This Spanish director J Bayona, is very good, I'm surprised how well he made the Tsunami scene, it looks real or made with miniatures and using real water, I guess from a big tank, because I don't notice CGI in the scene. Or they built the set near some dam and diverted the water into the set and flooded it, because it looked so real.

This same director releases on streaming on January 4th: "Society of The Snow", on a similar theme to this movie, about a true story of a plane crash in the middle of the Andes Mountains, whose survivors spent 72 days isolated and surviving as best they could, it is a very well known story. Put it on the list, because it is getting very good reviews.

Yeah, this his first breakout roll that gave holland a taste of fame! Though, The Impossible was not his first film he worked as a voice actor for the English dub for the film Arrietty which was his actual debut in the film world. His first role however was in the west end as Billy Elliot.

Fun fact: and interview with the real family... they were asked how realistic the movies details were and the biggest change they noticed right away was the color of the ball they all played with in the beginning... apparently the real ball was yellow. That's what they considered inaccurate in this movie! Crazy.

There is a reason the director chose the color yellow for the ball. As for the real family, they were on set to advise the director. They were amazed by how accurate the entire film was with regard to their experience, down to the very details of where they were around the pool when the tsunami hit. I suggest you read more than one article to get accurate news about the real family at the center of this movie rather than relying on one quote taken by a reporter to add controversy, as the media often does.

its funny kinda that McGregor and Watts are the two leads but this is actually an absolute powerhouse performance by young Tom Holland.... what a performance, when i saw this first time in 2013 i knew right away this kid would do big things.

Felt the same way after seeing this. He is also good opposite Chris hemsworth in 1000 leagues under the sea, and his recent works Spider-Man obviously but also opposite Robert Pattinson in a Netflix film which escapes my memory at the moment

I was living in Banda Aceh, North Sumatra in 2004 when this tsunami hit. In the aftermath I saw things no one should ever see. My family thought I was dead because I was unable to contact them for 5 days after the area was devastated. There were dead bodies everywhere, on the streets, in the trees, under rubble. There were people searching for loved ones, but the most depressing thing I saw was an old man, pushing a cart with the bodies of his family. That affected me and still does to this day. I learned to enjoy everyday because tomorrow is really never guaranteed.

As a diverse fan of various genres, there are tons of movies I’d like to see get more attention from reactors; many of which have little to no reactions present on KZread. So if one of them is not as popular like The Impossible that go viral among channels, I’m all for that.

I'm a grown man and the first time I watched this movie I had to pause it and go outside three times. Also something that is often overlooked but has been mentioned numerous times by survivors is how the locals responded and did everything they could to help people. They'd lost their homes, loved ones and entire communities had been wiped out but many of them dedicated their time to helping tourists and each other.

I have personally lived this nightmare when I was 5 I’m now 24! It happened in 2004 Indonesia .. my parents where born there (I was born in the Netherlands) but we we’re on a vacation just like the family in the movie! I still have scars and remaining damage to my back mostly and the visuals in my head! So my first time I watched this movie with my parents it was A lot I can say the least! I loved ya’lls reaction to the movie and the things that happened. Edit: Just a little thing about my story:we were in the ocean on a boat behind the wave and got dragged onto land where I lost my eldest sister my aunt and 2 cousins during the tsunami! I got swept out of the boat by the second wave and was found 16 hours later and had been in a coma for 5 months! My parents where somewhat okay only bruised and cut by debris. And further I don’t remember much but when any of y’all have questions I will try to answer them as much as I can!

I vividly remember when this happened. It was horrifying and heartbreaking as we got little bits of news at a time as it was happening. So many heartbreaking stories. I remember how they said the bays actually went empty before the wave hit as the water was drawn into the wave. Some lifeguards noticed and were able to warn people to get a higher elevation. I can’t imagine what the experience was like first hand. Survivor stories are what makes it bearable so thanks for sharing yours!

So true, we noticed some of those little details in the editing process!

The behind the scenes is very interesting. If I'm not mistaken they had survivors from that incident as extras and the family was involved in the making of the film, I know Maria met Naomi and was there on set a couple of times. Lucas studied medicine because he never wanted to have that helpless feeling of not understanding the name of medicine to help his mom.

When I was in grade 11, one of my classmates and her family was in Thailand on the beach when the tsunami hit. All 4 of them got washed in different directions and it took them days to find each other, and they spent 3 days thinking their dad was dead and looking for his corpse amongst the piles of dead bodies. They were lucky though in that they were one of the few families where everyone survived, although they were injured & traumatized. They were so grateful to the Thai people who were so wonderful and helped them despite losing everything themselves. They watched this movie and said it was accurate to how it felt, and very well done. Every year since they go to Thailand on holiday because the Thai economy needs tourism money, and they want to repay the Thai people as much as they can for their kindness.

@@EmyN it really was a miracle, and they know how lucky they were to have all survived as most of the families around them lost people. For us back at home, my classmates & I were all watching the news with horror because we knew her and her family were in Thailand at the time and nobody knew if they were ok. Finally after 2 days they managed to send a text to a family member back home, who spread the word around. But for those 2 days all of us thought the whole family was wiped out.

This January 4, Spanish director J Bayona premieres La Sociedad de la Nive on Netflix. Another incredible feat of survival. I saw it in the cinema, Bayona is the master of intimacy and realism. The story of the rugby team that fell in the Los Anfes Mountain Range. This movie was among my top 5 ever. The Impossible was difficult to see because I was in Chile at that time and we had also recently suffered a Tsunami, it is an excellent film!!

I had a friend who was in Thailand when it happened. Him and his family were on the 10th floor of the hotel they were staying at. They all survived

Oh my god! I am so sorry to hear about your friend and his family, but I'm glad they survived. It's just awful what happened...

This is such a bittersweet ending scene in the airplane, especially since it's based on the real experiences of the survivors. I'm glad that the family survived, but at the same time the note that says "We are at the beach"... the gentleman who helped reunite them likely lost his wife and his little daughter, like so many survivors have lost loved ones. And those children who were with Simon and Thomas, who knows what's in store for them! And the locals, the hospital staff, I'm still amazed at their kindness toward the tourist victims despite their own pain and desperation to know that their families are safe. I can't begin to imagine what this family thought in the middle of this waking nightmare. They were incredibly lucky to survive!

i dont remember if it was true or not, but last i saw comments saying the man who lent the dad the phone and helped, his wife was the lady coughing up blood next to the mom

Finland's current president was there with his sons. They hung on to an electric pole for a couple of hours and waited for the water to pull back. Can't believe it will be 20 years this year.

Tom Holland's big movie debut. What a stunning child performance....up there with the very best.

For whoever is interested. I am from Spain. The real family on which the movie was based is perfectly fine today. And Lucas, the eldest son, graduated as a doctor and is active in his profession.

@@krashdhe did act before The Impossible, but on stage, he played Billy Elliot in Billy Elliot the Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London, and I watched him there 3 or 4 times and it was clear to all of us fans of BETM how amazing an actor he was and we were so happy he got this part.

Watching the actual footage from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami is heart breaking. So many people didn't know what was happening and thought it was kind of cool to stand around when the water went out to sea. Having no idea that it would come back to shore with a vengeance.

One of my favourite moments in this film is when Ewan's character uses the phone and breaks into tears while he's trying to talk: I love a good on-screen cry and the pain and emotion he displays here are sublime and powerful.

It didn't make it into your edit but the one line that broke me in this film is when Henry finally reunites with Maria right before her surgery, she asks him "Am I dead?". She thought because she was with her husband and boys again that she had died. Such and emotional film. Well done reaction you guys!

For me, the scariest aspect of this tragedy is that the earthquake happened far out to sea. Very few, if anyone knew what was coming. Loving your videos. 👍👍

May the 227,898 people who passed away find peace. I believe there really was a man that gave the dad his phone and sadly found out his wife and children died. This tsunami hit about 12 countries on two different continents (4 in Africa, 8 in Asia) and many other countries around the world felt the impact due to civilian loss. Sweden had the worst off in terms of vacation guests who were killed with around 548 dead, Germany with 539 dead, Finland with 179 dead, the UK with 143 dead, and Switzerland with 113 dead; were the most affected overseas countries in terms of loss of population. It’s so sad

2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami - Casualties 227,898 dead. I don't think authorities really know the real toll. But what is certain, the trauma and devastation to all people affected by it, cannot be measured. Yet, the strength and endurance of the human spirit cannot be matched by anything. Incredible! ⭐

This film is truly devastating. I am glad Naomi Watts was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for this. Tom Holland really deserved all of the wins he got for Best Actor. Wonderful reaction!

This whole movie is spectacular, the shot at the end of the dad opening the note from the other survivor and it being the last note he had from his wife and daughter completely broke me. I remember when the tsunami happened, even being a young kid in Australia it had a big impact on me and I’ve never forgotten the stories. I can’t even imagine 💔

This movie was far more scarier than any horror movies hollywood puts out. By the way, Ewan Mcgregor and Naomi watts are dream parents.

This movie is incredible. The beginning is so stressful because you know it's going to happen you just dont know when you're always on edge. Also the full circle when she told her son that was afraid to sleep at the beginning to "close his eyes and think of something nice" being the same thing the doctor/nurse told her at the end is beautiful.

Interesting movie choice. For me, it's not the movie...it's the actual ordeal that this family went through and was lucky enough to survive. All of them. Truly blessed family.

Everybody was crying in the theater. This film was gripping just the family dynamic and what they went through. Loved Tom holland in this, the rest of the cast was great as well.

El director Juan Antonio Bayona es maravilloso, viene del cine del terror y sabe dar el ambiente para tenerte siempre metido en tensión pero además de ser una persona sensible y comprometido con las historias que cuenta que siempre tiende a ser lo mas parecido a lo que pasó en realidad y hacerte sentir lo que sienten los personajes. I'm sure others have mentioned this, but you should check out the Behind-the-scenes of this. The way they made it was incredible. And, in the one I watched, the real Maria is shown chatting with Naomi. I can't imagine how hard it must've been to relive some of those situations. I remember when I first saw it, Tom Holland wasn't on my radar, but afterwards, I thought...he's gonna be really great! I couldn't wait to see him in something else. Then, a few years later, when they announced him as Spider-Man, I was so happy!!

It was just a given that at some point Hollywood would make a movie about this tsunami. There is no way they wouldn't make one. When I heard it was in the making I was really concerned that it would be one of those action flicks with a heroic guy who somehow saves the day. Instead, they made a really great movie, with characters that you feel for, a compelling (true) story, and absolutely phenomenal acting. They somehow managed to capture the scale of this tragedy by looking at one family. This is how Hollywood should be.

But it's not a Hollywood movie, it's a Spanish movie with an international cast. The director is Spanish (Catalan, like me), the writer, music, cinematography, edition, production...it was also mostly filmed in Spain. It happens to have an internacional cast and it was distributed by Warner Bros, that's all.

People who survived this, said this is as close to reality as it can. A lot of people get PTSD and terrifed from open water for a lifetime :( Sad part the the academy and every other major awards show only nominated Naomi (who btw is absolute worth it), no other respect for the movie, the young Tom Holland, the and so on. This move show'd us what it is like to be in a real life catastrophe as it is, no fuss, no Hollywood BS. All I remember when I saw first Naomi's leg from behind as the kid....jesus.

This movie so amazing! They actually worked with some survivors during the filming to make sure there was accuracy. I did a couple of TikTok’s comparing actual footage & shots from the film & honestly, this movie is hands down one of the best recreations of a historical event (when it comes to natural disasters). It was beautifully done 😭 This event was truly horrific

this is such a powerful and true story, it does truly seem impossible they all survived. The filmmakers and director took such care and respect in retelling this awful event, its a bloody shame the studio marketed it in cinemas without any warnings, leading to 1000s of people getting hit with the trailer with no warning and that sound design. I was in a screening of another film when the trailer was shown and a man and his daughter left in distress. I liked how the end of the film showed the destruction left behind and how even though the family we followed escaped, the lives of 100s of 1000s of people were changed forever and they were left to pick up the pieces and carry on somehow

I used to live in Hawaii and every first of the month, the tsunami warning sirens are tested. In school we used to have tsunami warning drills. We’re lucky to have time before any waves from major earthquakes or volcanic eruptions around the Pacific Ocean, while some places will only have minutes. Once the sea recedes that quickly, run as fast and as high as you can.

If I’m not mistaken, Lucas ended up reuniting more than 70 families in the hospital, and he is now a doctor. Thomas and Simon are also certified lifeguards. The whole family advocates for more tsunami awareness.

The old lady who talks about stars is Geraldine Chaplin, Charles Chaplin's daugther. You can see her in The Orphanage, a horror movie also directed by Bayona.

Naomi is often overlooked when thinking about great Australian actors, but she is definitely one of the best. Absolutely loved her in Mulholland Drive also, I thought that performance was definitely worthy of winning the Oscar, which she was nominated for.

You have to watch Society of the Snow too, its also made by J. Bayona, the same director. You'll love it.

That scene as the wave hits and the dad and Tom Holland are trying to get away could only be filmed once think this film is a masterpiece. I watched the real families story after this and learned that the mother was on set for most of the making of the movie as they wanted as true to their real story as possible

Some people compare this with the movie "Alive" because they are both based on the same events, but I can assure you they are not the same movie, as they are made from completely different points of view.

Whew! I almost didn't watch your reaction because I was traumatized watching the movie initially. My anxiety was off the charts and being an avid traveller, this is a realistic fear. I worked for a major airline and have had to handle phone calls of people inquiring about their loved ones, after a fatal air crash. The number of people affected by tragic events is incredibly long. Lucas is the true hero of this story. He is the catalyst, the main protagonist and the glue that found and saved his family. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor are fantastic in their roles, but Tom Holland’s portrayal of Lucas is one of the best acting performances in modern film. He should’ve at the very least been nominated for an Oscar. Another fantastic filmmaker’s film you should not miss is Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Black Stallion.” Such a beautifully shot movie directed by Carroll Ballard (“Fly Away Home” and “Never Cry Wolf”), starring Kelly Reno as a young boy who befriends a horse.

This movie breaks me like nothing else. I don’t know if it’s having three kids with similar age gaps myself, but Omg. I’m a mess every time.

Oh wow!! I've never seen anyone react to this. And it's so freaking awesome. The cinematography, the truth of it... but these performances!!! They knocked it out the park. I was in kindergarten when this happened. It was during the holidays and my best friend, who is Thai, went to Thailand to visit her family. She was extremly lucky with the location they were in so that none of her relatives were seriously injured, however her grandparents entire property was destroyed.

BASED ON REAL FAMILY WHO SURVIVED!!!! DEBRIS IS WHAT KILLS OR INJURES.

I remember when this happened. I was home for Christmas at my parent's home. So devastating. And then some of before and after aerial pictures of like Banda Aceh that basically wiped of the map along other places. Over 250,000 people killed. What a impossible to comprehend tragedy.

This my first time watching you guys channel, I love your reaction and commentary to this movie. I cried all over again watching this. I think y'all would truly enjoy watching the movie The Society Of The Snow. It's a true story about group of boys who survive a plane crash in the andes mountain during the winter time for 72 days. It is a foreign film in Spanish so keep that in mind. It's one of the best movie I've ever seen. Great choice of movie to react to. Can be a tough watch at times though with the graphic injuries on show. That scene with Ewan Mcgregor making the phone call was absolutely heartbreaking which is testament to his talent as an actor. Loving your work as always both.

I was born into a situation like this and abandoned in the woods during the chaos. I still have-not reunited with my family. I was too little to remember anything, like their names. They probably think I'm dead.

I had your video lined up for a few days because I didn't have the time to watch. I'm glad I waited because I cried with you two. Such incredible performances! Love you guys. Something I didn't compliment you on before: your empathy. True human beings you are.

This movie is amazing. A little girl was on the beach with her family and recognised the signs of a tsunami, that she learned a week earlier in school. It saved her whole family. I’m sure u have already seen it but ARMAGEDDON is a great movie. Also THE CORE is one of the best “disaster” movies I have seen. The acting in all 3 of the movies is just amazing and portray all the emotions felt.

The older actress telling the story of the stars and how some of them were dead but there wasn't any way to tell is Geraldine Chaplin, the daughter of the legend Charlie Chaplin.

Amazing observation about secondary characters that usually takes writers years to figure out (see mark 30:15 ) "they're not lazily used as a subplot [..] but to tell a different part of the story". I'm stealing this. Also: great reaction.

The production team for this film was predominantly from another great Spanish film called The Orphanage. Great, great film of you have a chance to watch it. Highly recommend.

The crazy thing is, the real Lucas helped many (I think 73) people to find their missing loved ones in the hospital

After the movie the real mother said "The ball was not red. The rest of it was accurate.".

Thank you for reacting to this great film! I remember watching the horror of it on national news and new video and info would keep coming out. I can't even imagine going through such a disaster - especially for the local people who live there as they would have literally lost everything. I remember the story of a pretty famous model and her boyfriend were vacationing right at that resort when it hit. She ended up in the top of a tree with severe injuries that she barely survived. Her boyfriend, a well-known fashion photographer, unfortunately died. So many stories of heartbreak. Thank you for your great reactions. You are two of my favorites as you make helpful comments and you get INTO the film. Some other reactors are joking at inappropriate times (like say during the tsunami hitting) and I get so annoyed, I stop following them. Thanks for taking the films seriously.

My landlord on vacation left the day before ...She brought me a bamboo umbrella from the hotel she was staying at which was destroyed..Nate Burkes celebrity designer was there with his partner.. Nate survived his partner did not.. Petra ? a famous model survived barely, holding onto a tree.. her boyfriend did not ...she said in an interview that she saw this family in the movie that day or the day before...Read about their stories..

I think it was in the documentary 20 days in Mariupol someone said that in a crisis situation/ catastrophe good people become even better and bad (or selfish) people even worse. That thought really stayed with me, it's probably pretty true. Fun fact: the lady the little brothers are with around 30:00 is Geraldine Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin's daughter. Her daughter is also an actress, Oona Chaplin (known for Game of Thrones).

I hope you guys react to Society of the Snow, made by the same director J.A Bayona, is such an emotional movie!

This is one of the most overwhelming movies I've ever seen. I'm usually able to hold it together, but there were multiple scenes that I just couldn't control the tears

This was filmed pretty close to me, in the Alicante area, i’m 60 miles north of Alicante. I remember the advertisement for extras. It’s actually about a spanish family Maria and Enrique and their children. I always find it hard to watch true disaster movies. World Trade Centre with Nicolas Cage is another (had to stop it 4 times to break away from it) Amazing reaction again guys

The kids man, the kids are amazing in this film 🥺 the fact that we never know what happened to that guy who losed his family in the beach will always hurt me 😣

As other comments said, you guys need to react to La sociedad de la nieve/ Society of the snow!!. Is another movie from the same director and based on a true story. Is on Netflix but unlike this one, Society of the snow is in Spanish so you need to watch with subtitles, dubbed takes away part of the emotion.

I appreciate how emotionally open you guys are so I'm not here crying alone! 😭 I've loved this movie for years and after Society of the Snow Bayona is one of my top favorite directors. You can tell how connected he is emotionally to these incredible, harrowing experiences, how much he respects and loves the human spirit. I hope he makes more true survival stories into movies, he just gets it!

This movie is so heart breaking.

This was my recommendation all the way back on the Twister reaction I think it was. I am so glad to see this reaction. I saw it in theaters with my roommates when it first came out and the whole theater was aubilby sobbing. I wish more people watched this movie. Every performance is great. Over a quarter of a million people lost in this absolutely terrible tragedy. I still remember watching this on the news as it unfolded. It is one of those events that has stuck with me.

One of my favorite movies! I love the little boys, the acting, the makeup, the sets, and especially the music. It's so underrated. They did a really good job.

The moms injuries are the only time i ever looked away in a movie theater. Its just so brutal

Yes they did flood the entire set and Naomi and Tom were put into chair under water that spun around to give the effects of them twirling and getting hit

The tsunami scene, the almost miss seeing the love one (hospital) made me stomp my feet, get up from my seat, face palmed lol. So beautifully, technically done.

This movie is the one and only movie that has caused me to run out of the room multiple times and come back only to run away again. Definitely the most stressful film I've ever watched. It was also what helped me to realize just how horrifying tsunamis really are.
