The Incredible Hidden Design Story of Disneyland's Matterhorn
Walt Disney sent two words back home to Disneyland "BUILD THIS," and he was talking about the Matterhorn at Disneyland. Today we will look at the history, story, and construction/design of the Matterhorn at Disneyland and learn how it changed the history of theme park design and rollercoasters around the globe.

Me too 👏🙌
Always a master of really brining the designer details. Love the 'insider-esque' dives! Favorite part ... "Walt, what are you looking at?" Walt: "My Mountain."
This video will make you love the Matterhorn even more. Thank you, Brickey!
That fun fact of Harold growing weed 🌿no Holiday Hill before Walt built him the Matterhorn to hang out in totally blew my mind 🤯

It was probably for the rope in Fowlers Harbor
Being old, I remember riding the skyride through the Matterhorn. I loved doing that. You could see all the trains racing around the tracks inside. I was bummed when they took out the skyride and closed the mountain on both sides. But it sill is a vivid memory.
What a great deep dive into a great DL exclusive OG. 🙌 up for The Matterhorn and this video!
I love this history lesson! You are amazing at this type of content!!
One of my fav quotes is quite fitting for this video; “Good design is actually a lot harder to notice than poor design, in part because good designs fit our needs so well that the design is invisible” - Donald A. Norman
This episode is BALLER! Seriously. Your passion, eye, Design, and history inspire me to new depths. Would love to see more content like this! YES. Monorail! I'll show up for sure.
I loved this vlog so much! I enjoy hearing your design perspective inside the parks! Please do a monorail one! I would love to watch that one!😊👍🏻👍🏻
Love your videos- Thank you! You always skillfully give insight into how Walt ( a genius!) and the imagineers created the magic - but you do it by adding to the magic- not exposing it in a way that ruins the effect/ fun for us ❣️
This is EXACTLY the content I'm here for. I love the design aspect of Disneyland (and everything, for that matter). You break it down so well and use great storytelling to give us the history as well. Keep it coming, Brickey. These viewers (my husband and i) love it!
Loved this!!! One of my earliest childhood memories is of the Matterhorn. First trip to Disneyland was when I was 4 yo. I remember standing on the seat of our family car, ( No seatbelt) Driving on the free way, looking out the window and seeing the Matterhorn for the first time and was so excited because that is when my parents said, "We are going to Disneyland". I could feel the magic from that very moment. I will never forget it.
Thank you Brickey for making this video. My grandfather was involved in building the Matterhorn and now that he has passed I have something that will always remind me of him in my favorite place to be.
Yes I’ll show up for your co tent!!
Building greatness
I remember when I was a little kid my sister and I would look for the top of Matterhorn Mountain over on the 57 freeway on our way from Arizona. When we saw the mountain, we knew that we were almost to Disneyland.
Loved this episode! The fact that I got to spend 2 - 3 weeks repelling down the Matterhorn every night designing an illusion for a special event made me love it so much more. Having lunch up there just savoring the experience was a dream come true. Thank you for so much history on this remarkable installation!
Chef’s Kiss, as always. Have a great week!
Fascinating! Bring on the monorail!

Hi hundred percent want to see a video about the history of the monorail! I always enjoy going on the monorail in Seattle
This is why you’re my favorite Disney KZreadr.
I can’t begin to tell you how much I love this video. The Matterhorn opened on my dads birthday in 1959. I rode it with my dad about three weeks after it opened so it has a very special place in my heart. Somewhere in this universe there is a picture of my dad and me sitting on holiday hill. (No, we didn’t know that was a pot plant). Can you imagine riding a hallow Matterhorn? Well, I did. It is, and has always been, my favorite ride. I’ve been on it at least once a year since it’s opening. (You do the math). Even knee surgery couldn’t keep me off. Thank you for making this video. I have to admit, I shed a few tears while watching it.
Love this Disney design vlog! As a fellow creative part of my love for Disney is it’s creative problem-solving to tell a story and make it blend flawlessly into the park. Thank you for making this. I’ll be back for more!
i'll be waiting for that monorail video ♥
Cool show. Fun back story. I’d like to see what you could do with Knott’s berry farm 🎭🤠👍
7:11 I love that fun fact 🌿🌿🌿
I’ll be there.
Appreciate the dedication to the work and how you craft it! Wonderfully cut and love all the different vantage points of the Matterhorn while you talk to us… excellent job. As a kid in the 70s my parents had a friend in Texas who’s dad had something to do with designing the air brakes on the ride…
“Some imagination huh!!” LOVE IT ❤️ Adam 🇦🇺
I think the Monorail would be cool. Especially the history.
I love hearing the stories behind the experience. Thanks for sharing your passion for Disneyland.
Brickey this is another love letter to Walt & Disneyland. Thank you and keep them coming!
Such a great video! Interesting, and very well done!
I remember when it opened there was a water splashdown on only one side, a few years later there was one on each side.
YESSSSSS! I've been waiting for this one Brickey!!! The Mattahorn is my favorite attraction at Disneyland not because of it's thrills though it is an amazing experience and Harold 2.0 the best animatronic jump scare lol. It's my favorite because it's history and being a landmark. Shout out to the Imagineering team on this beauty and paving the way for steel coasters across the world! As they say in Disney " It all started with a mouse!" Well in the world of steel coaster thrills " It all started with a Disney Mountain!" Thanks as always Brickey for shedding light on something most people would have never known to be of such importance to Disney Parks History!
Great video Brickey! This is right in your zone. Keep it up.
Let’s be honest, the matterhorn is not long for this world! I think they need to rebuild it. Of course expand the footprint and make an even bigger mountain. This is what Disney MUST do. They could NEVER NEVER NEVER get rid of the matterhorn it’s 100% iconic to the Disneyland park!
Bring on the Monorail 😊
Definitely would watch one on the monorail
A Marijuana field on the Matterhorn?! Interesting! Lol Really enjoy learning new things about Walts original park!
Boy these clearances on the matterhorn are small!! It literally looks like people are gonna whack their heads on the mountain! The tight spaces also increase the thrill level on a pretty slow roller coaster.
It’s videos like this that make me love Disneyland even more!! Thank you 🙏🏼
Great to hear the original story of the Matterhorn, thanks Brickey, keep them coming 👍
Brickey!.. Quality time and research!… Fascinating history and many intriguing and fun trivia tidbits and engineering details. For me, Walt Disney and Miichaelangelo are two of a kind!…
Really informative video Brickey! Matterhorn is the one roller coaster at Disneyland that I can stomach! Would love to hear all about the monorail.
Awesome video! Your attention to detail is unmatched! The editing and narration is outstanding! I really enjoyed it! I'm looking forward to the monorail video!
And yes please on the Monorail!
Fun video, I wonder what 13yr old Brickey would think if he knew he’d be making educational videos as an adult ? If you didn’t tell him they were in So Cal lol. It was great seeing the framework of the mountain. You can see the structural load bearing beams and the smaller beams to hold the facade. Seeing the wheel mechanics up close was great too. It really gives an appreciation for all they had to do to make the Matterhorn. Can’t wait to see what you work on next. I also like how your filming style is evolving, getting a few shots from farther away. Keep up the great work !
Great video Brickey! I learned some stuff I didn't know. 👍
Monorail History would be a welcome video
I love these deep dive videos so much! Would LOVE one on the Monorail! Thanks, Brickey!!
My favorite chiropractor/ride! Thank you so much for this fun video!
I wish the Matterhorn had more of those artificial pine trees going up the mountain to give it more sense of forced perspective and life. Just like on the model in the picture with Walt. Your videos are always on another level Mr Brickey. I will show up to watch them. ✌️
Your videos are really well done. Most history videos are like facts read off of a wiki page and they're pretty common. But really like your storytelling, how you connect the present to the past, how it came to be and why it's still relevant or impactful today. Like the other mountains being set lower or all the little stories and decisions that led to the building of Matterhorn. Thank you for making these history videos because they are excellent.
I absolutely love your content and the way you present it to us. I often put Disney Vlogs on while doing other things - but yours always grab my attention enough that I just sit and watch (and I”m Autistic/ADHD so that isn’t easy) . More of this! More of the documentary style! More Brickey!
Yep. Im here for it. You do it so well. I can never get enough Disney design history.
There is a basketball court inside the Matterhorn as any building over so many stories had to have an athletic center
I can't tell you how much I love your videos! They remind me of Wonderful World of Color from when I was a kid!
❤️ this and you my friend!!! Love your love and history for Disneyland And Walt. Now I wanna rope drop Matterhorn and take in that beautiful masterpiece. Thanks again my friend, keep up the amazing content.
Wow, great story ! Keep them coming Brickey ! I really enjoyed the history in this one. 😁
Great behind the scenes!
I want that Matterhorn postcard that says "Build This!" Where is it? Oh, and a churro, please!
love your details, as someone who has visited Disneyland since I was 5 (now 60), great/interesting information... :)
You are awesome Brickey. This was a great experience to learn more about my favorite ride at Disneyland. Thank you very much and I will always watch your videos because you are very inciteful

This is Disney Adulting... the bearable and useful iteration of Disney Adults. Great video, thank you good sir.
I will for sure show up for a monorail vid!
More, more!

100% here for the niche deep dives!!! as a disney fanatic, i love this kind of content to keep me learning more about disneyland and thinking about design/new concepts. awesome video Brickey!
My favorite kinds of your videos
Thanks Brickey!!! One of your best videos you’ve made. Absolutely loved it👍👊
Another fantastic video!
Great Vlog, def make more. Like many folks here we already know a lot about the parks, etc. but I learned some NEW info here (why the other “mountains” are lower). Lots of fun!
Great Vlog . Do them and I will watch them . Love the creative side of old Disneyland when they where writing the books on theme park construction and design
I really enjoyed this video you did on the Matterhorn, I would to see you do a video on the submarines , I’m so curious how the track runs
Very Cool! But no mention of the Skyway? :) Would love a deep dive into the Monorail! Thanks!
😀😀😀 More design info pleas
That horse, I think, is Val. She’s the fastest horse at the park and the trollies move at the pace of the horses choosing.
Love this video! Thank you for making it. The matterhorn is my favorite ride💖
Love this kind of content, especially your take, which is a perfect blend of Disney Fan, Behind The Scenes, Insider Info, Historian, and Designer. Just like the Galaxy’s Edge Bldg, Keyholes, DCA Expansions, keep ‘em all coming! Thanks as always …
Another kick-ass deep dive. I always learn something new.
Loved this video! Can't wait to watch the next one!
Love all of this information
Commenting for support of more amazing videos like this! You are the only Disney KZreadr that I have followed consistently. Found you (and others) in 2020, and have watched you religiously since.
