I would have loved for Gohan to become more of the main hero after Cell saga... but it's in character for him not to like fighting or be the true fighter's example. He does what he must, but it's traumatic and horrible everytime for him. He's already a good boy, the best boy, the fights don't make him a better person, just a more emotionally wounded person who deserves better. Also, to lose Goku completely after Cell saga would be awful, he's kind of the glue that holds everything together. As much as I adore Gohan and Vegeta both, I can't imagine continuing without Goku.

Personally I'm in with the 'They're moving in bullet time' type theory. Simply put, Goku already demonstrated a capacity to move faster than any of the other fighters could see in his fight with Jace and Burter. Amplify that by a zenkai boost, and then amplify that 100 times more by super saiyan, and you have a person moving so fast that he can likely circle the planet in the time it takes you to blink; And fight at speeds at least close to that. Five minutes when you can perceive, move and fight like that is an eternity. ..Plus it doesn't help that frieza's attack was meant to blow up the planet outright, and when it failed to do so, Frieza could have just been bluffing or guessing about exactly how long it would take.

You're conflating the issue of waiting with the concept of filler. I don't have a problem waiting for the important bits if I feel like the road to those points is somehow relevant, but if the journey isn't going to have any kind of impact on the destination, then it's just a waste of time.

Yes, filler and waiting are not the same, but one thing is an entire filler arc , which i believe everyone agrees is a waste of time. Another thing is adding bits here and there that spice things up at the end of the arc/battle

This is why I can't fully get behind "It's not the destination, it's the journey" as a writing principle for long-form storytelling. I hate One Piece, for many reasons, but chief among them is the fact that although it lays out its goal at the start, it may never actually get there for whatever reason. Both the creator and the characters seem not to actually care about the destination at all, which is fine on its own, but don't give us an untrue motivation. Adventure for adventure's sake can work, but don't lie to us.

@@sonnywoods6846 Goku died twice not to protect his family, but because he failed to put his priorities in order. His "sacrifice" against Raditz was because he gave pity to someone who didn't deserve it and did not nothing to earn it. His decision to grant Raditz mercy resulted in him having his Ribs fractured and the loss of a tactical fighting advantage. Goku's "sacrifice" wasn't for his family, it was for a desperate victory resulting in him committing an easily avoidable suicide. His second "Sacrifice" was the result of his Friend and Best Dad Piccolo having to explain and reveal to Goku how awful of a father that Goku is. Goku willingly gave Cell a senzu bean which only made Cell stronger and is also the reason why almost everyone else died trying to fight cell. The fight against cell could have ended much sooner if Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Gohan, and everyone else had continued to fight Perfect Cell and continue to weaken him. As it stands, Perfect Cell was already heavily weakened and tired after the equal bout that both Goku and Perfect Cell had against each other. In the end, Goku is and always will be terrible father, Even Akira Toriyama knows this.

Whenever I talk about how much I like dragon ball for its story or plot, I inevitably get people telling me that I'm just a delusional fanboy who gives to much credit to a kids show about men who shoot laser beams from their hands. I think these are the kinds of people you're talking about, who think that dragon ball is just about the payoff moments. They don't get that dragon ball, while certainly not the best or most innovative in terms of story telling, is fantastic at communicating scale and has a pretty strong story, and THAT is what makes the payoff scenes so great.

I agree with the basis of your argument, but I don't agree with the point that "all waiting" is worth it. Snake Way and other 'filler' were great world building moments. Gohan going alone as a kid in his own adventure while trained by Picollo was great to develop Gohan. However, The tournament of Powers padding didn't really serve this purpose as well. We really didn't learn much of anything about their home universes. Most characters were one note. We saw the characters feel about their fellow competitors deaths and the next episode it was as if nothing happened. Thats the difference here.

The issues with that has less to do with his point and more to do with the (should be known) fact that super had immense writing issues. A bunch to do with there pre production and the fact that it wasn't give. Enough time to work itself out. That's why things were built up but then just casted away because it was almost always a different set writers writing each episode.

I feel like there's a difference in "waiting" for a character arc to come to fruition for that big, memorable scene (a path already carved by the manga) and "waiting" through filler episodes added to the anime. Gohan's SS2 transformation is big and impactful not because of him saving the kids on the island in those filler episodes of him training with Piccolo, but because of those memorable big moments that come before. Quiet, crying Gohan exploding to attack Raditz. Nervous, scared Gohan in the face of Frieza flying into a rage. Etc. Waiting through 4(?) arcs for Vegeta's payout works because of all of the set pieces before it. Those "big, flashy set pieces" are what build up to the BIGGER payout. Not the added filler scenes that don't hurt the overall story by being removed. If I were to just read the manga, would my experience of these big payout moments is diminished? The manga doesn't include the specific periods of waiting you outlined, so by that logic the payout is less impactful because of it. TL;DR I agree that waiting through arcs that contain memorable set pieces for these main characters to get to their big payouts down the line is important, but waiting through filler episodes is waiting for the sake of... just waiting.

  • @gameraz1990

    @gameraz1990

    5 жыл бұрын

But think about this: If a manga issue that holds the "ultra big payoff" comes out, do hundreds of people host reading parties to read those... 20~ pages? No. Those pages are done in mere moments, leaving you with your imagination to enjoy what "could have been" an epic scene, where it to be animated, voiced, colored and masterfully acted. On the contrary, when a show's big climatic payoff comes along, people all over the world get excited for those final 20 minutes of an episode that summarizes every single episode you've been seeing for the past, say, 1 year (52 episodes). And also, like he said, the fact that you waited so long (years maybe) is what gets you excited to see the ending. Ever thought about why 12 episodes animes, even while being ultra epic as f***, don't get much attention? Because they end too soon. They don't have this "filler" which makes you wait and "hype up" the ending that'll come later. However, fillers should be in good taste... they should promote character exploration and potential growth, not last for a year+ (Naruto...) and do absolutley nothing but make up a story with the most generic storyline and zero payoff for everyone involved.

i think toriyama is a great artist. i think that he created a high ceiling for power with dbz and super. i think the characters he created physically are cool to watch. BUT, he was extremely poor at exploring rhe potemtial of his own creation. he created great looking villains but they were out of order. he started off with decent increases in power but once piccolo blew up the moon it was pretty much over after that. he got so out of control with strong characters after thar. i think he did poorly deciding which characters deserved the most shine. i think he focused on super sayain transformations too much after ss1. i think had he been more creative ss1 could have had longer longevity. i think he did poorly explaining ki in this series. i think he did poorly distinguishing ki in this series. i think basing a series off of real life ideas of ki and energy was creative but poorly executed.

Darius don't compare Dragon Ball Super trash which throws logic outta water for fanservice like let me compare cell and Zamasu arc for you, both have trunks coming back for help but in one arc trunks despite training in RoSaT doesn't achieve power to kill perfect cell whereas in dbs one he was shown to be weaker than ssj3 and outta nowhere he asspulled his way to become stronger than Vegetto blue and sliced Vegetto? Get that shit outta here. Did you skip the series or what? Toriyama never explored Gohan? Vegeta? Piccolo? Tenshinhan? Goten and Trunks? So you want boo to appear first then freeza then vegeta, because fuck narrative, right? Who tf gives two shit about Powerscaling like dbs trash? Its hilarious that you keep saying power ceiling shit yet you don't have concrete examples, roshi was the one who blew up the moon first and it's fiction, breaking news : we can't blow the moon with our power but with the world established in Dragon Ball it's normal. Oh ye, fuck that Toriyama for making retarded characters like vegeta, piccolo or trunks or Gohan and trying to develop them, i wanted to see chaozu and oolong develop, that's true he should have developed characters like pilaf or mai because fuck developing your main cast, right? Do you realize how ignorant you sound? That's like me saying Oda sucks for having so many people with haki after time skip which is no different than dbz, similar to how earlier on no one can fly but in Z they can. Loooool, this is the funniest part, what pretentious pseudo-scientific explanation you need for ki? Tf? 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 Even a Japanese kindergarten kid knows what Rei and ki are, this isn't Hunter x Hunter, you seem like another one of those elitist who Values the quality and contribution of a story based only on how much new "lore/information" it throws (aka, how many extra words it can be added to a wiki article) over things like themes & ideas, character development, conflict, pathos (which Toriyama puts) the stuff that makes a story...well a story. As someone who started with OG Dragon Ball... I have to agree. Toa Pai Pai has to be my all round favourite villain. Why? Because of everything that transpired before. Dragon Ball used to be a tale of adventure and high jinks. Yes there were battles and what not, but the stakes never felt higher. Should the series have been more about that from the start, Tao would have been lost to me in the succession of villains. I love the build ups when they're available in the series. As you said, watching a character grow and seeing the fruits of their labour makes the climax that much more satisfying. You almost feel you earned it alongside any given character. Everyone hates an asspull, and I believe this is one of those reasons why! It doesn't feel earned. As always, great video man! :D

I couldn't wait for this video to end... ....so I could come below and comment on how damn well and thought out it was! Seriously, I agree with everything you just said! Super was more about power ups and fights than actual story. Problem was that imo DB Super had a lot of great fight scenes but not a lot of great fights. What do I mean? SSB Goku vs. Toppo in the exhibition match, Future Trunks and Goku vs Black and Zamasu just to name a couple off the top of my head. Fights that are only a couple of minutes long but were awesome. However, they don't have that Perfect Cell vs. Goku or Vegeta vs. Kid Buu level of epicness in my opinion. I don't think Super will hold up to the level of success that Z did in terms of STORY and longevity. The T.O.P. arc had some of the best moments in the recruitment stages. They really should've had an entire arc built around the universes getting it together so we'd have some idea of personality for maybe not all but a majority of the fighters so we'd give a damn!

@A.J.R .A Well if fighting was Dragon Ball Z's only appeal than why do DBZ fans hate Super? In Super we complained about the awful story and character development. No one complained about fight scenes. Fights is usually the MAIN appeal of all action anime, cartoons, movies, ect. But fights isn't the only thing most people care about. And using a few plot points that are common (not even done in the same way) in the show and justifying it as the whole plot is just hypocritical. I can do that with pretty much every anime that I saw. Using that logic is like me saying Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho, Jojo's Bizzare Adventure, Full Metal Alchemist, ect have no story. I can take a few things that happens in the show justify it as the entire anime. If DBZ had no story than it wouldn't have a big fanbase. Sure fights are important, but if no one cared about the story and characters, not many people would watch it. If Dragon Ball only had fights to offer you than it wouldn't keep your interest. There are lots of animes with great fight scenes but lots of people that watched them wouldn't say it's good because they didn't enjoy the story. Dragon Ball does have problems but it still have a very entertaining story that contains lots of adventure and excitement. No offense but if you don't care for the story in Dragon Ball, than I doubt you actually love the series. You don't make sense, most of the crisis in Original DB was solved by fucking kid goku, he was one punch man in it among Fodder.

The Haves and the Have Nots Review This man, this man GETS it. And just to emphasize your points: one of my biggest critiques about the ToP is how it completely took a dump on the OG U6 warriors, the only actual new characters in the series besides Whis, Jaco and Beerus who got to know for the past 60 few episodes... for Real. I liked Frost in the ToP, but his manga version was so much cooler(though it didn’t have that glorious Mafuba scene). Botamo...eh fuck him). Megeta was just ok , But HIT and Cabba, two fan favorite characters were completely shafted, Hit just to show how Op Jiren was, hell we didn’t even got that Vegeta vs Jiren rematch or a quick fight, also he should’ve been at least top 12 in the Tournament . But cabba got it the worst, out lil boi got completely side stepped just for Not- Broly and horrible op carsboars character number 01 get the spotlight. He was literally the only U6 saiyan the EARNED and deserved his Ssj and ssj2... so yeah, some foreshadowing or interactions between the Universes before the actual tournament would’ve been good, to build tension and relationships. Too bad they almost completely ignored that with pre existing characters

I agree with your assessment about delayed gratification. The only point of contention I would submit is that the waiting became... a bit formulaic and predictable in DBZ. It wasn’t just waiting. It was “Waiting for Goku.” I get that Goku is the main character of the entire Dragonball franchise and, as such, criticizing Dragonball for keeping him at its center would be like criticizing Spider-Man for keeping Spidey its central focus. I get it. ...buuuuut... Goku gets killed by Piccolo along with Raditz. Uh oh, more powerful Saiyans are coming! Can Goku make it back in time to save his friends?! Will Goku’s training be enough?! Goku gets critically wounded by Vegeta at the end of the Saiyan Saga. We need the Namekian Dragonballs to revive all our lost friends. Uh oh, Frieza is looking for them too! Can Goku make it there in time to save his friends?! Will the training he undergoes on the way be enough to turn the tide?! Goku gets critically injured... again... by Captain Ginyu and has to recover. Uh oh, Frieza’s closing in on the Dragonballs! Will Goku... umm... heal in time to save his friends?! Will he be strong enough to stop Frieza?! Goku suffers a heart attack while fighting Androids 19 and 20. Uh oh, these aren’t the Androids future Trunks warned them about?! The real Androids are way stronger?! Will Goku be able to heal... again... in time to save his friends?! Will Goku be strong enough to stop the Androids?! ...see what I mean? To the show’s credit (and for the record I am very much a fan of the Dragonball franchise), it does make for big heroic moments when Goku does show up, like “ohhhh, y’all’re F-ED NOW, son! Here’s Goku!!!” But again... it gets a little repetitive for my tastes and kind of does a disservice to the also cool, fun, impressive, and compelling roster of supporting characters in the franchise. That, to me, is why the Cell Saga’s outcome left such a lasting impression: Goku wasn’t the one who was going to save the day. The arc was about someone else, and it was really f-ing cool! A very well-executed passing of the torch, so to speak, from father to son. Sign me the hell up! I can’t wait to see where Gohan goes after Cell... ...and then the disappointment set in (I already watched your video about Gohan and I fully agree with your assessment of his character between DBZ and DBS). I was kind of hoping Gohan would become Earth’s mightiest champion, or at least stay in the running along with the other 50 bajillion super saiyans on the show. But nope. Gohan regresses to the point where he’s worth not much more than Krillin in the grand scheme and here comes our boy, Goku, to retake the driver’s seat. Sigh... Don’t get me wrong. I thought the SSG and Ultra Instinct transformations were both handled well (though I do see your point regarding the rather lackluster reveal of SSGSS/Super Saiyan Blue) and I’m not against keeping Goku there as a central figure. I just think they rely a little too much on Goku (and waiting for him) as a plot device, a fact which is exacerbated by all the good stuff they set up with the supporting cast, Gohan in particular and now (as you also pointed out) with Broly. I’m genuinely interested and excited to see where Broly’s story goes in the next season, and hopefully Toriyama will use it to break away from the “waiting for Goku” formula. Well presented video once again, bud! Thanks for posting and keep up the good work! ☺️👍

There is a massive difference between key character moments and silly little side stories that one might consider filler. Kai does not cut out these key moments, only filler that have no impact on story. Though I fully agree that any story benefits from the quiet little moments where we get to know and see the characters grow and connect with one another, because this is what makes then relatable, makes them human. Dragon Ball can certainly overly drag things out, but if was nothing but action it would merely be a flash in the pan with no weight behind the outcomes of the eventual fight scenes.

Funny you bring up WWE. One of the many, many many many many problems with wwe from 2015-2018 is they keep trying to label everything as monumental and historic without EARNING that designation. You can't just simply put a scenario together, tell commentary to spout buzzwords/corporate doctrine over how important this is without the proper build-up and follow through then expect the fans to just go along with it. You have to be prepared book long term, take the fans on a storytelling journey, be prepared to fail sometimes and listen to the fans when they speak, move things in a direction that will engage people, let things happen organically, and don't stifle the creativity of the people who you employ to tell your story. Not every story you make will be popular, not every decision will be celebrated and not every ending will be considered a work of art. Sometimes circumstances will come up and prevent you from telling your story, or your story will not be liked by the fans. But if you craft the journey and focus on telling good stories, they will resonate with people, who will come back for more. People are willing to be patient and see how the story plays out, if they can see that you are trying to craft something good. As soon as you start treating your fans like idiots, you have lost. And the past 5 years have made me and millions of others stop watching wwe entirely and go out and find wrestling and story media that does do the things listed above.

It's honestly more like realife comic books meets sports, where a hero fights a villain (sometimes another hero) to see who comes out on top, with over the top characters and personalities. Of course, there are still damn good Series and all, that are well paced and playing with our expectations; But to be honest: Almost all modern block buster produces fail to hold me tight on the seat, because they choose action over story telling and that is just sad. Unfortunately, that is what people find cool. But at the same time this kind of entertainment, just lacks emotional attachment, which is needed to identify with the world depicted. Ironically: I truly think these days, gamers seem to be the people with the longest span of attention and an urge for a compelling story telling. Taking the time to explore those worlds and dive deep into story telling mechanics. Well, mainly because in the end of the day as a gamer you choose your pacing.

Goku and Future Trunks had by far the best ones, followed by Vegeta and Gohan. Cabbas was super flat, Gohan and Kid Trunks' non existent, same with Kale and Caulifla, and we do not talk about the horrible Bardock one. AVGN actually made a pretty good example in his Frankenstein video years back, where a game talks about the evil he-devil and she-devil of the woods, and you fight them seconds later. No build-up, no nothing. Meanwhile when you play Zelda, you know that you fight ganon, the manual is talking about Ganon, the game is talking about Ganon, but you do not see him until the very end. That's now you make something memorable. It's also why Jiren's backstory falls flat on it's ass because it's a 5 minute flashback way too late that isn't even close to detailed enough to help him in any way.

I feel like super fixes a lot of the issues Z started to have with transformations. Each new one is set up far in advance and is given enough time for excitement to build over seeing it. Particularly for Super Saiyan God, this was set up incredibly well, and built a strong foundation for the rest of the series in terms of the strength of its characters, not to mention the fight following it was well executed and enjoyable to watch. I feel like the anime got more mileage out of it than the film did, however, since in the anime, the form lasted for more than a minute. SSB was also set up fairly well, as the audience is made to wonder how far the two main characters have come in terms of their powers, and they get to see both the logic behind how it works and the payoff that follows in the fight with Frieza, and while the golden form did dunk on how cool SSB was shown to be, it did re-establish Frieza as a threat, and gave a tangible result from the training he did. Ultra instinct is actually hinted at and set up throughout the entire series, even as far back as when Goku and Vegeta were training with Whis, so it is kind of cool to see this translated into something more tangible. This is the only time in super where we see a character suddenly learn a new ability in the middle of battle, however it neatly avoids the problem Z had in that due to the nature of how the ability works, it makes sense that it would trigger in a life-or-death situation like this, there's also some decent buildup with Goku mastering the ability over the course of the tournament, so there's actually something interesting to watch other than some asspull overpowering the main villain.

So bardcok was 100% angry about not being strong enough to be able to defend anyone. He had failed with The Planet Vegeta and the saiyans and Chilled being able to easily wreck that little football head alien kid just reminded him of that even more. As far as Cabba, yeah I can definitely agree, buuuuut Cabba clearly didn’t see Vegeta as “some random dude”, and he knew that if Vegeta wanted he could make U6 saiyans his bitches. Anyway, I see your point and I agree with none of them being memorable (not so much with Bardock) . And the sad thing is that “ssj Rage” trunks would’ve been memorable if they hadn’t created some random form that is not even acknowledged by the other characters and that has 0 explanations (hell it doesn’t even have a canon name) ... instead of, you know, achieved a pre existing transformation like SSJ3 or hell even ssg, idk , just some logic to it would’ve been cool

Otherwise I guess that makes sense with Bardock, but I still think it's a very flaccid super saiyan trigger. Because in that case, it's just him needing one more person he doesn't even care about that much to get hurt. But I guess I just prefer Bardock being a normal saiyan anyway. Made him more special.

It has good concepts as a perfected ssjb and a ss goku black also the fact goku has a weaker version of hakai and the fact that fused zamasu is nerfed Still the pace of things...master roshi dodging jirens punches like it was nothing...gohan being able to match up against a potara fusion with ss2 with a tone of berserk...the fact that the ending didnt have any sort of symbolism unlike the ToP ending in the anime...kale eleminating most universes with her rage...and specially 17 somehow being as strong as goku..automatically surpassing vegeta

Majin Silver fused Zamasu is definitely not nerfed in the manga, he is exactly how he should’ve been in the anime. Not a completely utterly broken power and some Susanoo and Halo shit . The way Toyotaro made Vegito Kurbstomp Zamasu was just right, it made sense . Oh and , while we are at it, can we take a second to appreciate how much better Fused Zamasu’s design is in the manga? Majin Silver yeah, I discussed that a lot and came to the conclusion the fight should’ve gone like this: Somewhere before the fight Vegeta uses that amazing “Gamma burst flash” on Black and almost kills him while Zamasu is worned out after the mafuba from Goku, the. Zamasu would pull a single Senzu Beam(since he stole them from goku in a previous chapter ) and they fuse and eat the senzu. From there on ,I’s trow the potara retcon to the trash bin and make it so Vegito actually kills zamasu with the final kamehameha, BUT the same thing that happened in the manga happens: zamasu starts multiplying and “becoming the world itself” or whatever and then even Vegito is forced to retreat . I fell like that would’ve been much better , or if you fell like the story was fine, they should’ve at least used the Metamorian/dance fusion. So there would be no need to touch on the Potara rules

I don't like him, but I respect his character. Vegeta on the other hand, is in my top 5. He's number four, with the three above being Android 21, Zamasu, and Bardock (DBMinus AND DBZ Special iterations). Vegeta is just about one of the best characters in the show, he caught my attention in the beginning, showing himself to be the only villain besides Cell who actually had Goku beaten and bloody, unable to move. He had me moved during his speech to Goku on Namek, he showed me his extra depth of character in the Cell Saga, and he had me in tears during his final moments as Majin Vegeta. Vegeta should be loved and appreciated by everyone who watches or reads Dragon Ball. Even if you hate him, at least respect his character for all of his moments and flaws.

Man this is such a great video, you captured perfectly what I've been thinking of for a long time. And this is also one of the reasons of Kai's failure. The point was to cut the unecessary filler episodes, and they failed to realise that the long waiting is not filler, it builds emotion and anticipation. The way those drawn out moments fit with the music as well made the whole story, and Kai's music was... soulless, in comparison. It's like cutting out paragraphs from a book to get to the plot already. Thank you for getting this.

they are filler but filler isnt a bad thing as a concept, they "fill in" the spots in the world the manga doesnt. its a careful balance when adapting a manga to anime while the manga is still being produced. you need interesting and thought provoking filler to fill out the show to pace it properly so the anime and the manga can co-exist. its a perilous symbiotic relationship. in fact, if the filler episodes are done well enough, they can become canon. Just take the jinchuuriki from Naruto. most werent even a footnote outside of Naruto and Gaara, but the filler created and fleshed out the remaining ones well enough the actual manga creator actually canonized them within the pages of the manga.

I agree with your overall argument here, but I disagree with your examples. There is a difference between building up and wasting time. I am not trying to take away your enjoyment out of those fillers, anime is a different than the manga format, and the story can benefit from fillers. With that said, I think most of DBZ fillers are pointless and and were made to stretch the anime life span and keep the distance from the original manga. Now, you are right, the story has to EARN the big moments, and the DBZ certanly has, as much as a fight has to have stakes and reaons, otherwise is just a bunching people punch each other for no reason. Great video man. If I am not mistaken, in the original manga the japonese waited months before Goku crossed Snake Way. That.. is waiting haha.

Nice video, though I have to argue some things here. Most of your examples are related to character arc and development, which I am sure not many were bothered about. The problem people had with waiting were episodes which had no value, did not serve to build character, nor contribute to the story. Episodes like Gohan's birthday, Goku chasing Bubbles an entire episode, and Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma being captured on their way to Namek were good because they expanded upon the world and the characters involved. How did Gohan get his name? What steps did Goku take that led King Kai to becoming impressed to consider training him as he did? Who is this great threat Bulma and crew were warned about? Now let's look at episodes like Goku and Piccolo learning how to drive Goku running in to General Tao. Funny in their own right, a nice fan service to bring back an old character, but did any of it contribute to the story? Did it impact Goku in any way? Did it even matter? Would anything change of the events if the episode didin't exist? Probably not. With Dragon Ball, I was all for the adventure, slice of life, and the fighting. With Dragonball Z I was in it for all 3 up until the Android Saga. From there I mostly leaned towards the slice of life and adventure, but with Gohan vs. Cell I was rooting for him all the way. After that, I lost interest in the Super Sayians and powerhouses and paid more respect to the development of Gohan and Videl in Highschool. GT was a hit and miss, but I certainly enjoyed the adventure of it. With Super, I'm just not too big a fan of the fighting anymore. If I am to be honest, IMO Vegeta being a family man is THE highlight of Super for me.

Most of the Fillers were extended fight scenes that most people think are epic. The other filler scenes were showing the characters train or show us what the characters were doing between time skips like what Gohan while he was trying to survive on his own. The Fake Namek arch was only 3 episodes I think not that long!

With that being said, I think the reason the audience waits so long is because the networks just want to make tons of episodes to get the most our of their ratings and merch sales. I consider you to be a film critic, because you understand the structure so well. I believe the show can be just as powerful, with lesser amounts of episodes. Filler is created for sales, and not so much the art form. If your argument is that Kai was too fast, I totally understand that and am willing to meet you in the middle. I spend my entire life waiting. TV shows, movies, games, anime. Waiting for the end of a work day or a weekend or vacation. Too much damn time waiting but...I never had an issue with the stuff between fights on dragon ball. I love it all as does my son, his favorite parts of anime would be the lighthearted moments.

I did not mind a lot of the original 'filler' arcs, though some times they were just that, filler (Everyone screaming for three episodes straight), but when sharing this series with my friends, even for Kia, it took us several years to get through it from the beginning of Dragon Ball to the end of Kai. I can not even imagine having tried to watch it from beginning to end if we were watching the original run and not bing watching five episodes at a time. It would have taken us FOREVER to complete the series. So while 'filler' can be good during a show's initial run, and give the audience more to the world and tide them over until the main story gets started again, it can be really tedious to rewatch.

I have never had a problem with waiting for a story to unfold, that is how a TV show is supposed to be. Hell, I nearly lost it when I finally got to see DBZA ep. 60 because of how team four star showed Gohan's relationship with his two dad's culminating in a very powerful moment. I haven't seen seen Dragon Ball not because of the breaks between the fights, but because it takes too long for the story to be told. If nothing happens in an episode, if I'm not engaged in what's happening, if the episode ends and no one or nothing has changed in some way; it's not a good wait. It's boring, "you're boring me."
