The Importance of Stage Banter

Ойын-сауық

What makes a great show is a combination of things. The art of stage banter isn't one to be underestimated.
*Re-uploaded to fix a mistake on my part. I said "Gary Souzza" instead of the correct "Steve Souzza."

When I saw Cannibal Corpse at summer slaughter a few years ago, someone threw a beer can on up on stage, so the first few minutes of the show was Corpsegrinder ranting about killing the guy who threw it and his family. Good times.

Oh man, whatever you do, DON'T throw shit at George!! The second time I saw them, some asshole accidentally threw a boot at him (for whatever reason it came off in the mosh and people were tossing it around to each other) and right in the middle of "Stripped, Raped and Strangled," he said "GRR GRR GRRR- i swear ima kill one of you sonsabitches tonight- GRR GRRR GRRRRR." Then he was trying to hand some kid a water bottle, and some guy next to him was trying to grab it, and he said "I WILL KNOCK YOUR HEAD OFF YOU SOULLESS MOTHERFUCKER!!" haha

He's great at improvising too. When I saw them he said "this is our last song tonight" and someone shouted "I'm going to write an angry letter!" Corpsegrinder replied "An angry letter? To who? Send it to Barnes, maybe he'll care."

At that same concert people were shouting out the songs they wanted them to play and he was like "You keep shouting these song titles, but I'm looking at our setlist and I don't see any of them on here." *BOOOO* "Okay, maybe there's a few of them on here. What would you have us do? Play every single song from every single album?" *Crowd cheers* "Yeah, I think not."

You are so right, sometimes I see bands who just walk onto the stage, play their setlist and go away, not even a greeting nod to the audience. I mean, I could as well just have stayed home and listened to your albums and get the same experience, do you really think you are so great you can just act like there is nobody else in the club?

Single greatest DM frontman of all time was David Vincent between 1989-1996. He had a captivating aura that was solemn, sincere and more than a little scary. He didn't use the death growl in between songs to gargle unintelligible drek. Instead, he actually SPOKE to the audience. It came across so much more powerful. Sadly, he kind of became a parody of himself when he re-joined MA, but those classic early tours were something to behold.

This is the problem I have with Tool. I love their music, but godammit they have absolutely no stage presence. Iron Maiden is the best live band I've ever seen, the only day I had more fun at a show is at Metallica, which Metallica has a lot of fun on stage as well. I love Exodus' live show as well as, GWAR, Ghoul, Slayer, Ghost, and U2.

I heard their 10,000 Days tour was disappointing too. On the other hand I heard that the tour for Aenima was great because they had people swinging on ropes and stuff. So maybe they lost something they once had?

Saw them in 2018 at Rock On The Range. For both Perfect Circle and Tool, they had pretty cool visualizers and laser lights going on. That, and like 10-15k+ people with massive crowd surfing and beach balls thrown made it a unique experience. Absolutely no banter other than them announcing they were playing a new song.

The part that really busted me up was the photo of Neil Giraldo. I literally have never read, heard or tried in any way to get information about his personality, but I noticed years ago that every Pat Benatar show, the advertisement or information always gave Neil Geraldo top billing along with Pat, even though nobody I know would ever go to see Neil play if he wasn't married to her. I kinda already figured out that Neil is a legend in his own mind...

Although on that note, I will probably remember Epica's Cry For The Moon for the drum solo at the end in Retrospect and The Islander by Nightwish is always lead in with either Marco telling a funny story and/or the rest of the band just flat out leaving in the beginning. Plus in Vehicle of Spirit, they spoke to their Tampere audience entirely in Finnish, well I don't know about Floor Jansen, adding to the cultural and personal approach.
