for a country that once upon a time owned half of the world , its not surprising. Our continental land is just too small to contain our Portuguese spirit , so we needed half the world to balance it 😂

A Thai here! A lot of our desserts are actually of Portuguese origins/influence, especially ones made with egg yolk and sugar, often with "thong" (gold) in their names (eg. "Foi Thong" originating from "Fios de ovos")

The Portuguese, unlike many other colonial superpowers, were (and still are) a very small nation. They didn't have the manpower to occupy by themselves so many territories, from Brasil to Africa to India to Japan!... so since early on, they were encouraged to mix with local population, unlike the English, for example, who always distanced themselves from the locals (based on a false believe of superiority of race that culprited in apartheid regimes). The Portuguese were themselves a mixed race already because the Iberian peninsula had been colonized by many people over the centuries. We have Romanized Celtic, Goth and Moorish blood. We are definitely not "caucasian white", like the some right wing folks proclaim. That's a total ignorance of the Portuguese History. 😅 We like to mix! 🎉

I'm Portuguese and love Thailand, it's my second home where I have lived and visited many times in the past 13 years. It's lovely to still see this strong connection after like 500 years when Portugal, the first European nation, made contact with the Kingdom of Ayutthaya.

I am Portuguese Canadian, There is so much to learn of Portuguese history around the world, I met someone once from Bangladesh and they shared amazing stories that I had no idea the extent of the Portuguese culture.

I am Portuguese and I can say with some degree of confidence these dishes look like the ones my grandma made, so ... I'm pretty impressed. I guess I have to go to Thailand soon

I'm an authentic Portuguese and Just yesterday I cooked that chickendish with spaghetti.It's delicious and very easy to make.Step 1(4 people),cover the bottom of a recipient with olive oil,2 teaspoons of paprika powder,add 1 teaspoon of black pepper,add 2 bayleaves and some salt(taste it),dice up finely half an onion and 1 clove of garlic.put it on a small fire,glaze the onion an garlic,dice up 2 large chickenbreasts and sear the chicken,when the chicken seared add 1 glass of dry white wine,and a pint of water,let cook for half an hour if necessary add some water,if it has reduced too much,keep tasting and and keep seasoning,when the chicken is nearly cooked add the pasta and let it cook,when ready correct the seasoning ,with salt and pepper,there must still be enough sauce to cook the pasta,near the end the sauce will have thickened keep adding water and a bit of wine there must be still enough sauce to fill the bottom of the plates,enjoy,next time do the same but with rice !!cheers!!

The word bread (Kanom Pang) in Thai comes from "pão" in Portuguese. Breads in Southeast Asia tends to be soft and sweet because the influence of Portuguese pastries, except for French colonial countries such as Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam that favor Baguette.

Wow...😮interesting to see the Portuguese influences around the world 🌎 I love eggy sweets 😋

We also make a similar portuguese dessert called toucinho do ceu containing almonds.

Em casa dos meus familiares ( em portugal) cozinhava-se maravilhosamente, as festas de anos e dias santos tinham uma mesa grande cheia dos salgados e doces mais maravilhosos que já comi. A minha mãe á alguns anos atrás ainda fazia o melhor toucinho do céu, nunca comi nada igual.

I know from school that Portuguese is the very first European that arrived and influence us on many dish like Foi Thong, but I never knew that there are still a Portuguese town. Their 23 and Me results would be really diverse.

@@iskisenna no 'L' is used in Portuguese, although modifications where frequent as translations of christian names between diferent languages. The british might have left you with the spanish version

​@@OTRontheroad Afonso and Alfonso both have same Latin origin Alphonsus, which on the other end, came from Germanic word Athalfuns that means Warrior.

This is the Thailand I want to see its so interesting . Forget all those party tourist spots this is Thailand history and there is plenty more that needs to be explored.

Portuguese here! I'm always stunned by how we managed to go so far and influence so many people around the world, whilst being such a small country! This resilience is still part of our soul and seeing Portuguese culture so much present in these communities brings me such a sense of happiness

It's funny that I have the same thought, I heard this story about...one of the city in Burma celebrates Hindu festival because during it was under Siam control, our King appointed Indian/Hindus as a ruler over that city. I am sure you also know about our royal Russian descendant like พระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าจุลจักรพงษ์ too Seem like us Thai are more opened and willing to adjust than our neighbors, and result shows !! because pre-colonial era, Siam is pretty much rules these regions. Some how we are slow to adapt with our current governance LOL meritocracy always rules though !

I love when you mix history with food!. Remembering old Portuguese dishes on an island in Macao (I guess it is now no longer an island having been reclaimed for the airport). In the last cafe with the fermented rice noodles, I saw a dish that looked like a quiche of some sort at 15:50 or so. Curious about that one.

So that's the one they claim as their own invention...it's basically brioche (but the softer Thai-style) with spinach and cheese. Tastes like a not-insubstantial amount of butter under all of that, too. I mean...it's not earth-shaking, but that combination of ingredients is always going to be beyond acceptable in any form

I'm a Low-Tech one , just hop on Choa Phraya taxi boat (the orange flag) to the end of Northern Route , walk straight from Nonthaburi Pier , Talaad Non is on the right hand side , ask for Khanom Khai Mea Nite , the booth always busy due to the whole sale unit..

What on earth are you talking about regarding Malacca?! It was NEVER part of Ayuthia but an independent Sultanate and SE Asia's premier entreport which had been kept safe (against enemies like Ayuthia and Majapahit) due to close relations with Ming China (the global super power then). The Portuguese wanted to colonise Malacca in order to control this trade and have first mover's advantage over costly spices.

I think you missed the meaning. Sorry if not clear from my side. As you clearly know- there were endless battles for the territory (which was never an Ayutthaya colony- of course) but at the time stated here, there was an Ayutthaya trading port with a Siamese garrison at Malacca. That's what I mean by "the reach of the empire". Then it was ransacked by the Portuguese in 1511.

You cannot narrate history in SE Asia pre-colonial age with European POV. Malacca was not a Siamese trading port nor had Siamese garrison. Malacca is Malaccan. Ayutthaya tried to have Malacca pay tributary to. There was a war when Malacca refuse but was repelled with Ming China help. A state can pay tributary to many bigger powers surrounded. That confuses people since the map of empires or kingdoms around here are always overlap due to this. Research: mandala system. Cartography and border were foreign idea.

@@tumma74 Sorry but that's just historically incorrect- this isn't an argument of opinion, it's simply stating the facts of what happened. And I don't appreciate the "European POV". I lived in Sumatra for a long time, which was also a part of the same empire- my "POV" is informed by 1) research and 2) local to the region. "European POV" based on nothing except- what?...is as close to racist as one can get without crossing the line, I suppose. Anyway I appreciate your enthusiasm for the subject. I'll stand by our work on this.

@@OTRontheroad If you're talking about Ayuthia's "reach", then it was via Ligor (today's Nakhon Si Tammarat), and that was during the 100 years prior to Malacca's rise, after which, this Ayuthian representative was repelled including its control of neighbouring Pahang. I highly doubt if Ayuthia had the audacity to station a military garrison during Malacca's peak/"glamour years". A trade representative and commercial relations perhaps but nothing overtly threatening.

fact check: the Spanish never went to war against the "Mayan Empire"
