Totally Not Mark I liked the arc, but the ending came out of left field and was horseshit. But the worst part? The arc already ended! The mortals came together to beat Zamaszu, and Trunks chopped him in half. Great for themes, fun to watch and a perfect end.

“Don’t shoot he’s not black” is still the greatest line out any anime that I’ve ever heard.

I think he was still just as cool maybe even cooler as we saw goku's body change him and he became less like zamasu and more his own being becoming addicted to fighting and refusing immorality. The bad part is when they fused removing goku black from the arc entirely

BlackScape totally agree. He should have been his own individual character. Just a Goku from another timeline that Zamasu swayed to his cause. They also shouldn’t have to fused together. The arc jumped the shark for me at that point...

I think he did need something besides just being an Evil Goku. If he had the same personality as the hero but a little twisted, I wouldn't have been as interested personally. The fact that Zamasu was using any means he could think of to get his way, including the sacrifice of his own body to take over one he consider superior shows you from the start, he's not going to back down and will do everything he can to see his dreams realized.

@@Dhampir101980 How would Zamasu even persuade Goku to his cause when the cause itself is annihilating the thing he usually protects? I can agree that Goku is not a hero, he says so himself; and only because he was forced by circumstances to do so. But Goku himself does not want suffering, so why would he do something like doing genocide? It just doesn't work if it's Goku.

Should have been Gohan Black. Would have made the conflict between Trunks and the antagonist more alternatively tense. It also could have showed the potential of Gohan that so many were craving where he stands toe-to-toe with his Father and in some cases dominates.

@@iamteadle714 I can speak from personal experience that just because one knows what one must do that does not mean one can actually do it, mentally speaking.

The problem with Goku Black is that he wasn’t played straight. Goku Black was the best thing about the Goku Black arc, but the moment Zamasu came in with the most painfully Aizen nonsense I’ve ever beheld, everything began to fall apart. The sad thing is, however, it looked like it might’ve been redeemed for a bit; the longer Goku Black was in play, the more like Goku he was becoming, his desires, means and even manner of speech becoming alike that of Goku. I thought he was going to pull a fast one on Zamasu, shackling the immortal kai into being his God of Creation so he could become a God of Destruction, completing the antithesis parallel that Goku’s had ever since Kami first offered him: _he doesn’t want to be a god._ And since Zamasu’s immortal, the heroes would have to overcome the biggest benchmark of Super; legitimately overcoming a God of Destruction under their own power.

Damn, that sounds like a helluva good story path, and with how Goku's physiology was changing Zamasu's mindset and way of living, a sudden split between his and future Zamasu's actions would've been so much more of a better twist.

Honestly? I didn’t mind the whole “Future Trunks timeline gets erased” thing, I just think that the payoff for it was bad. What if, after his timeline was erased, F. Trunks stayed with the main gang? Maybe add him to the Tournament of Power, and have his motivation for fighting be restoring his timeline?

Another thing that would have worked in my opinion is that it ended with trunks killing fused zamasu. They then could have gotten a nice speech from vegeta about trunks needing to continue training from the moment that cell died and that he shouldn't make the same mistake this time, so he won't need to run back to the past. They then could have gone to new namek in the main timeline, gotten the balls there, summoned it in trunks' timeline (tho I dont know if that would work, it would at least be worth a shot) and restore the damage done. As a nice touch, you could have f. Bulma hug vegeta and just have the audience shed a tear as she says how much she misses him in her timeline. It would also remind vegeta how much he loves his family and that he is lucky that he has bulma, even tho he denies this often but deep down knows to be true.Goku would still be able to get f zeno by saying that there is a friend waiting for him, and that he would probably like that, because zeno is a 3 year old. You would not interfere with anything and everyone ends pretty much the same place it ended originally. I know this isnt exactly relevant anymore (or at all really) but yeah, thats my little rant about how the goku black arc could have ended more satisfyingly.

His charisma, personality and flamboyance are what defines his greatness. It’s so different from previous villains and it was executed so well until he fused. Goku Black just as a singular character was great.

Yeah but the difference is when the cards are down and the hero has the advantage frieza turns into a scared stubborn child. When goku black gets over powered he gets excited. Also goku black goes for the kill while frieza will play around with you for hours

I think the point is, if the character knows the weakness they have they can try to think of a way to over come it. Therefore defeating the whole purpose of there arc, which is supposed to have the character unaware of this problem, only to then realize that the lie he has been believing was simply false and believe a better truth.

@@joaodelgado6696 A perfect comparison for this would be Gohan in the Cell arc. If we go for your approach, then Gohan would already know of his weakness of being scared and not wanting to fight. The traditional approach would take place; he trains, becomes stronger, overcomes his weakness, achieves Ssj2 and then battles Cell. Essentially little to no character growth. Not bad story writing, but not very effective, is it? The second approach would be for him to be unaware of this weakness. This is what happens in the Cell arc. It's only during the final battle with Cell that Android 16 makes him fully aware of his weakness. And then...he changes. He embraces his weakness and discards the lie he believes in. He is now willing to fight Cell and change as a person. And in doing so, we get what is now one of the best reveals ever for a transformation; Ssj2. See the difference? The second approach helps the viewers to attach themselves more with the character and also gives the character more growth, making it more visible to the audience. It helps create buildup and tension for the story as well as compelling and interesting characters. A character arc can indeed have a character already aware of their weakness, but it reduces the stories overall effectiveness and doesn't help link up with the audience as much as when a character is unaware of their weakness.

@@joaodelgado6696 Not sure about that. I'm just thinking out loud here, but... imagine a story in which the character knows he has a weakness, but can't overcome it. Wouldn't it be pretty much the same? I think that on that case, we'd most likely just see a shift on what should be considered the character's weakness. Let's say, for example, we have a story of a boxer, who wants to be champion. He's very good, but he can't beat a guy who's faster than he is. They fought two times, and the guy defeated him easily. The MC knows he's slower than his opponent, so technically, he knows his weakness. At this point, unless the MC has some trouble figuring out the best way to be as fast as his opponent, the story is over. So... for the sake of having an interesting story, maybe the guy tries some different things to catch up with the faster guy, and fails a bunch of times. He tries losing weight, for example. Until at some point, he realizes he needs to workout his legs. He trains them very hard, and beats the faster guy. On this narrative, we could argue that the characters's legs were his real weakness, and the MC wasn't aware of it. If the MC knew his legs were his weakness all along, we wouldn't have a story. He'd just have trained his legs and won easily.

Really? I'd have to disagree, though I do agree the Tournament of Power was waaayyy too long. One of my main (of few) complaints about the Zamasu/Goku Black Arc was how much I felt it was dragged out. They went back and forth in time so many times and only one of those times did they use the time to train, every other time was; go back, heal, strategy meeting, return. Personally I think they could have used all of that almost "filler" time to flesh out future Trunks a bit more, rather than having what felt like whole episodes devoted to Mei fawning over Future Trunks, Kid Trunks fawning over Mei and Pilaf and Shu (not sure if I spelt that right) trying to be Mei's wingmen.

Having an assassin with positive outlook and normal happy daily life but can be cold and ruthless when needed in mission could be interesting. Killua in HxH is one example of this, growing up in a family of assassins with all the skill about killing, he's still a playful kid who knows well about the dark side of society and have no qualms against killing (he actually is a professional one)

Trunk's weakness is that he's mortal. Zamasu was, in many respects, the main character alongside Trunks. Both were fighting for their side, literally Gods vs. Mortals. It is apparent through Black's quick grasp of Rose, use of time rings, and Zamasu's immortality, that the Gods were simply better than mortals. Trunk's arc was that he couldn't become strong enough to beat them, he had to use the benefits of being a mortal to win. This culminated in the sword of hope, which was a mortal conceived spirit bomb...but they still lost in the end. Trunks proved mortals can stand on their own and defeat the Gods, but they weren't there yet. Cut to the ToP, and Zeno makes the test for mortals to prove they are worthy of both the power (through the tournament), and the virtue (through the wish), of divinity. They are now ready.

@@MaxNMotion I used to think so, but it's a trap. If Trunks entered, all he'd do is be another protagonist for the writers to worry about. All he could do is take episodes and victories from Gohan, or 17, or Vegeta. I mean, Trunks vs. Frost sounds fun and all, but there's little room for yet another major character. He needs a different outlet for his story.

his weakness is thinking he needs someone else to grant his desire, his need is to accept that he is able to do it himself. Vegeta practically says this straight out to him.

Black wasn't just a fantastic villain, he was the only one of 2 actual villains in all of super, other than Freiza. Beerus wasn't really a villain and the others were tournament opponents. This just makes Zamasu stand out even more

I will admit that even though I have mixed thoughts on Dragon Ball Super as a whole, the Goku Black Saga WAS the best part of the series, though even then it wasn't perfect (especially the ending which I will agree with everyone was a weird one). If anything, it's arguably the one arc of Super that's feels genuinely like Dragon Ball Z did, and while I do like the Tournament of Power arc that follows it (except for Jiren, I think Toppo should have been the antagonist), I just felt like Goku Black was the best arc, and it is what I'd say is the gold standard by which DBS arcs should follow, just as the Namek Saga was for DBZ.

@@hellNo116 I respectfully disagree. The pay off was that it got us very interested in Trunks. And it had already been established that Frieza couldn't beat a SSJ so I don't see how it fucks him over that he gets killed by one. Plus Goku's defeat of Frieza still held weight. He had already been considering sparing his life throughout the saga and the point was to DEFEAT Frieza since it had never been done before, KILLING him is another story.

I still need a Goku Black movie.... They can cut the useless shit, and since the arc is already finished they can avoid a lot of the filler and just keep is simple. Also... memes. But with a film budget. *SUBARASHII*

zamasu as a concept is not really the problem,quite the contrary actually,he has the potential to become really interessting. the problem is that they did not think the entire thing thrlugh at all. all he witnesses is a minor bit of violence and then he already plans to erase everyone. and goku black is literally just him in another body,him taking over gokus body did not change in the slightest(everything he knows and thinks is still the same,so what is the diffrence?). it just does not make for an engaging story in the end. not to mention that it kinda undermines the purpose of fused zamasu in the end. he literally just fuses with himself,so what is the point of fusing at all aside from a minor statup? and if he wants to fuse,why does he not just take a zamasu in the actual zamasubody from another timeline instead of running the risk of the fusion failing when fusing with goku black? ...which it does. they really should have done something like goku(assuming we want to keep goku black. we could also switch goku for someone else) being forced by zamasu to fuse with him and it was a permanent fusion wished with the dragonballs. the dominant part of the fusion was still goku,but zamasus motivation and intend corrupted him to the point of him turning 100% evil and losing part of his memories from both zamasu and the original goku. he then travels through time to achieve his goals and later allies with zamasu because they "for some reason" share similar motivations. also,i just noticed that what i wrote is basicly an altered version of what danny phantom did with its evil danny-arc. that show definitly did the concept about perfectly lol

Honestly, both lightsabers and the Ki Blade are on equal terms when it comes to efficiency. However, the Ki Blade is never established to have a specific maximum length while the lightsaber does. So it’s not really up to me to really decide.

Evil Goku is still a dumb idea. I guarantee that without Toriyama's outline, Goku Black wouldn't have been nearly as awesome as he was. Luckily, Toriyama is a master of subverting conventional thinking and doing the opposite of what the fans want just for the sake of it. So instead of every bad Dragon Ball fanfiction featuring an evil Goku ever playing out on my screen, I got one of the best villains in all of Dragon Ball making memes and taking lives.

I think credit also has to be given to how well Black/Zamasu is voiced for why he just worked so well, especially in the original Japanese. Nozawa knocked it out of the freaking park as Black, to the point i think he's probably her best performance in Dragon Ball. and I can't not hear Zamasu when I hear Miki in anything else anymore. but Sean and Marsters also did great for the dub.. even if it took some work from their original attempts in video game dubs to get it solid.

Personally, I think Trunks DID have a solid arc going for him. The lie he believed: I can't do this without the other Saiyans. (This opposed to the cell arc where I think he did actually need help, at least to get stronger and understand what it means to be a saiyan.) The evidence to prove otherwise: Unlocking his own form, and the fact that all the humans had been surviving against all odds, against a threat that should have annihilated them instantly. The culmination of this was when he used/invented(?) the spirit sword, and beat Zamasu Black with just the power from himself and his people. This would have been an excellent ending if the fight had been elongated and heightened in scale. They also could have placed emphasis on him realizing he not only didn't need the Saiyans, but also time travel to solve his problems. What ruined it was that the Zamasu Black fight wasn't the end. Zamasu became, like, the whole universe and in the end Trunks DID need help from Zeno to beat the threat. I think this undermined Trunks' character arc, because while he did still go home a confident leader, it wasn't with the same satisfaction that it could have been. Of course, it also would have been nice if they had teased the spirit sword earlier and made the beginning of it look less like a spirit bomb, so that would make a bit more narrative sense. But either way, if things had shifted slightly to the left, this Arc could probably have gone down as the very best in dragon ball history.

@@feedmeyoursoul29 personally I feel the Frieza arc was the ultimate arc and can't be outdone. Just for the realistic physics of the earth (Namek's earth, as in its geological features) being torn apart. For some reason Toriyama toned that stuff down after that arc.

Yeah i was hoping for an arc like the Cell Saga in terms of character growth, storytelling, and progression on all fronts not just basically repeated rematches that just blend in until the end with barely any consequences. Realistically if the time machine was destroyed in the first fight and Goku, Vegeta, Trunks and Mai would need to focus on them having to run away and train against a Goku Black who's always on their tail and can kill them at any time. Maybe Goku Black instead of growing due to taking damage as the battle goes on. *Would grow overtime as a genetic mutation as a God or Supreme kai in a saiyans body meaning, they would have to worry about destroying him fast and each battle they have will only make him even stronger from a similar boost.* They would need to be strategic about their fights, and need to end it as quickly as possible. This could worry Trunks and make him feel incompetent as because he is so weak hes letting Black grow stronger by the second. Trunks would so desperately want to get stronger but also find it pointless when they always may behind Black. Vegeta could help Trunks realize theres always a way to change things based around his previous experiences he will help Trunks grow and develop with Goku also helping out in someway and possibly teaching Trunks the spirit bomb. Using the time chamber to grow in that time. So when Trunks summons the spirit bomb it would make sense and when he goes inside it, it would create tension only for him to arrise out of it to everyones surprise defying expectations and making a change to a move they thought could only be used in one way. Just like how Vegeta taught him theres always a way to make a change.. Trunks would create the Spirit Sword.

With the scene in the original being used, heck maybe like in the original Goku and Vegeta would also fight Black who would be alone and ultimately lose with their God forms and maybe they could even ascend to SSJBKKX20 and SSJBEVO like in TOP and still lose similar to the Cell Saga as it creates tension for Trunks as the one who needs to stand up to defeat Black, but Black would take the place of both villains possibly ascending to a new form to grow stronger instead of fusing since he would be alone. Regardless that scene with Trunks would actually mean something with this context and I believe this would with similar writing to Z with similar ways of writing a good story could of been an arc on par with Z in terms of character growth.

I wish we got more super sayain pink. SSJB vs SSJP was pretty dope.

The ending should have been a mix of the manga and anime. After Vegetto defuses, have all 3 of the saiyans fight off fused Zamasu to stall for time. He defuses and goku uses the Mafuba again to seal him in the jar, but this time grabs the coupon he took from Roshi and writes a seal to the best of his memory with his blood. And this time it works. This leaves Vegeta and Trunks to finish off Black. Trunks gets to kill Black with a combination of his sword and a father-son Galick Gun to wipe him out into nothing but ash. Then when they celebrate, Zamasu busts out of the jar because of Goku's bad handwriting and the hastily scrawled seal. He attacks Goku who drops the Zeno button and gets the idea: "we can't kill an immortal...but maybe he can" and they call him. Concludes as it was with the timeline erased. Though personally I'd also rather they accept that Trunks's future is gone. Literally say "Trunks, you had the worst timeline. You did so much for us in our timeline than you can imagine. Your family is here. Stay with us." and Future Trunks becomes a permanent cast member, a man out of time. Goku gets future Zeno, TOP setup. Trunks does have a desire and it's one of his less explored character flaws: he wants to save everyone, yet when he is often pointed out to be the cause of worse issues for it. He has a guilt complex that only gets worse because when he does something good, something worse seems to come out of it. He goes back in time and tries to save the others from the androids, and in turn 17 and 18 are stronger AND because of his actions Cell goes to the past resulting in hundreds of thousands of people dying. Not as many as his timeline, but still puts earth at a bigger long-term threat. He kills Babidi and Dabura before Buu awakens, but while he saved the universe from Buu this also caused Shin and Beerus to die. Black and Zamasu hammer into Trunks that he's a sinful mortal who caused all of this to happen because of his time travel and his desire for a peaceful future. They play into his insecurity that he is in the end the cause of all of his own problems despite his intentions being genuinely good. After all, they're what the road to hell is paved with.

If it makes you feel any better, Trunks technically did kill Goku Black. It was only Zamasu which could become the infinite version in the anime as shown with the faces, and he did this by going through a portal like what Black could make with his scythe (again, all visual so not concrete, but I think it's a safe bet). While the falling action is still different from your version, the climax basically goes the same with Zeno only destroying immortal Zamasu but our heroes killing Black.

The problem with future Trunks staying in the past is that he would make a time ring factory. This would cause big problems for the universe and maybe forcing zeno to erase U7 entirely.

Goku Black fell into the category of making a villain way to powerful to the point you back yourself into corner with no means of effectively beating them. Examples: Buu,Aizen,Madara, etc

@@SkyeKingTv No dude, those two timelines are fixated now. You can only create one new timeline by going to the same timeline. Confusing as hell I know. Point is, the "future" and "present" we see in Android saga and Zamasu saga are now just alternate realities. He could surely create even more alernative timelines but he knows there's no point to. He just teleports to the one he's acustomed with. And thanks to Whis, now there are two blue hair Trunks in the same timeline he restored.

I think Goku Black is my favorite villain in the entire series. I especially liked him in the manga where he was treated as an underdog until he unlocked SSJ rose.

11:49 - Fused Zamasu with starfish regeneration was scarier than the Zamasu sky wallpaper that the anime did.

Your videos are so awesome, not only do I learn so much about storytelling and writing, I can learn it and listen to it on a topic I think is hella dope. It just makes it so much more interesting to learn about.

I love how he used the Anatomy of Story as a reference for why the ending of the arc didn’t work that well. It’s a very intelligent way to break down what went wrong and how the story could’ve improved. I now need that book so I can read it and look in-depth as to why I didn’t like certain stories out there.

SwagKage did a perfect job of explaining why this arc (and all of Super honestly) was just horrible from a writing standpoint. There's 0 point to it and the characters don't gain or lose anything in the process (except for our boi Future Trunks) Only thing I disagree with him on is that Goku Black is stupid. - Gokus character was by far at it's worst in this arc. He is borderline unbearable - there was no need to bring back future trunks when he story had already come to a satisfying conclusion. especially when he gained and learned nothing - The constant back and forth time travel killed the tension - THE ENTIRE ENDING

Honestly im tired of evil main characters. Dbz and super has done it way too many times. It started with ginyu zombie plagued with dark water mist arc. Cell was a dark reflection of all the characters and after this it got stale. Buu started absorbing people baby vegeta and then that purple vegeta now evil goku. My hate of goku black runs deep. Hes another villain that uses the heroes body as nothing more then a power battery. If you used the super dragonballs to strip him of gokus body he has nothing after it the only reason this arc ends as it does is because goku and vegeta after figuring it out decides not to pull that monkey suite off. I hate that. Baby at least advanced his body after pulling off vegeta though he was still weaker than goku. But we never got a villain that simply wrecked the body of the hero they take over. And be more powerful then when they left out. Like if baby pulled all of the meta machines from the people he infected and gained power from that to combat ss4 goku id have thought that better. But goku black just had random powers that if he had access to as a supreme kai he wouldnt need goku body. Like opening dimensional rifts. In the manga its kinda worse he used zenkai to gain god powers. How?

Kinda expected a bit more on why Black worked. You just kinda called him neat and went on about why the Future Trunks arc of Super was a bit wobbly.

Vegeta is in a unique position where his story is over, yet there are still problems in the world he has to deal with. Actually, this helps explain why the Goku Black Arc is the way it is. Many of our heroes have already grown as much as they ever will be (I mean raw character growth, not retreads, power increases, or minute details added on to the character), but that's why Super is the perfect place to have an arc that is about the villain (Goku Black) and not the heroes, because the villain can still grow. Same kind of stuff happens in the Broly movie actually.

@@maxalaintwo3578 They've done that with the Universe 6 saiyans in general, and I think we're not done with them yet. Another character to grow is Beerus. Though very gradual, we've seen him go from villain to "uncle" Beerus by the time of the Broly movie, and again I think there's going to be a nice pay off. So far Super has been defined by how it changes based on what the fans desire out of the series. Each arc was made by what fans called for (though not word for word obviously, just in general). So with fans wanting Broly to be a major protagonist in the future, Beerus being more prevalent in a story, and Universe 6 saiyans showing their race in a better light, all 3 may very well happen.

Not to make a joke, but I thoroughly believe you did Zamasu justice with this video. Your points were very clear, and understandable, and your use of references to other scenarios in fiction and working your way up the ladder by using the points made by those books did well to get your point across when describing Zamasu/Black. It seems more often than not that Zamasu is pushed aside by fans as simply crazy or a mindless killer, with few understanding the depths of his goals. As a fan of Zamasu, I thank you for expressing what few can.

I really do adore these videos, but I also think that it's fair to deviate from the norms of a formula every now and then (not that the black arc always did so well though lol)

Âlpha Ferocity i think the drawing is meant to be more similar to late DB/early DBZ style as opposed to the current style

I kinda hate when people say Goku Black is the antagonist of the arc because Zamasu is my favourite Super character and he's actually Black too. Goku Black is the name Trunks gave to him before knowing who he was. I love Black and Rose's design, but I think people sleep on the fact that the entire arc revolves around Zamau's development and character and not just the cool looking badass evil Goku.

I don't remember Zamasu ever really developing, though. He starts and ends with the same cliche "I'll kill everyone to stop everyone from killing each other" mentality.

@@junamboqcg2369 Holy shit then you must have not seen any episode whatsoever. You haven't even seen this video, cause Mark states that Zamasu is a clear example of a negative character arc.

@@Cesonico Yes, I saw that part, too, but Mark never establishes HOW Zamasu has a negative character arc. He only gives Anakin as a good example of what a negatice character arc is. The first time Zamasu ever sees a sentient race begin in-fighting, his first instinct is to slaughter the whole species. This attitude never changes throughout the saga, even after he is scolded by Gomasu. He is never confronted by this lie, and that's why I don't think he really has an arc.

Goku Black should't have been actually Zamasu . I would have liked it more If he was a Goku from a timeline Trunks created accidentally in DBZ during android saga . And the Goku of that timeline to have become evil for some reason . It would still be Goku , which would have made the character even more popular and it would have added a moral to the story , that the mistakes of the past will haunt you in the future . But of course , this is just my opinion . What do You think ?

I don't know... The "alternate evil character" is quite overused. I mean, Goku Black is the same, but he's not just a bad Goku, he is a kaioshin in Goku's body.

Trunks weakness shouldve been complacency, its why his timeline is always fucked because unlike goku who always assumes there is another greater threat over the horizon and constantly struggles to rise to the occasion trunks cannot see past the current threat and only wishes to overcome this one threat so his struggle can finally end. Goku on the other hand submits himself to constant never ending struggle in his quest to get as strong as possible. Goku even makes fights harder than they need to be and insists on facing his opponents at thier full power where as trunks always ends the fight as quickly as possible which is one of his greatest strengths but also a weakness, when trunks ends a fight prematurely like he did when he prevented majin buu from being released sure he expunged the threat as effectively as possible and didnt allow it to escalate out of control but at the same time he gained nothing from it, goku and the others had to push themselves to the limits against majin buu and came out stronger and better prepared to face the next threat. Vegeta should have pointed out his sons weakness and refused to help him and leaving trunks to overcome his weakness alone.

The most disappointing aspect was that he turned out to be Zamasu who had stolen Goku's body. If he was a different entity instead of a 2nd Zamasu in this arc then it might've grabbed by attention.

I feel like Trunk’s weakness was his PTSD He didn’t really notice that he had PTSD The story should’ve ended with him overcoming his PTSD over Gohan and could’ve lived better I feel like that would’ve made the ends more satisfying.

so.... you could argue that it was also present in the android saga.

The weakness Trunks displays at the start is his dependence on Vegeta and Goku to defeat Goku Black. Vegeta lets him know that after their sparring match, and even though Trunks SAYS yes I will get strong enough to beat the villain, he doesn't really BELIEVE it until the Raged Trunks transformation, as he hadn't exactly shown this power prior to the transformation and his body splitting ending of fused Zamasu. Am I missing something or was this detail not apparent to you, Totally Not Mark?
