    Years ago I went to Hong Kong. One evening while walking down a sidewalk I saw a mouse run into a sewer. I said look, a mouse just ran into the sewer. Someone said, that wasn't a mouse, it was a cockroach. That was the biggest cockroach I've ever seen. I don't mind rats, mice, spiders, snakes or almost any creatures, except cockroaches. I can't stand them. Mosquitoes and flies are irritating, but I don't hate them like I hate cockroaches. One of my favorite commercials was years ago. A couple were dancing with lots of foot movement, someone came out and said STOP, that's no way to kill roaches.

    The trap does not actually trigger on the rat height sensor. When the forward sensor is triggered, it simply checks the rat height sensor to see if it is also blocked. if it is, then it considers the it to be a rat. They are definitely BIG rats!

    I'd say try greasing the outer edge so if a rat tries to hold on after triggering the trap it might slip in, along with moving the rat sensor another centimeter or two further in or use two sensors that have to be simultaneously triggered for the rat in the event that placing a sensor further in might trigger off a mouse standing while eating.

This way the dropping door pulls the side wall down and pushes the rat down. That solenoid is quite powerful and should easily force the rat down. redrok

    @@duanecjohnson An interesting idea, I considered something like a raising drawbridge that could come up and push it into the trap. I have already made changes for rev 2 to deal with the larger rats that might be enough. I have lengthened the trap by an inch, raised the ceiling by an inch and widened it by .5 inch. This may be enough because if the rat does not need to stretch out to get into the tunnel, its feet will be closer together so even a larger rat may fit inside the trap. Also, if their butt doesn't hit the top of the trap I think they would fall in even if their feet were still outside of the trap. I expected the rats to be really skittish but was really surprised by the rat that triggered the trap four times in a row.

    This is a great trap, excellent design. You could probably even incorporate a zapper into the flap so the rat gets zapped for 30 sec or so when triggered, and then disposed by way of the flap. I wonder what the battery life is like if the electromagnet is being powered continually?

  • @robertbullock7926

    @robertbullock7926

    2 жыл бұрын

    The trap door is held shut by a rare earth magnet. The electromagnet is only powered for about 1/100th of a second. Since it is the opposite polarity of the magnet, they repel and that is what launches the trap door open. I am expecting the battery life to be somewhere in the four months on a charge range.

    1. The food ledge could be set further back, or maybe a small cup for peanut butter set inside the back wall, you only need 1 tsp of the stuff. "sniff sniff!!" 2. The length, width and height of tunnel need slight enlargement for those mama rats. 3. The tunnel entrance needs a smooth curved transition like a funnel so that mama pack rat can't anchor her hind legs on the walls edge. Otherwise a GREAT prototype... Like, REALLY great! While I like the idea of electronic self setting traps, from a mechanical perspective I do prefer the independence of a mechanical self setting trap, no batteries or glitches from mouse pee or rain to damage the circuits. Lucky rats! non evasive, in a remote shed. Not getting relocated, killed or eaten. quite possibly the luckiest caught rodents I've seen on this channel to date! =D Another great video by rodent catching legend... Shawn Woods. ^_^

    Now that is a great design for a rat / mousetrap But I'm not the only one thinking that the mother set up the young ones to be caught?

    I *just* built a very similar trap! Same solenoid setup and sideways trap door! It's actually shaped more like a traditional mailbox (because I wanted it to be seamless on top), but lacks the flag. I built my trap on top of a cage rather than a bucket (I wanted it to only be a humane trap), which gave me more room to work with and visibility as to what I caught. (There's also a camera watching and recording everything.) It currently uses a low-power capacitive touch sensor as the trigger rather than an IR beam. I am only concerned with rats (including babies), so didn't consider trying to distinguish between rats and mice, but I once built a very similar dual-beam device to distinguish between cats and dogs at my parents' place. (They allowed their cats into their living room, but not their dogs, so if a dog tried to enter, it sounded an annoying beeper (that I intended to replace with something inaudible to humans once it was working reliably). I ran into problems, though, with cats' tails sometimes fooling the device into thinking it was a dog. I also suspect the dogs would have eventually figured out how evade being detected.

    I think that woulda worked perfect for the rat if it had just been a little longer. I love this channel, really interesting to see all the ingenuity people bring

    Pack rats remind me of docile giant mice, we caught one under a bowl once you n mama's kitchen is n Salt Lake City Utah. It was calm and seemed confused. We took it out of town and let it go.

    The pack rat pups appear to have been contemplating staying. Food, clean sheets, toys, add water and give them a chance and they probably would have.
