over ten) and I'm here to cover all of them. In this presentation, we'll go over the different facets of the dimes in terms of their histories, errors, values, and neat tidbits of information about how they evolved and why they did so. I certainly learned a ton about the coins as I made this video and I hope you do too!

Thank you for your presentation! If you haven't already, maybe you can give everyone an idea of how to grade mercury dimes.. These are among one of the most difficult coins to grade between fine and very fine. Had lots of difficulty finding a 1921-D in very fine or above! Seller's on eBay would often over grade between fine and very fine! Remember... The two diagonal bands must show clearly to be very fine! Even though the 1921-D is weaker on these elements, very fine or above must have this feature visible... Otherwise, it's below VF! Thank you!

It's not just about numismatic value, but the history itself in our coins and currency. Thanks for the breakdown, Christian. How do you find the time with work and your studies? Thanks for sharing. 👍 💲👍

When did the diameter of the dime shrink to current diameter ? I have an 1832 and 1834 that do not fit in a standard current cut hole in a plan dime book .

Ten Cents. The US government had the "idea" that we coin collectors were causing the coin shortage of that era because (FAKE NEWS) "coins were being collected by the mint marks on them." (They just didn't make enough coins for the population.)

Is it considered safe to buy coins over the internet? Is there a way to prejudge websites? Littleton coins for instance? I really dislike making the drive only to find out the coin I want isn’t in the condition I want for the price. I’d prefer to leave like a hundred dollar deposit in exchange for them chasing down the coin. Apparently I’ve got trust issues. But I’m definitely done buying coins that are really worn and getting buyers remorse instantly. Bill

The fasces was one of the symbols of Rome. One rod may be weak, but bundled together they are strong. It was a popular symbol of collective strength until Fascist Italy adopted it and sort of ruined the fun for everybody else.
